I know you’re mainly a star wars blog but I wanted to know what you think of Nagini being a korean woman?? I don’t want to rain on her actor’s parade but the whole thing doesn’t look good imo

I fucking hate it. There are so many layers of fuckery here it’s hard to unpack, but just confining myself to the casting:

  • Nagini is a Sanskrit name and yet she is played by a Korean woman. Not that casting an Indian woman would have made this shitshow any more palatable, but the idea that Asian identities are largely interchangeable? The levels of racist ignorance wow.
  • Yet again, the face of “Asia” is the palest East Asians. We already have a problem with Asia, the largest continent in the world and a hugely diverse one, being thought of as mostly Northeast Asia, with other groups regularly erased. Nice way to make this explicit. Again, not that casting a Desi woman would have made it better because this whole idea is so fucked from the start, but it is an extra shit cherry on top.
  • The exotic Asian slave woman who in this case is literally dehumanized, just gahhhhh no.
  • I don’t blame Claudia Kim for taking the role, actors of color often have to make the choice between shitty jobs and no jobs at all. This may well have been one of her better offers for all we know. I do blame Rowling for masterminding this total shitshow.

yikesss 😬 it was probably racist from the start then considering it’s origin bc “nagini” is Indian and refers to women who can shape shift into snakes (there was a popular Indian movie from the 90s with the title) and naga/nagin in general means female snakes BUT I just thought she named it that bc the snake was a female and she wasn’t creative enough to pick something else I didn’t know she was about to go Deluxe Racism.

and then 10 years later to have an east asian play her in the live action is SO funny to me like NOT that I Want this Garbage but even with all her Years of practice she can’t even do racism right lmfao

Padmé and Leia are completely opposite characters. Padmé spend her life fighting for “peace”, but it was the false kind of peace that is the absence of conflict which, thrives on the oppression and subjugation of others. Leia spend her life fighting for justice and even went against the rest of the Rebellion leaders such as Mon to achieve it. Padmé wanted the sort of peace that benefited only her and hers, Leia the kind that benefited all.

yeah! too many people forget that breha was leia’s mother too, and breha was a true humanitarian. she was allowing immigrants into alderaan during the clone wars. breha’s activism, unlike padme’s, wasn’t based on privilege or elitism. breha actually cared about people of all backgrounds and was using her planet to help those who were poor and homeless–well into the imperial era.

I can’t decide what single aspect I hate most about TLJ but if they’d killed Finn that would have been it. Heck, if TLJ had been perfect except for killing Finn, I would have hated TLJ just as much as I do now for that alone, just because people would love that he died.

If they’d killed Finn the ST would have been over for me, I’d be out. Fortunately I knew that was never on the table because KK mentioned post-IX futures for Finn, Rey, and I think Poe, but I still dreaded/dread what else might happen to Finn. TLJ was close to being the worst case scenario tbh.

I could see JJ modeling the conflict in IX after how WWII really ran. Which would be a bunch of “national” resistance groups opposing the “Nazis” (FO) and then somewhere along the way one or two smaller armies (UK and Soviet) joining to assist from the outside. The US didn’t arrive in Europe until near the end when everyone else had done most of the job and never aided much anyway, so you can write them out and change nothing.

I’d love to see individual worlds taking a greater role in the fight against the FO, a vindication of the better parts of the Separatist cause from the prequels era. It would also be a giant fuck you to the Republic’s repressiveness and failures, not to mention–obliquely–the U.S.’s savior complex about WWII. This speculation also seems to be partially supported by the leaked set pictures of Finn and Poe making allies in a more out-of-the-way planet. Lando can be the UK and, idk, rebellious Stormtroopers can be the Soviet Union.

sometimes the gap between white fans and fans of color is so glaringly obvious. tlj only looked promising until swc where finn get screwed over and rose was no where in sight, we didn’t even have a name for her yet. after that it was clear that the characters of color would be sidelined and mistreated though none of realized how bad it was. i remember how exhausting it was to deal with white fans who kept saying it might be a good movie and constantly shut down fans of color’s worries

Somehow we needed to have faith where there was no indication that faith was at all deserved. I mean a part of me wanted to believe they were right and there was no way it could be that bad. It turned out to be worse.
