Y’all noticed yet, this f’d up difference between r*ylos and the alt-right…? Like, even the alt-right can tell that: a) Kylo Ren is the bad guy thru & thru, which pisses them off cuz b) Kylo Ren is clearly representative of their neo-nazi lot, and adding insult to injury, c) Rey is representative of the real life independent women whom they hate… meanwhile, r*ylos see: a) Kylo as a “misunderstood good guy” and b) Rey as Kylo’s destined broodmare. R*ylos are creepier than the alt-right here.

Eh, I think they’re two different categories. I’ve seen alt-right trolls who hate r3ylo and those who ship it, and I’m sure shippers themselves have diverse political views. I know there are antis who fall to the right of the political spectrum, too.

You’ll get no argument from me that the ship is creepy as hell, but shipping seems a little more complex a phenomenon than consciously held political views. And I certainly wouldn’t make a blanket statement like shippers being creepier than the alt-right when the latter have such repugnant views and cause so much real-life damage.

If anything, r3ylo shows the powerful grip real-life biases have on the subconscious–things like white prioritization, white heteronormativity, the idea that mistreatment is romantic, that women are the keepers men’s morality, and that outright criminals deserve infinite chances if they are moderately attractive white men.

These ideas dig deep, shaping our preferences and comfort zones. Our best defense is to understand how these things work in ourselves and in fandom spaces, bringing some of the subconscious into consciousness so that we are a little more aware of how we consume and interact with media.

I thought TLJ was even worse than Twilight. At least Twilight is Bella-centric, the story revolving ultimately around the female protagonist. In TLJ, everything ultimately revolves around Kylo Ren the space neo-nazi, he’s been made the protagonist. Wtf even. Twilight has become a better story in general than The Last Jedi. And that is just FUCKED UP.

I haven’t read Twilight or seen the movies, but from what I hear it seems to be all about (straight) female wish fulfillment for all its problems, kinda like shoujo manga/soonjung manhwa. TLJ is the worst of both worlds, with the creep factor of Twilight and none of the empowerment.

And I don’t think the twilight guy was a neo-Nazi-like figure and heading a facist organisation, was he?

Not to my knowledge, so… Twilight is still ahead. 😱

Rose’s character has a lot of potential. Even though Kylo Johnson wrote her so lazily and offensively, she can still be redeemed and if in Episode IX her behavior is explained by “she was going through grief and not in her right mind” it would be believable. I just want Rose Tico to be the amazing character I know she can be

Oh yes, there’s a good character in that mess of incoherent writing. The Episode IX team would go a long way toward fixing the mistakes Johnson made with her character if they retcon out the bullshit morality lessons and make it clear some of her actions in TLJ were a) reactions to her trauma and b) deeply wrong.

I mean, I don’t think TLJ Rose needs to be necessarily out of character or to have been in an altered state. People can do terrible and destructive things out of grief and pain. The important thing is to make amends and process these emotions appropriately, not to say “That wasn’t me!”

One thing I am really hoping JJ doesn’t do is bring Phasma back. Again. But given that she somehow survived being put into a trash compacter on a planet that then exploded I wouldn’t be surprised if he did. We don’t technically see her die in TLJ either…

Yeah, I was excited about the potential of her character but I think that ship has sailed. It’s such a waste too, of a great actor and the character’s history with Finn. I hope JJ remembers Kylo Ren’s obsessive hatred of Finn that he himself set up in TFA and makes it pay off in Episode IX.

Only one good thing I got out of TLJ’s existence was, a week after watching it with my family, my 60-year-old conservative-minded white mother – who enjoyed TFA and Wonder Woman – came to me and said “I understand now, it’s not the strong women who are the problem, it’s the people behind the scenes who don’t know how to make good strong women that are the problem”. (Me: “the WHITE MEN behind the scenes, Ma.” My mother: “Oh I wouldn’t blame all white men –” Me: 🤷🏼‍♀ k we still got ways to go)

Your mom almost got it, lol. I mean, I don’t let men of color, or for that matter women, off the hook regarding their sins against female characters, but it’s undeniable that the media is very white male dominated. The fact that so many of them suck at writing female characters doesn’t mean female characters in themselves are the problem.

The moment Rose tased Finn, she was doomed to be unlikeable. All these racist assholes trying to explain away Rose’s actions are transparent as fuck with their racism. Of all ways to introduce Rose, it’s via her electrocuting Finn unconscious?! Fuck any “but you have to empathize with Rose here, think of what she lost” bullshit, Rose’s character was crafted in a way that was bound to make audiences instinctively feel antagonized by her no matter how much they later consciously try to like her.

Yeah I mean.. it was so unnecessary and over-the-top. if the tasing had been presented as the awful, unwarranted assault it was and she learned and grew from it, okay. Not perfect, but okay. But it’s not really addressed at all and the whole thing creeps me out.

I’m from asia and I think that how Rian Johnson wrote Rose is ridiculous. First scene, she behaves like a zealot. When Finn cooperates, is because he’s scared of her. Last minute, Rose suddenly changes. She kisses Finn but since when she loves him??? I do not hate Rose, but I think she does not make sense. My friends also think Rose is odd. They all make fun of Hollywood again, because Hollywood does not know how to show asian characters.

Oh, you’re far from the only one. I’m translating a comic review by a Korean guy who is both mystified and pissed at her character, and places the blame solely on Liondick, as he calls the guy. (”Rian” sounds similar to “lion” in Korean and “Johnson” is a common slang term for penis.) He went into the movie hearing that Rose is an irritating character, so it’s a very common sentiment. She’s like… some weird combination of ultra-violent dragon lady and commissar, and very little about her story makes sense. Both the character and the actor were vastly underserved by the movie.
