I’ve seen reylos draw Kylo with a “manbun” or talk about how hot Adam looks with one (he’s worn one on occasions usually for roles). So that’s manly and sexy, but John having his braids up in a style is “gay.” Do these people listen to themselves?
Does John look gay or is he a raging homophobe, or both? I can’t keep track anymore.
Moral responsibility doesn’t break the law of cause and effect. For instance, Anakin is responsible for his own atrocities, yes, but we can see that the development of the personality traits that led him to that point was induced by a combination of the Jedi Order’s rather awful style of guardianship and Palpatine’s manipulations. That one is wholly responsible for one’s choices does not change the fact everyone is a product of their environment (and genes) in some manner.
Yes, there is a traceable contribution that the Jedi Order made to Anakin’s fall, linked to the Jedi’s own flaws. We don’t have that for Leia and Kylo Ren–you’re simply speculating on that front. You even admit you don’t know how Leia contributed, but you’re sure she had a hand in it for the sole reason that she’s his mother.
I always headcanoad (is that a word?) that Leia did understood Anakin character and motivation and even feel sorry for his life previous Vader, but not really forgave him.
Yeah, I can see her sympathizing with him–she takes a lot after his temperament, after all. Of course there’s a lot of daylight between understanding him and forgiving him, as you point out.
I mean, it would also be illogical to say that Leia had no agency in Kylo’s upbringing or moral character, surely? I’m not assigning blame because I don’t know what, if anything, she might have done wrong, but unless Kylo was brainwashed in some way that had nothing to do with his personal development, her influence is part of him in some way. We just don’t know what or where.
Or maybe Kylo is responsible for his own damned fuckups as a grown-ass man? Just a thought.
Reylos said several times they thought Finn was 40 years old. But they like to call Kylo a “poor BOY”
Welcome to Reyloland, where a Black man in his twenties is middle-aged and a white man in his thirties is a teenager.
Praise Karp, the submit box works again! (rktho)
Yay!
How do you upload multiple photos to a submission? (rktho)
Maybe make it a photo post and add more than one pic?
But Kylo is part of Leia’s legacy. Not the good or desired part, obviously, and I’m not trying to assign blame, but Kylo wouldn’t exist if not for Leia. Though I am a bit irritated about her not forgiving Anakin, because she eventually did in Legends, and it doesn’t seem logical that ghost-Anakin would take no time at all to try to reconcile with her.
Legacy is more than simple cause and effect, though. Legacy implies some kind of choice, purpose, and agency, so if you call Kylo part of Leia’s legacy then you are assigning blame to her on some level. Don’t try to have it both ways by both calling him part of her legacy and saying you don’t blame her for Kylo, that’s disingenuous.
Also, maybe the new canon decided not to follow the Legends reconciliation because it’s telling a different story. Is there any real value in Leia forgiving the man who tortured her and was complicit in the murders of her parents and entire planet? Maybe there is value in showing Luke and Leia make different choices about forgiveness and both being valid. Not everyone has to forgive people who committed awful crimes, even if they’re related by blood.
The other reason reylows talk about Mara Jade is they think her and Luke’s relationship is like reylow. Which it isn’t at all. Luke and Mara became almost instant allies (albeit reluctantly at first) in the thrown trilogy, she never really tries to kill him and save his life a couple of times. They were then friends for 10 years before they got together romantically. Plus Mara has more in common with Finn than she does Kylo, both were taken as children, brainwashed and turned into weapons.
Reylows fail really badly at literary parallels of all sorts but they seem to have a particular hard-on for comparing Kylo Ren to much more sympathetic brainwashed child soldier characters like Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Ashi from Samurai Jack, and Mara Jade of course. They also love to ignore that Finn is a much better comparison to these characters, though he doesn’t have a redemption arc because he literally did nothing wrong uwu.
