I haven’t read Twilight or seen the movies, but from what I hear it seems to be all about (straight) female wish fulfillment for all its problems, kinda like shoujo manga/soonjung manhwa. TLJ is the worst of both worlds, with the creep factor of Twilight and none of the empowerment.
And I don’t think the twilight guy was a neo-Nazi-like figure and heading a facist organisation, was he?

Oh yes, there’s a good character in that mess of incoherent writing. The Episode IX team would go a long way toward fixing the mistakes Johnson made with her character if they retcon out the bullshit morality lessons and make it clear some of her actions in TLJ were a) reactions to her trauma and b) deeply wrong.
I mean, I don’t think TLJ Rose needs to be necessarily out of character or to have been in an altered state. People can do terrible and destructive things out of grief and pain. The important thing is to make amends and process these emotions appropriately, not to say “That wasn’t me!”
My stance on him is basically that he’s the least worst option right now. If it were Rain I would have given up on the franchise as a lost cause. I don’t believe JJ can erase reylo, though, because it doesn’t exist in canon and he has no control over fandom.
Yeah, I was excited about the potential of her character but I think that ship has sailed. It’s such a waste too, of a great actor and the character’s history with Finn. I hope JJ remembers Kylo Ren’s obsessive hatred of Finn that he himself set up in TFA and makes it pay off in Episode IX.
Your mom almost got it, lol. I mean, I don’t let men of color, or for that matter women, off the hook regarding their sins against female characters, but it’s undeniable that the media is very white male dominated. The fact that so many of them suck at writing female characters doesn’t mean female characters in themselves are the problem.
I’m happy for you that she’s a character you can identify with. I just hope you’ll give me a head start if I have to run from you.
Yeah I mean.. it was so unnecessary and over-the-top. if the tasing had been presented as the awful, unwarranted assault it was and she learned and grew from it, okay. Not perfect, but okay. But it’s not really addressed at all and the whole thing creeps me out.
Oh, you’re far from the only one. I’m translating a comic review by a Korean guy who is both mystified and pissed at her character, and places the blame solely on Liondick, as he calls the guy. (”Rian” sounds similar to “lion” in Korean and “Johnson” is a common slang term for penis.) He went into the movie hearing that Rose is an irritating character, so it’s a very common sentiment. She’s like… some weird combination of ultra-violent dragon lady and commissar, and very little about her story makes sense. Both the character and the actor were vastly underserved by the movie.
I think of it and treat it as a reclaimed slur, especially when used by women. I remember promising to tag it as “gendered slur” a while back, something I have been… very bad at keeping to. Honestly if you object to the use of the word this blog probably isn’t for you, since I use it like every other word lmao.
