Um? This is the woman who was confirmed, over and over again, to have put her ambitions ahead of the good of others, of Bajor, or indeed the universe. She also ummm tried to assassinate her opponent (Bareil)? Which would make anyone a villain? But that’s not close to all of it, you even brought up the pah wraiths yourself–i.e. her last arc in the show, where she was going to burn Bajor down and kill the Prophets because they liked Sisko better than her. I’m not sure what Berman meant by violation, certainly Dukat raped her by deception and no one deserves that. Here’s some news, though: suffering a wrong does not in itself make you a good person.

Do you genuinely think Finnrey will be endgame? I really want it to be and have since 2015 but that….. ending of TLJ made me think R*an intentionally made it so we’d think Finn is out of the picture and that’s where Poe comes in. Not saying Damerey necessarily but they’re definitely trying to say that Finn and Rey can’t happen with Rose in the picture.
I sure hope they’ll be endgame, but I’ll love their dynamic and ship them no matter what! If those other ships you mention happen and Finn and Rey remain platonic, the Finn/Rey friendship will still be the most central and interesting anyway. Finn and Rey were the beating heart of the sequel trilogy from the first, and while it would be nice for them to be a couple (a healthy romance, interracial relationship and so on), who they “end up” with romantically is largely peripheral.
This is in large part because neither of the romantic prospects you mention is particularly enticing to me, and would be more of a “Well that happened too, I guess” than anything I’m particularly interested in. Poe and Rey saying hi is supposed to be more romantic than Finn and Rey striving and pining for each other throughout two movies? Rose assaults Finn when they first meet and the novelization shows her having extremely creepy urges to hurt him even more for thinking about Rey, and I’m supposed to think that’s romantic?
I mean if that’s the way LF wants to push things for some reason (hint: racism) then that’s their prerogative, but to me Finn and Rey will be the better relationship, whether as a friendship, a romance, as comrades, as co-heroes, and any level that exists or has yet to be invented.
Have you ever seen the Legend of Korra? Your post reminded me why I was so pissed off about the second season and I was wondering if you’ve ever watched or addressed the bullshit good v. evil raava v. vaatu nonsense. Also, loling at that person who pulled a “I took theology once in college, i think i know more about asian religions (lol) than you, a Korean woman :)”
Yes I watched LoK, though I stopped for a while after Book 1 because I was so pissed at the whole Equalist plotline. In Book 2, the thing I hated the most was the way the show treated Eska’s abuse of Bolin as a joke. I wasn’t actively angry at the Raava vs. Vaatu thing since I didn’t understand them as a yin-yang relationship. I mean maybe that was the intention, in which case I’m retroactively annoyed, but the thought that Raava could be yang and Vaatu yin (or the other way around for that matter) is so ridiculous it didn’t even enter my mind at the time.
Even without the yin-yang angle it was still a load of nonsense, of course. Vaatu was right when he told Korra that fighting him would just make him stronger because he is the embodiment of disharmony or violence or whatever. If the show wanted to be thematically consistent Korra should have found some other way to defeat him. Instead the answer was to become HUMONGOUS and punch HARDER, basically out-Vaatu-ing Vaatu. What the fuck? I still had a grand time watching Korrazilla beat the shit out of Uncle UnaVaatu, though, having accepted that this was a B-movie kaiju flick that had not lived up to any of its philosophical or spiritual pretensions. Books 3 and 4 were better but man, that show took a while to find its legs.
I just “love” these students of East Asian cultures who think they’re experts over the locals. But what did I expect of a truscum, much like terfs they feel comfortable anointing themselves experts over other people’s lived experiences.
What’s your issue with Rebels?
REBELS SPOILERS, DISCUSSION OF GENOCIDE
Among other issues, I’m really not into the kind of story where a genocidaire’s oh-so-achy feelings are the focus while his victim doesn’t get to reckon with his own trauma but does get to bend over backward to help the perpetrator feel better and to accept and forgive him. If this is some hip new direction Star Wars is taking they can count me out.
i don’t blame you for not taking those trolls seriously because the shit they say is so off-the-wall and completely oblivious so it flies over most of our heads, without considering the negative connotations of it. then i remember that this horrible racism stems from how threatened they are by finn and they’re channeling their kylie ron by attacking finn stans who tell the truth. the sequel trilogy, bar finn, was ultimately a mistake.
