When TFA came out my dad wasn’t impressed with the attractiveness of the cast. He thought Daisy was “alright” but John was “funny looking” (I guess Finn does make some weird faces sometimes?) and Kylo Ren looked like a zitty teenager with a big potato nose (had to agree with him there.) But hilariously, he said the best-looking person in the movie was probably Harrison Ford.

Yeah John is an actor with awesome comic chops and I think a lot of people used that as an excuse to pass him off as comic relief. He has plenty of serious scenes, though, where his heartthrob handsomeness comes into full relief. I know intellectually Daisy is a beautiful young woman but on a personal level she fills me with meh. Adam… omg šŸ˜‚ I don’t think he’s a conventionally handsome guy, but I can see something endearingly coltish and and awkward in him. I wonder if that’s one reason people perceive his character as much younger? Harrison did look good lol.

reyl0s saying that they like John Boyega but think Finn is boring is basically “I’m not racist BUT”

Their loss. There was a period of some months after TFA when I thought Finn was a one-dimensional and incoherent character; it’s why I took a little while to get into the fandom. Then I slowly got past my racism and my culturally Christian biases and realized, my God, this is a character I relate to SO MUCH. The movie and the character hadn’t changed, I just wasn’t seeing the depth in his writing and character.

I just saw a post pointing out a startling number of similarities between TLJ and Spaceballs and… honestly… it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if RJ had only ever seen that and thought that it was what star wars was, or knew and thought “oh I’ll be subversive by, instead of doing what’s sensible, I’ll rehash the plot of Spaceballs and turn that parody into Actual Canon”

I saw a post with some parallel stills (I think I queued it), are there more?? Man, I’ve really got to see Spaceballs, it seems far and away better than TLJ.

I don’t remember ever meeting a male Reylo, unless it was one who just thought Rey and Kylo were going to get together because Finnrey has no basis in canon and Reylo was telegraphed (that’s exactly backwards.) …Imagining a man who actually SHIPS Reylo, is INVESTED in Reylo, is terrifying to me.

I have heard stories of male reylows and seen comments that appear to be by male reylows, and none of it is good. There’s the story of going on a blind date with a guy who shipped reylow because he said it made more sense. He also believed, mystifyingly, that Finn and Rey couldn’t have children–or at least the right kind of children, I imagine (link). I’ve also seen comments by what appear to be anti-Finnrey and anti-Finn racist dudes appear below Finnrey fan videos, at least one of them pro Reylow (link, see comments by user Mike Scanlan. Racism and antisemitism at link). So yeah, all reylows can stay far away from me but male reylows in particular need to get several galaxies away.

Idk. I think looking at it objectively, Fry is right. Society in general worships youth, whiteness and heterosexuality. Rey and Kylo are two young, conventionally attractive white people who are not related and are shown having intimate experiences with each other. Romance is the closest analogy that exists for that. If they were both men or both women, of course the situation would be given more depth, but they’re not. They’re two white people who are hot.

If he’d put it that way I wouldn’t have been mad. Reylows would have been, of course, starting with his own host. He left out that bias, though, and the fact that Rey and Kylo weren’t just having an intimate experience–they were having it because they were being forced to and he was milking the hell out of it.

my brother thinks it would have been hilarious in the middle of the clone wars if they’d just straight up killed anakin off and kept going. the fans would be confused and be like ā€œi guess this show is an au?ā€ but lucasfilm would be like ā€œno it’s canon this takes place before revenge of the sithā€ and refused to explain how that worked and there would be absolutely no continuity the clone wars would just be a frickin train wreck and it’d just steamroll right through without any clues as to how it lined up with rots or the original trilogy but somehow being 100% canon anyway while the fans went nuts

and now i think i know why he likes the last jedi

nah, no desire to fight. i just thing there’s no such thing as objective beauty, but to each their own.

Yes there are standards of beauty within a given society and culture. Standards of symmetry, the placement of features and all that. They’re heavily Eurocentric and often racist and colorist as hell, but they do exist. I just find it interesting that when actors of color who do meet these standards of beauty come on the scene, suddenly these standards of beauty don’t exist and, guess what, it’s always the white actors who are still the most celebrated even when they objectively fall short. Like I don’t give a damn who finds who hot, I’m just pointing out the game is rigged because even the vanishingly few POCs who have won a genetic lottery are not considered good enough. The goalposts will keep shifting in favor of whiteness and the standards were bullshit in the first place.
