You know back in the day when Twilight existed and fangirls created this team call Team Edward and Team Jacob shit and twilight girls are debating who Bella should be with like with a white pedophile man who lived a century or a native protective man who cares ad support and they’re about the same age. But anyway it remind me kind of like how it is now, where we Team Reylow and Team Finnrey and Team Stormpilot. Just saying since IX is the last sw sequel.

Reylow isn’t a normal shipping war situation, though. With Twilight there were two potential romances set up, though it was clear Bella was overwhelmingly attracted to Edward. With Reylow there’s NO romance set up and people are being asked to ignore the romantic overtones between Finn and Rey. Plenty of Finnpoes whose ship would theoretically be “helped” by Reylow are anti Reylow and pro canon Finnrey.

Also this hardly needs to be said but neither Bella x Edward nor Bella x Jacob is a parallel for Reylow nor Finnrey. Both of those guys were pretty creepy and possessive if I recall correctly, and neither wanted to destroy Bella and everyone she loves like Ren does.

Notice how I don’t have to dishonestly erase and ignore the actual context of Finn and Rey’s interactions in order to make these? That’s because these are the beats of an actual meet-cute and not disingenuous distortions of canon. I am critical of how violently Finn was struck in the face and how it was played comedically, but it is part of a common pattern with these stories.

Yes, the Rey and Kyle visuals could look similar if you took their scenes out of all context while disregarding the characters and stories–and that’s the point. These shitty “parallel” posts are attempts to sanitize the context of the originals, as though kidnap, torture, and manipulation constitute a normal meet-cute.

Also isn’t it interesting how these posts disregard an actual “Reylow” parallel where the Light Fury is trapped and terrified, then appears to be borne away against her will? For all that shippers insist the abduction was romantic as hell, it seems they don’t like actually acknowledging Rey’s pain and fear…

…or the fact that this means Kyle’s actual parallel in HTTYD 3 is this wavy-haired douche dressed in black.

Also saying “they’re kid’s movies” to discourage critique is an ass move. Do you think children are immune to issues like abuse and violence in real life? You don’t think children, like the rest of us, use stories to understand and cope with their lives? I know I relied on fiction as a child to deal with things I couldn’t tell people and didn’t even have the vocabulary to express. If anything children’s media need to be scrutinized more, not less, for the ways they’re framing these and other issues.

You’re also a raging hypocrite if you’re fine with kidnap, torture, and manipulation being disguised as a cute and harmless romance and being deliberately put in the tags for a children’s movie (especially when many of the shippers openly admit the ship is a kink for them), but think the people who criticize that practice need to “chill a little.” Fuck. Off.

I don’t understand why it’s so hard for those shippers to acknowledge that he’s a villain. I have an oc I ship with Thrawn (they’re the same species and about the same age) who is a minor antagonist herself. One of the first things I wrote for them was a scene where someone asks her about what he’s done and she just flat out tells them that if they want to hold him accountable for it, she won’t stop them. Because it’s not her job to protect or redeem him.

Yeah I mean… I think the entire universe has told them by this point, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with liking a villain?? There’s no need to twist canon, justify war crimes, or throw actual people under the bus just to lust over some square dude??

I suspect it’s purity wank for some of them, as in nothing they like can be problematic because they are perfect. I suspect also that some really want to see Kyle Ron as justified because of a desire to justify their own or others’ entitlement, abuse, and violence.

Also God bless your OC. I love women who know exactly what they want without any illusions. You go girl, get that sweet blue ass and don’t let anyone shame you for it.

This is probably a dumb question but… is their a way to stop reylow taking over everything?

One thing I’ve been doing is calling them out when they put irrelevant content in the tags I go to, and blocking the worst offenders. A lot of shippers aren’t out-and-out jerks, just ignorant of the effect of their overtagging and crosstagging, and when called on it could change their behavior. The ones who won’t, well that’s what the block button is for.

I was randomly searching up the hunger games on tumblr and a fucking reylo meta is one of the first results. I’m so tired of this. They compare their dumb ship to literally everything on here. It’s impossible to look up anything without seeing their posts.

And they actively brag about putting their posts everywhere, too, making everyone see it whether they want to or not. Yes, filtering is a thing and thank God for it, but it’s still an unwelcome reminder every time I see that shit in completely unrelated places and I know they love overtagging and causing discomfort in people who would rather not be reminded of their ship while browsing for fun. They’re boring assholes who think they’re being clever or endearing, much like their fave himself.

