Eh, I think they’re two different categories. I’ve seen alt-right trolls who hate r3ylo and those who ship it, and I’m sure shippers themselves have diverse political views. I know there are antis who fall to the right of the political spectrum, too.
You’ll get no argument from me that the ship is creepy as hell, but shipping seems a little more complex a phenomenon than consciously held political views. And I certainly wouldn’t make a blanket statement like shippers being creepier than the alt-right when the latter have such repugnant views and cause so much real-life damage.
If anything, r3ylo shows the powerful grip real-life biases have on the subconscious–things like white prioritization, white heteronormativity, the idea that mistreatment is romantic, that women are the keepers men’s morality, and that outright criminals deserve infinite chances if they are moderately attractive white men.
These ideas dig deep, shaping our preferences and comfort zones. Our best defense is to understand how these things work in ourselves and in fandom spaces, bringing some of the subconscious into consciousness so that we are a little more aware of how we consume and interact with media.
