Our culture really romanticises the idea
of a brooding misunderstood loner who’s an asshole to everyone
but secretly has a heart of gold, so it’s frighteningly easy to meet a guy who treats everyone around him badly and believe without evidence that he has a heart of gold.
Don’t fall for it.
And a lapse in cruelty is not evidence of kindness.
“A lapse in cruelty is not evidence of kindness” Bolded because that line is so incredibly important
Don’t forget that mistaking “a lapse in cruelty” for “kindness” is EXACTLY how Stockholm Syndrome works mechanism-wise. (And personally, since all it really requires is a strong power imbalance in the relationship, I believe that there’s a lot of room to apply it in adult abusive relationships and even in abusive parent-child relationships.)
Don’t ever let yourself think that someone is a good person because of something awful they could be doing but are not doing, right now. When in doubt, imagine yourself acting the same way to a friend, and ask yourself if you’d still want to be friends with you.
“If you have to tell people to read the novelizations to figure out Finn’s motivations for leaving the first order, then clearly they’re not in the movie” is a thing someone on this hellsite said
But like…
Fandom literally looks at Finn in the village on Jakku and downplay the moment of his literal awakening from his conditioning and years of brainwashing/abuse. They literally look at the movie that makes it clear that the death of his “friend” and the slaughter of the villagers is what makes him give up on the First Order forever and say that it makes no sense for Finn to be good or that he couldn’t have always been good.
Like the evidence isn’t on screen.
So of course we go to the supplementary materials, because it’s the only way people will believe in Finn’s innate goodness or that he’s a main character or that he matters in general.
And because fandom is perpetually racist…
The response is “well if you have to pull up the book, then the movie isn’t clear is it”
The movie is pretty clear.
What’s also clear is the fact that the fandom is actively refusing to pay attention when Finn is on-screen unless they can make his moments about other characters.
He literally TOLD Rey?? What his motivation was??? If fandom chooses not to remember his scenes or believe him, that’s on them and not the movie.
Finn: “You’re still my boyfriend right ? That wasn’t just a dream ?”
Poe: “You bet I am”
No, he’s asking where’s Rey. It is free for you to make your own post. Stop being an utter tit in deliberately ignoring what is in this post. Shoo!
Can I just say it now? Okay, I am ready for the flames, but… when Finn and Poe remeet in TFA, Finn was obviously very happy to see Poe but after their reunion the first thing he says is that he needs to help his friend, ie. Rey. And the first thing Finn asks Poe when he wakes up …. is where Rey is. Like guys… I have absolutely no issue with you shipping Finnpoe… but Rey matter of factly exists. And Finn matter of factly did all of these IMMENSE things for Rey. And yes, he screams her name when he wakes up from coma and asks Poe where she is. These are just facts. Feel free to talk about the way Poe says Finn’s name or something… but please don’t ignore what scenes are actually about.
DO NOT USE FINNPOE TO DERAIL FINNREY POSTS WTF IS THE MATTER WITH PPL
