Casual SW fan here. Why was Rey Kenobi such a hated theory? I have no horse in this race so I’m just curious.

Leaving aside the fact that it was like catnip to a Certain Group of Fans That Shall Not Be Named, I disliked its lack of emotional resonance. Obi-Wan Kenobi died over 30 years ago in story time by this point in the franchise and, more importantly, he wasn’t important enough in TFA enough for him as Rey’s grandfather to be emotionally satisfying. Her parents would have to be whole new characters or characters from The Clone Wars unfamiliar to the general moviegoing audience, and introducing them would have taken screen time. Maybe @applepiewithextrafreedom could provide more insight, since their comment on hating Reynobi is what I reblogged.

@lj-writes  for your Anon.

it served no purpose to the story in any way shape or form. we love him but it makes no fucking sense and is actually detrimental to obi-wans character. this is a man who watched his adoptive brother get torn apart by the internal conflict between the dark side and the light and you mean to argue that shortly after watching someone who he loved fall the way he did he was going to risk getting attached to someone. did he not learn anything from watching anakin die?

look, it makes sense for luke because luke wasnt there. luke didnt see anakin when he was burning up on mustafar so to luke the most important thing was his friends and thats when he proved that attachments dont have to be a death sentence. but this was LUKE. up until anakin was redeemed by luke obi-wan didnt believe it was possible. that was why he was so afraid for luke when luke tells him hes going to abandon his training and go to bespin to save han and leia.  “i dont want to lose you to the emperor like i lost your father”. it doesnt make any sense if obi-wan is secretly hiding a wife and child somewhere. obi-wan is an old school jedi. hes very by the book kind of guy. its completely unlike him and i would hate to see obi-wan throw the book out the window. thats not who he is, he’s not like anakin, and thats why i like him.

back to the pointlessness of such a reveal. how does that affect rey?

answer: it doesnt. rey doesnt care that her parent is the child of some jedi who died 34 years ago. its not like obi-wan is anakin. obi-wan was a great jedi but he wasnt exceptionally powerful or anything like that. he was pretty average. what made obi-wan a good jedi were his values. he was very by the book and followed the rules but if he didnt feel comfortable doing something he felt was immoral he would speak up and he wielded his power responsibly. this is why he was a great jedi. not because he has raw power like anakin. anakin had raw power and he was the worst jedi. he single handedly destroyed the jedi order. so yeah it affects rey in NO way that obi-wan is her relative. its pure fan service and requires the movies to do too much leg work like introducing the actual parents as well as telling us who obi-wans wife was. saying hey she appeared in some TV show the general audience hasnt seen isnt going to work. when the audience walks into the movie theater they arent going to hand them a CLIFFNOTES guide to the expanded universe so you can understand who the fuck Satine was. the reason why reysky matters is because shes actually meeting luke (A SKYWALKER) and she was attacked by his nephew (A SKYWALKER) who worships his dead grandfather (A SKYWALKER) and she is now doing his sister’s bidding (A SKYWALKER). this family is taking over her life. why should some random girl work to fix this family’s issues? because shes not random. shes one of them. they are her family.

one of the more minor reasons i hated it was because a lot (not all) reylos completely latched onto this theory as an excuse to deny reysky because it would be incest for rey and kylo to be related. they completely ruined this theory for a lot of people.

Bad choice of words but im actually glad John said this. To me this confirms my suspicions that hes not going to be with rose and it leaves it to JJ to put finn with rey in ep IX. I always figured that was the point of separating rey and finn. They need to develop their stories beyond their romantic relationship so that the ST isnt just nine hours of finn and rey yelling each others names when something happens to the other.

as for kylo hes not a threat like Rose. Rey/lo is and has always been a crack ship.

“just nine hours of finn and rey yelling each others names when something happens to the other.”

You say that like it’s a bad thing…

Kidding aside, yes, finnrey shippers have been saying this the entire time, that they are going to have separate stories and developments in TLJ. Neither character is solely a love interest for the other, they each have their own arc and they’ll be intersecting in exciting ways. If done right the movie will build up so much anticipation and tension for their reunion.

