Pedophilia and rape mention

Got a charming ask from some rando about jerking off to young girls in their car (die in a car crash, assholešŸ™). Their blog is gross as fuck, too, they reblog porn saying they’d rape the model. Idek what the occasion is, did I set off some creep by talking about pedos in fandom? Well guess what, fuckers? I’m going to call you out even more.

whoever runs @dailyfinn is so annoying right now with all those ugly finnrose kiss gifs. ewwww. bye ill find daily finn content somewhere that doesnt have a side of abusive ship attached to it.

Ew just saw it on my dash and unfollowed. Finn is just so singularly unenthusiastic in that scene, it’s uncomfortable on multiple levels.

Hey no offense but I’m gonna have to unfollow for awhile. I’m black and you posting these obviously antiblack, racist anons makes me feel some type of way. Yeah I know you’re trying to highlight their ignorance but black people still gotta read that shit and I’m not doing it. āœŒšŸ¾

I completely understand. Antiblack racism doesn’t affect me directly so I can afford to kick these anons around and laugh, but for those whose humanity is directly implicated it can be a whole different story. I’m embarrassed to say I did not quite realize how hostile fandom is to Black fans. In many ways I still don’t, of course.

Followers, do you have opinions on how to handle this? Would it be better to delete these asks rather than give these assholes a platform? Maybe rather than publish them I could take screenshots and give the receipts to someone like @diversehighfantasy who researches fandom racism, if she would find them useful.

I’ll take the receipts. So much of this stuff gets wiped away, to the point where a lot of fans don’t believe it happens. At the very least it should be archived to counter revisionism.

BTW, this goes for anyone from any fandom receiving racist asks. If you don’t want to post them because you don’t want to post racist shit on your blog, screenshot it and send it to me as a submission. I’ll archive it.

i don’t blame you for not taking those trolls seriously because the shit they say is so off-the-wall and completely oblivious so it flies over most of our heads, without considering the negative connotations of it. then i remember that this horrible racism stems from how threatened they are by finn and they’re channeling their kylie ron by attacking finn stans who tell the truth. the sequel trilogy, bar finn, was ultimately a mistake.

It’s just so shitty that for every work that has great representation that fans, especially Black fans, can be happy about, there’s a corresponding price in heightened racist backlash. If it were just the fandom that would be one thing, but the way the franchise itself has been blatantly mishandling characters of color and genocide/war crimes motifs leads me to agree with you: Star Wars was a mistake (but thanks for all the Finn).

i really do appreciate everything you do for the fandom and the constant trolls you’re getting makes me frustrated. it’s very unsettling to see the anti-black trolls published and idk a way to handle them other than just ignoring them altogether. right now, the racist asks existing on your blog can maybe be tagged with “Lj handles racist trolls” like someone else suggested, but from this point forward, may i suggest just not giving them a platform? that’s what i see best fit atm.

I agree! They could be archived to display fandom racism (and maybe laughed at because holy shit), but otherwise they shouldn’t be given a platform in a way they control, especially unfiltered. I apologize for my thoughtlessness, it’s another part of my privilege in not having to think about racism on a day-to-day basis. I’ve been treating it like some kind of game when it’s not, it’s hatred.

Post them and just tag them with a warning. These people need to be exposed. When I talk about how shitty the Star Wars fandom is,THIS is what I want to point to. Seriously, f*ck this new era of Star Wars. I’m so tired of it.

That’s my thinking too, but on the other hand I’m disturbed by how I’ve been interacting with these asks. It’s a joke to me because, well, it’s not exactly the highest-grade ā€œargumentsā€ they’re making, but also because the racism doesn’t affect me directly. Not only am I not Black, I’m not a minority the way Asian people living in other parts of the world are. So answering these asks has become more like, ā€œHaha, this is so funny and I’m so clever (compared to this asshole, which, high bar)!ā€ rather than about empathy for what Black people and other POCs go through in fandom spaces and in life. By answering these asks I have also unthinkingly been using my blog as a platform for racism, which is exactly what the anon (God I hope it’s just one) wanted. It’s become a collusion between them and me, they get the exposure they want and I get to look smart in my own mind by kicking them around. That doesn’t feel remotely okay now that I look back on it.

I do agree that these people should be exposed and these asks have informational value about what fandom is like if nothing else. I will continue archiving racist asks I receive in the future and will potentially air them in some controlled way–maybe give them to someone who keeps records, maybe post to a separate fandom racism receipts blog–but I won’t give racists the platform they want or treat the whole thing as a joke.