Also let me guess, they’re comparing Peeta to Kyle Ron, right? Another character on the “does not deserve this shit” pile. When will Reylows realize Kyle is President Snow lmao.

i like your opinions but sometimes u really sound like youve never met ppl you discuss (like poc, especially poor lgbt poc) in real life that you sound so fake. u sound like u became Woke by good education, which is fine but have never actually spent time w ppl. like have u ever actually thot abt what really matters to lgbt ppl or poc in their daily lives not something like ace oppression or the importance of interracial relationships between white woman and a moc that only white people care

Because there are no ace ppl of color and, let me guess, discussing aphobia takes away from some mysterious “community resources,” right? In addition, let me register my disappointment that @diversehighfantasy and other Finnrey fans who have spoken against racism in fandom were secretly white and led me on 😦 @jewishcomeradebot is suuuuuuper white I guess, like all Jewish people. (Edit: By which I don’t mean they are inherently poc, I’m just sick of people saying they’re inherently white.) Damn, this really throws off my Wokeducation.

Also this just in, no one can enjoy Finnrey unless it serves a social justice purpose, because it cannot possibly be enjoyable or engrossing on its own and what’s more, no one is allowed to have fandom interests. Thank you so much for the enlightenment, anon.

Indiana Jones and Schindler’s list aren’t very good examples of goyische ownership on holocaust imagery as they aren’t made by goyim (but I’m not sure if I’m misunderstanding why you used them as counter examples to how it’s treated by fans in TFA?)

lj-writes:

I didn’t know Indiana Jones was by Jewish creators, that’s good to know! I wasn’t presenting these movies as examples of claimed goyische ownership of Nazi/Holocaust imagery, though Triumph of the Will would certainly count in that category. I was pointing out that no movie, outside of maybe rigorous academic documentaries, can meet the precise academic standard some fans demand of Star Wars for the FO to be “true” Nazis. Not even, or maybe especially, Triumph of the Will, which depicts actual real-life Nazi officials including Hitler. My point was that the portrayals of Nazis real and fictional has always been partial; even Triumph showed only the parts the Nazis themselves wanted you to see. Why demand such an unrealistically high standard for historical realism of Star Wars, a space action flick? Doesn’t that seem to be aimed at delegitimizing the use of Nazi and Holocaust imagery by a Jewish creator to depict some of the horror and trauma experienced by Jewish people?

Hey there, I’m not a shipper, but I do have my personal doubts about that Chinese interview. The first part, where Daisy is answering a question about Poe and Rey, is available to see as a video. But the second half where she’s talking about Kylo Ren isn’t and that part is only written on that one site. I could be wrong of course, but I still think it’s dubious.

Anon, you’re talking as though this interview was done by another website and Mtime was just one of the many outlets that wrote about it when the truth is, MTIME CONDUCTED THE INTERVIEW. If you look at the Chinese transcript (link) the interviewer is identified as “Mtime.” If you look at the clip from the interview video (link), it says “Mtime” in the upper left corner. If you look at the video the clip was made from, none of the director and cast interview videos (in addition to Daisy and Mark they also interviewed Johnson, Gwendoline, Domhnall, Oscar, Adam, John etc.) is made available online in full. Mtime took only partial clips from each interview and spliced them together into one compilation video that they released online. Does that also cast doubt on the parts of the other interviews, which is most of them, that were not released on video?

So, tell me which is more likely:

A. Mtime, after having conducted interviews with the director and the main cast, released parts of the interview in one compilation video and released the rest in transcript only, likely because the SW audience in China is not big enough to justify editing, subtitling, and uploading all these long videos.

OR

B. Mtime, an entertainment website that is respectable enough to score interviews with the director and the main cast of a Star Wars movie, deviously forged or mistranslated that one part of the interview with Daisy (and all the other transcripts too, because why stop with one?) because they are that dedicated to being anti Reylow, risking their own credibility and relationship with LF. Because that’s how they roll in China, right? It’s a Wild Wild West where they have no standards and anything goes?

If you truly believe option B then I don’t care whether you’re actually a non-shipper as you claim or a Reylow on a fishing expedition, there is no help for your conspiracy theory believing ass. You might as well go with my joke that I was the one who made up that transcript.

There is, of course, the more rational possibility that option A is true and they mistranslated Daisy’s comment by accident, which is why it would have been nice to check against the original video. Judging from the portions of the videos available online, however, the translations in the transcript are quite precise as far as I can tell and I don’t see a reason why the translator would lapse in just that one portion.

(Obviously it’s because the translator is an anti. We are an international conspiracy and nothing can stop us. Well done, anti Reylow comrade! Antis of the world unite!)

Sorry that people seem to feel like you need to do all their research for them. Several Chinese fans translated the interview. The anon can just google and find any of them. It’s not hard. People need to stop assuming they can come to people’s inboxes and demand things.

I enjoy researching things and can find stuff I’ve reblogged before pretty quickly, thanks to a tight tagging system. Plus, that particular ask was on a subject close to my heart–crushing canon reylow shippers’ hopes and dreams. It’s just kind of disheartening when my efforts don’t seem to be appreciated.
