People always forget that Shmi started the Skywalker line. People always forget that Anakin carried Shmi in his heart until he died, that her death was the reason he turned to the dark side. People always forget that Leiaâs resilience and strength is also from Shmi, and that Lukeâs kindness and ever hopeful outlook on life is Shmiâs blood running through his veins. When people think of Leia and Luke, they never think of them as descendants of Shmi. The fandom never credits Shmi Skywalker as being a strong female character. No one ever makes comics or fics of Shmiâs ghost watching over the Skywalker twins.
The fandom just forgets about Shmi, forgets that she is the mother of the most powerful line in current canon. We forget that she is one of the most strongest female characters in the saga. To raise a son in slavery, to make sure he is healthy and care for, and to give him away so he could have a better life is strength. And to essentially be forgotten by the Republic,to be forgotten by the literal queen/Senator she gave aid and shelter to and who eventually marries her son-who had the resources to save her, and to receive no aid in return, yet still stay strong in the face of torture just to see her son one last time, takes strength.
We see her in Anakin, Luke and Leia yet, there is hardly ever mention. There is hardly ever recognition for her connection to them in the fandom. Well, guess itâs time to make my own Shmi content since the fans pretend she doesnât exist.
Like for real, the skywalker line was started by a slave woman who gave all she had to help her son, and her granddaughter became a senator and her grandson became the head of the new jedi order. That is big and none of that would have happened without Shmi.
I got an A+! đ Thank you for your kind words. This is why I think Finn and Reyâs is the best male-female fictional relationship in years, possibly ever, because they both have their respective arcs and hurdles they need to overcome. People who think they are boring and conflict-free arenât paying attention, or donât care about conflict other than mistreatment between the man and woman. The central conflict in Finn and Reyâs relationship is that they both struggle with intimacy due to their traumas, and both need to grow into the heroes the galaxy needs them to be. That is the kind of relationship conflict loving couples have, not things like torture and manipulation.

Michael Burnham
Im so grateful for Sonequa Martin Green for giving us Michael Burnham, Iâm just so happy for it. To be honest, i feel like when everyone learned that there was going to a black female lead on Star Trek, there wasnt a big reception for it, like there was for the new doctor on Doctor Who. Especially when that subject was trending for a couple days here on Tumblr. If yâall happy and grateful for Michael Burnham, reblog/like.
God, I am so grateful for Michael Burnham. I havenât loved a Trek character this much since Ben Sisko. Sheâs smart and strong, but that doesnât mean she has to sacrifice her humanity for those attributes.Â
I love her natural hair. I love the fact that she gets to have a love interest (and a very cute one to boot!)Â
I love her multiplicity. I love her interactions with the other members of the crew. I love that she grows as a character throughout the course of the season. I LOVE the fact that this show stars a Black woman and everything is filtered through the eyes of a Black woman. I love how sheâs caring but doesnât need to sacrifice her own ideas or values for others. I love that we get to see a Black woman be a science specialist, and actually look at and TALK about science. I love that her knowledge and skill set is valued. I love that Ash treats her with respect and warmth (and that she does the same for him.)Â
Michael Burnham is amazing and Iâm so grateful sheâs now a part of the Trek canon! Â
The one crisis that genuinely threatened my marriage early on was when I started marathoning Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and could not… fucking… stop. My poor husband would come home to me watching episodes late into the night and the wee hours of the morning, and we had to sit down to have a serious talk about how I was all but ignoring him for the show.
A few years later when we found out a mutual friend was a big DS9 fan who had watched the show three times, we told him laughingly about this incident. The friend told my husband he was in the wrong. “You should have been watching with her.”
We are now halfway into Season 7 on my second rewatch and my husbandâs first. We recently celebrated our fifth anniversary, we have a toddler together, and we couldnât be happier. The moral of this story is that the key to marital harmony is watching DS9 together.
(Before anyone jumps down my throat, the part about my husband being in the wrong is A JOKE. Of course I shouldnât have been watching the show so excessively, and I made adjustments after our talk–mostly by finishing the show during the daytime, lol, but still. Anyone who comes onto this post whining about man-hating will be mercilessly mocked. And just in case anyone really is that dense, my husband and I did not actually have serious issues and DS9 will not in fact solve your marital problems on its own. It should, though, itâs such a damned good show.)