Han solo cockblocked Finnrey. Im rereading this and i cant believe this is canon. I cant believe i missed this. Finn and rey were totally going to kiss and han “overprotective dad” solo purposefully cockblocked them. In the movie i though he was just being careless like C3PO cockblocking him and leia. Lol This is literally in one of the novelizations:

Finn tried to play it cool “we came back for you.”

Chewbacca ruffed, which told rey what she thought and hoped.

Finn glanced at the wookie.”what did he say?”

“That it was your idea” rey said.

Han stepped in before the reunion turned too emotional. “We’ll have a party later. Ill bring the cake. Right now lets get outta here”

They didn’t even get a hug in this version?! HAN YOU MONSTER.

Its crazy how rey/los can tout the novels as being evidence for rey/lo but completely refuse to acknowledge the fact that rey is explicitly falling in love with finn the entire time even KYLO sees it and knows those feelings are no joke. when hes invading her mind hes like damn shes got it bad for this traitor guy.

“You find him more than tolerable” he drew back slightly bemused “youve even begun to care for him. A weakness, such distractions”

I like how he points out “more than tolerable” but then says “you’ve even begun to care for him” meaning hes refering to two different things here. Her finding him ‘more than tolerable’ is different from “caring for him”.

Hes telling us two things. Rey finds finn attractive but also actually cares about him. Rey wants the D confirmed by kylo himself.

There it is

The passage they don’t want you to see.

literally kylo ren:

Are you telling me that even Kylo… SHIPS IT?!

@darthlenaplant im just imagining kylo in his room just confused but intrigued he cant get his mind off of it after fighting them both he becomes more and more invested. “He loves her… He must. Right? He cradled her in his arms. And She loves him… but does he know that? Oh god i put him in a coma! He’ll never know she loves him! What have i done?!” And thats how kylo gets redeemed.

It actually makes a mad sort of sense. I mean, Kylo wants to turn her to the Dark Side, right? He probably knows the story of how Anakin fell, fanboy that he is. If Rey’s crush develops into lurve, and if something should “happen” to Finn again, she’ll turn Dark and become Kylo’s apprentice for sure!

Kylo becomes consumed with this idea and enlists the First Order’s resources to get Finn and Rey together. Finn and Rey are increasingly alarmed when Stormtroopers do mass games to form the letters “Finn ❤️ Rey” and broadcast radio drama-like details of what each did as the other was unconscious. “Then Finn shouted, ‘Come get it!’ and bravely charged head-on at the strongest Force user in the galaxy, whose dark cloak swirled ominously and fashionably in the snow. If only the stupid scavenger had been awake to see how brave he was for love.”

applepiewithextrafreedom:

real talk though. lets pretend for a second that rey isn’t in love with Finn(she is) and its strictly platonic between the two (its not). i think we can all at least agree that rey and finn are best friends. rey/lo fundamentally misunderstands who rey is. for a girl who is obsessed with the idea of finding friends and having a family rey/los version of rey really disregards finn and the resistance feelings about the first order. she disregards the fact that her new boyfriend sliced her best friends back open putting him in a coma and was complicit in his enslavement. she disregards that the members of the resistance, have lost countless friends and loved ones at the hands of Kylo and the first order.and this is all if you pretend like rey has no self-respect and forgives kylo for torturing her and throwing her up against a tree. if you think rey is going to say “finn i understand that they enslaved you but i love kylo” you haven’t been paying attention to what is at the heart of rey’s character.

i cant imagine a scenario where finn would forgive kylo at all let alone forgive him enough for reylo to be a possible outcome. if rey intends to keep being friends with finn she will have to choose between the two and cannot fathom the idea that Disney, a family oriented company that centers all of its stories on friendship, will just gleefully breakup the key friendship at the heart of these movies?

This is why all the reylo hadcanons have Finn easily forgiving Kylo which is in itself yaigh.
