I know your proposed Episode VII didn’t have Hux or Phasma in it, but I had an idea. Obviously, the First Order are neonazi-analogues, but the story in Force Awakens starts after they’ve come to power. These versions of Hux and Phasma would represent what a lot of neonazis are today: presenting as normal while secretly harboring hateful ideologies. Phasma would be a Captain in the New Republic military. Perhaps she would be the person that takes Finn from Poe and Rey. She justifies her brutality as part of the need for control, echoing Finn’s brainwashed statements. She might appear earlier as a (somewhat) likable commander for security forces. Her ties to the brainwashed army would be revealed probably towards the end of the first movie.

Hux, on the other hand, would play a slower burn. I’m thinking he would take the role of Chancellor Organa’s aide. He might be a bumbling (seeming) sidekick to Ben. He’s present for all of the important conversations Leia has with Poe, but always in the background. He works as the counterspy to Poe. His friendship with Ben would be part of his radicalization. Whenever Ben feels doubts about his need for control, Hux would say something about Leia also needing control, such as utilizing the underworld through Han. Obviously, it’ll be Ben’s decision to go fascist, but we’ll have more of a reason than “biological granddad is evil” or “uncle once thought about killing him”. Hux’s betrayal could be revealed towards the end of the Kashyyyk act, calling in the First Order (or whatever it’s called) in Chewbacca for harboring fugitives. By this point, Ben would’ve already aligned himself, ideologically if not literally, with these fascists.

L.J.: I love these concepts of Phasma and Hux–her as the brutal enforcer, him as the sneaky silver-tongued snake in the grass. My Big Bad organization is caled the Galactic Union, in that it’s a “union” of exiled Empire forces and defected Republic officials. They have the idea that they are some kind of peacemaker who are ending a destructive conflict (and also “saving” Mandalorian children from their violent barbarism by kidnapping and brainwashing them) and their symbol resembles the yin-yang symbol.

It seems as though Phasma will not return. What do you make of that? Why would they tease us she was going to come back when she isn’t? Idk why but it feels like either the writers hate her or Disney was too scared little girls might look up to Phasma. Or maybe Disney thinks girls can’t be evil.

Disney has many great female villains, so I don’t think it’s that.

Phasma was a victim of Johnson’s slash-and-burn editing of Finn’s arc. The Real (deleted) scene, where Finn reveals she betrayed the First Order, is so much fuller than the final edit and would have made her end more satisfying if she doesn’t come back for epIX.

She was wasted and it would be a shame if she didn’t reappear.

The thing is, though Disney had many great villainesses I don’t think it ever had anyone quite like Phasma, a militaristic and faceless menace. Disney villainesses were for the most defined by the markers of traditional femininity, and often driven by vices stereotypically attributed to women, such as vanity (Cruella, Goethel) and petty grudges (Maleficent in the Sleeping Beauty movie, though not her own newer movie). Phasma very consciously had NO frills at all, she didn’t even show her body or face for most of her few appearances, and she showed a very different facet of evil. She was nothing new in the SW universe with her closest progenitor being Darth Vader, but she was also the franchise’s only female villain on the big screen. I believe villains can be as empowering as heroes, and Phasma was pretty important. I mourn that she might not be coming back after being so criminally underutilized.

Day 3: Favorite relationship

It
was not easy to chose as i love Finn interracting with pretty much everyone.
But I ADORE his antagonistic
relationship with Phasma. She was his commanding officer and while she
disagreed with his decisions when he was a trooper cadet, she saw potential in
him to be an officer. It’s clear that she’s his most direct abuser and was disappointed and “sad” to a level that he left the FO when she believed he could do great things for them. I love how at the end of tfa, he could give her what she deserved, overpower her for once. And their fight, yet cut down, was the thing i was the most excited for in tlj. i’m also biased because john and gwendolyne seems like good friends.

You know what, it’s fine if you don’t want Finn and Rey to end up together and Rey to not have a romantic partner. You want your aro representation, your ace representation, your badass male-female platonic friendship representation. That’s your prerogative, go to town with it and have fun!

