that article about white guys who kill people is pretty disturbing. you don’t have to answer this if you don’t want, but I’m curious whether racially homogeneous countries (like south korea) also have a hierarchy of criminals who get more sympathy than others due to some factor (class, immigration status, etc.)?

From my observation crimes by immigrants, often Chinese-Koreans who make up a lot of our immigration population, are sensationalized and generalized way more than crimes by native Koreans. And among Koreans, men who commit violent and sexual crimes against women tend to get off lighter. Class seems to be a factor, too, because it always seems to be men working odd jobs, homeless men etc. who get splashed across the news. You hear news about a doctor killing his pregnant wife and stuff like that, but I haven’t seen them do perp walks on national television.

I’m sorry for the Finn thing. My self-racism detectors were working on the assumption of “don’t assume that black people are more resilient than they are,” and it didn’t occur to me to calibrate them in the other direction as well.

I think the way dehumanization works is often by extremes that disregard the complexity of a person–so both hypersexualization and desexualization can be used in racist ways, for instance. Seeing someone as hyper-resilient is othering, but so is seeing them as completely helpless and dependent. Maybe it’s because humanity so often lies in the muddled and messy in-betweens.

As someone who has seen all the series of DW since 2005, there are clearly issues with the tv show. Sure there’s a lot of tokenism and the 11th doctor is very centered in a hero figure that is (looking back on it) quite annoying and typical of Stephen Moffat’s writing. But they do break the expected on quite a few occasions. All hope is not lost to me ever since Bill Potts appeared last season. Sad thing: the black lesbian dies :/

Oh no, I was seeing some content about her on my dash and one day they stopped. Was that why? 😦 According to her wiki page she was fatally shot and then ultimately left to travel around the universe with her girlfriend, though I can see how that’s functional death.

I’d recommend 1-2-3-Solo-RO-4-5-6-7-8-9. As much as Solo has issues, it actually feels like a SW movie. Unlike tlj. It’s okay ppl don’t want to watch it but Solo was better than tlj, PM and ATC imo.

A lot of people who have seen both have said Solo >>>>> TLJ. Which is a low bar in my opinion, since TLJ wasn’t just bad–2/3 of the prequel and original movies are bad anyway–it was outright malicious and went miles out of its way to be racist in a franchise that is already impressively racist. This suggestion seems fine if you want to go in strict chronological order, though I would leave out 8 personally.

I know we talk about the re//ylow vs finnrey ships & how that shows fandom racism but have we talked about ky//lux vs hanlando? Ky//lux is a HUGE ship built on nothing more than 2 white guys who hate each other but hanlando has huge amounts of subtext & we’ve just had a movie with the younger versions of them & yet hardly ANYONE ships them?! If Lando was white, you just KNOW it would be a huge ship.

Han and Lando had more chemistry in two seconds than Kyle and Hugs had in two movies.

I knew this girl with the most amazing family. I fell hard for her because I totally wanted them to be my inlaws. But that bridge is burnt if it ever even existed, and now that I’m not in high school, all my peers from this point forward are going to live away from their parents and siblings, so I’m never going to be able to find someone else like that, even though people like that aren’t one of a kind. It’s the most frustrating thing.

Ah, the onet that got away. It’s a great feeling when you fall in love with your partner’s family–I quite like my inlaws myself. I think, though, that inlaws are deal breakers not deal makers. They might suck so badly that they make it impossible to be with the person unless they’re willing to cut the family off, but no matter how lovely the family are they can’t make a romance happen in themselves. The inlaws are not the ones you’re getting in bed with, literally and figuratively. If you find someone who’s right for you, consider inlaws who are anything above “tolerable” to be a bonus.

Doesn’t Rian Johnson have any loved ones or friends who can tell him to stop embarrassing himself? That he has to let go of the fact that people didn’t cream over his mess of a movie? Isn’t there someone who cares about this man who can tell him to stop humiliating himself by insisting the negative reviews of TLJ came from Russian trolls? When he first said this I thought he was joking. But now he is citing some sociologist and saying “See! I told you it was Russian trolls!”

Does RJ look like he has loved ones or friends with any amount of sense? That study obviously does not say what he says it does (link). From the author of the study himself:

“The suspected Russian trolls are so few that it is basically the
normal amount of Russian trolls you would expect to be present in a
high-profile online debate.“

But I for one hope RJ keeps embarrassing himself. It’s way better entertainment than TLJ.