It’s just so shitty that for every work that has great representation that fans, especially Black fans, can be happy about, there’s a corresponding price in heightened racist backlash. If it were just the fandom that would be one thing, but the way the franchise itself has been blatantly mishandling characters of color and genocide/war crimes motifs leads me to agree with you: Star Wars was a mistake (but thanks for all the Finn).
i really do appreciate everything you do for the fandom and the constant trolls you’re getting makes me frustrated. it’s very unsettling to see the anti-black trolls published and idk a way to handle them other than just ignoring them altogether. right now, the racist asks existing on your blog can maybe be tagged with “Lj handles racist trolls” like someone else suggested, but from this point forward, may i suggest just not giving them a platform? that’s what i see best fit atm.
I agree! They could be archived to display fandom racism (and maybe laughed at because holy shit), but otherwise they shouldn’t be given a platform in a way they control, especially unfiltered. I apologize for my thoughtlessness, it’s another part of my privilege in not having to think about racism on a day-to-day basis. I’ve been treating it like some kind of game when it’s not, it’s hatred.
Finnrey is good and beautiful and healthier than 99% of all relationships out there we love a mutually affectionate friendship/romance based on trust and teamwork
Remember when anti Finnrey assholes were saying Finnrey is dead because they were nominated for one of the most iconic Star Wars friendships of all time? What I found kind of heartbreaking was that some of the anti Finnreys were actually confused that Finnreys were so happy. Some were asking in honest confusion how Finnrey shippers thought friendship and romantic relationships could coexist.
And you know what, ship wars aside, I just wanted to give them a hug. I mean, who told them these damaging myths about romance? That your romantic partner should not be someone you like and trust, someone you love to spend time with?
It’s the same thing with those jeerings about Finn being “friendzoned.” I shouldn’t even have to say this, but the friendzone does not exist. It is a sexist construct that says women are worth it only for their bodies and not as full people. If there is a friend zone, it is absolutely the zone where the best romantic and sexual relationships could come from because it is also the zone of people you trust and respect.
So yes, Finnrey is awesome because it is based on friendship, and while a lot of the backlash against it is racist in nature there’s also a lot of sexism in there too. The idea is that a man and a woman in a romantic relationship cannot relate as friends on equal footing, based on mutual love or respect. Rather some sort of interpersonal violence must exist in order for it to be “sexy” and “intriguing.” Finnrey gives the lie to that idea, and that contributes in part to its not being taken seriously, being called too “pure” and “wholesome” and “boy/girl next door” and “romcom” and “not epic enough.”
Also, John Boyega is a Finnrey shipper and that alone should tell you it is the ship for people of intellect, taste, and goodwill.
Honestly, Pennywise is more of a “protagonist” than FN-2187.
Look at this poor desperate creature uwu
Oh honey. It must be so, so difficult for you, keeping up all this ship-warring bullshit under the guise of “fighting racism”! My heart bleeds for you, it truly does.
Hmm, asking for basic courtesy or pointing out how Finnrey is treated in this fandom is a ship war under the guise of activism now? Keep talking, person who has nothing better to do than troll on anon. You amuse me.
Hey anon, fuck you.
Fuck forbid someone loves a fandom enough to want to see it without racism and stupidity. Fuck forbid someone wants to see the fandom they love filled with people who love it, too.
Fuck forbid anyone wanting their fandom to be bigot-free, right?
Fuck you, anon.
Sorry, @lj-writes but this shit pisses me the fuck off. You have every right to do what you’re doing. I LOVE what you do, especially for the Star Wars fandom. This anon is just… an asshole.
Again, I’m sorry, but… fuck this anon -_-.
Thank you so much ❤ what’s even funnier is, I didn’t even talk about racism or any other ship in the recent post that probably set anon off. All I did was ask that Finnrey posts not be derailed, and point out that this behavior is really tiring. Anon went from there to racism and ship wars all on their lonesome. You know what they say, he who smelt it…
T’Challa and Nakia is the first MCU canon couple I genuinely ship. Like i liked Tony Pepper fine but I wasnt exited about it like I am with this ship they like OTP material I almost never feel that way about canon ships its kinda surreal.
Yes! Same! I love all the BP ships (except the ones involving Shuri and some grown-ass man, wtf is wrong with people…) but T’Challa x Nakia is the best, healthiest canon ship in a long time along with Finnrey, fight me on this.
