Lbr here, you’re the perfect example of HOW TO ACT on tumblr when you’re a fandom old

Awww thank you nonny. (You can see my age here too, “nonny” is livejournal-ese and all the kids say anon. When I’m feeling really old you’ll catch me saying “nonny mouse.”)

I think a lot of problems with fandom olds can be traced to the fact that we came up in fandom at a time when there was much less awareness about diversity and representation in media, still less about racism and other bigotry in fandom. Fandom racism was not as visible, at least to me, given that my fandoms had almost exclusively white major characters–which itself was a problem, of course.

But there were reams and reams of mpreg fic where it was suggested the adamantly cis male characters gave birth through the anus. I think A/B/O fics may have replaced this genre now? Also, it was an accepted “explanation” that slash was a form of safe sexual exploration for heterosexual women, to the extent that I was actually confused when I learned that lesbians wrote and consumed it, too. It did not occur to me that the fetishization of gay sexuality by straight women and the rampant use of regressive tropes was a problem, I liked canonshipping and femslash better anyway (which was also confusing because I thought at the time I was straight lmao).

So fandom was always messed up, the only difference was that the fans affected are a lot more vocal and visible now. Some older fans are bothered not by the racism, transphobia, homophobia and other bigotries, but by the fact that minority fans have a voice. It was a transition for me, too, as I discussed in my post Carrying the Fandom Load, so I can understand their bewilderment and even indignation. But just because it’s not something I’m used to doesn’t mean it’s wrong, you know? I think that’s a distinction people need to make. There were no good old days of fandom, just times when we could exclude people without getting pushback. I’m amazed at this new generation of fans who are so passionate about making fandom inclusive, and grateful for these changes.

And then there are some older fans that are just plain bullies, pretending they have some kind of wisdom others don’t because they’re older, using their age and experience to prey on younger fans, exploiting vulnerable fans while calling themselves “fandom moms (yaigh),” some running straight-up cults. To be fair these olds were probably just as bad when they were younger, they just didn’t grow out of it and found age was just another convenient weapon.

So yeah, I’ve seen some stuff and a lot of examples of what not to be. I’m very happy that I seem to have succeeded in not being That Fan, at least in some people’s eyes, but it’s an ongoing process.

Re//y//o’s are now comparing Rey and Kilo rim to HTTYD3 with toothless and the female fury. As if their are parallels between them.😒

Did I miss a part where Toothless kidnapped the female fury, tortured her, murdered her father figure, tried to kill her friends and tore down her sense of self-worth? If anything, the parts where the dragons circled each other and he was giving that cute mating dance reminded me of Finn and Rey’s mutual geekout and attempts at flirting. BECAUSE THEY WERE PURPOSEFULLY GIVEN A VERY TRADITIONAL AND RECOGNIZABLE MEET-CUTE MUCH LIKE TOOTHLESS AND HIS LADY FRIEND.

Your blog is great! I saw you reblog a gif of still star crossed. Have been looking for good shows with good representation for poc- would you recommend this one?

Aww thank you! I don’t necessarily go looking but do go with what’s got buzz on my dash and looks interesting, lol. I have been wanting to see SSC and even tried to purchase it on multiple platforms to no avail due to regional restrictions, so I guess the next step is piracy yarrr. I have heard no complaints and only good things about the representation aspect, though, so I won’t hesitate to recommend it. I’m just sad that it was cancelled after only one season. 😦

Do you think there’s still time to make Finn and Rey an iconic love story? I’m just scared that tlj squandered the opportunity and there won’t be enough time to make it really huge in ep 9. They don’t even have a love theme yet

I realize this is just the particular headspace I’m in at the moment, but this comes across as such a strange question. For context, I spent the past few days making parallel edits of Rey crying over Finn and Juliet crying over Romeo’s body in the 1996 Baz Luhrmann movie. You cannot work frame-by-frame as I did with Rey weeping on Finn’s chest like her heart is shattering, and doubt that they already have an iconic love story.

In my opinion, if they do decide to make Finnrey official there is more than enough buildup to make it big. If anything TLJ was an interruption, but one that nevertheless strengthened their longing for each other rather than weakened their bond. I agree TLJ was a wasted opportunity in many ways, but JJ has more of a chance to give them a huge love story if that is what he chooses to do.

on the whole d*mer*y thing I wanna say that both d*mer*y and r*ylo push Finn out and have rey (and Poe in the case of d*mer*y) focus on people they do not have significant positive relationships with. Like d*mer*y especially cuts the importance of Finn out of both Poe and Rey and hyperfocuses on two people who didn’t have 5 minutes of shared screen time in the films. It’s still operating under antiblackness. Poe and Rey have significant relationships with Finn and to cut him out is a disservice

Oh absolutely. Time and time again fandom has shipped the flimsiest, creepiest ships over a Black character with a white character. Honestly it’s their loss, though, because Finnrey is the most fucking awesome and empowering male-female ship to come along in years, maybe ever. I took a little time to come around to it myself because of my own implicit biases, but boy am I glad I faced my prejudices and was able to look past them because I love it. SO MUCH.