What you can’t do is pretend that the relative unpopularity of finnrey as a ship in the fandom as a whole is for the sake of this progressive, girl-power, ace-positive representation. You know what’s an actual, canon representation of a platonic male-female friendship? Mad Max: Fury Road. Max and Furiosa, two strangers and enemies, learning to love and care for each other without a flirtatious glance in sight. Now that was a great, non-romantic friendship between a man and a woman.

And guess what the most popular pairing in the MM fandom is by a large margin? Max x Furiosa. Where’s all the ace-positivity and boys and girls can be friends rah-rah feminism there? Nah, fandom is a highly sexualized space that interprets any intense interaction (at least between people that fit the Aesthetic) as sexual/romantic, and it is not predominantly platonic/ace friendly. No matter what you personally want in terms of representing male-female friendship, it does not explain why Finnrey gets so little attention in the fandom as a whole.

So keep your “but platonic friendship!” comments out of posts about Finnrey and fandom racism. Don’t try to make a discussion about fandom biases about you and how good a person you are. We heard it all before, it doesn’t add up, and we don’t give a shit about your virtue signaling and look-at-me-I’m-so-good-ism.

And why do you get so defensive when Finnrey comes up anyway? No one’s saying you personally need to ship Finnrey. We’re talking about fandom in the aggregate, and don’t have the power to make you ship or stop shipping anything. So why do you care enough to derail posts that are not about you in any way?

I suspect you do it because it stings on some level. I think these discussions make you wonder if you, too, might share fandom’s biases. That these large-scale trends might also explain something about you. I suspect you go out of your way to derail, deflect, and defend because you’re uncomfortable.

That’s good. Be uncomfortable. Question your assumptions. (Which is not the same thing as questioning your self-worth and feelings, lmao. You people who try to conflate all personal discomfort with abuse are ugly.) Explore your discomfort instead of running from it, though by all means take whatever space and time you need–there’s no hurry. That’s how you grow. That’s how you learn.

But for God’s sake, learn on your own time without barging into conversations that don’t concern you. Just… stop derailing Finnrey threads. We’re tired of it.

As someone that identifies as a gray ace (maybe aromantic, not quite sure on that part yet), I’ve been really disappointed with how asexuality has been represented in the fandom. Many asexual!Rey fanfic writers/stans don’t identify as asexual themselves and I wonder what they think actually being asexual is like. I can only think of two decent fics where ace!Rey is written in a realistic and positive manner. Most asexuals crave companionship of some kind, and about 2/3 of asexuals will say that they experience some sort of romantic attraction. So doing the “Rey is ace and don’t need no man” thing gets old pretty quickly and seems to fit the “forever alone/hates men/women” stereotypes that many asexuals are trying to combat. Then there are those that use the sexuality to make finnpoe happen, which really isn’t cool either, depending on how the story is written.

But yes, as an asexual that will go down with the finnrey ship, it’s really annoying to see people try to derail the ship because something about it makes them uncomfortable. Usually, the discomfort stems from racism or het-is-ew.

The canon doesn’t do any better a job of ace representation either, when you consider that apparently the only clear canon asexual character in the sequel timeline is Captain Phasma, and her never having sex is presented in her novel as part and parcel of her enigma and cruel selfishness. Aces being dehumanized? Must be Tuesday!

Ace Rey and/or ace Finn dating would be a really awesome premise for a fanfic, come to think of it. (And it is kind of telling that ace Rey is a far more common headcanon than ace Finn–I have biases, too.) The two of them having fun, fighting evil, saving the universe side-by-side, enjoying awesome cooking, having long and heartfelt conversations, cuddling into the night and falling asleep with nice dreams because they are by each other’s side. Media, both professional and fan-generated, are sorely lacking in positive representations of nonsexual intimate relationships and we need more of that, damn it.

One thing I am really hoping JJ doesn’t do is bring Phasma back. Again. But given that she somehow survived being put into a trash compacter on a planet that then exploded I wouldn’t be surprised if he did. We don’t technically see her die in TLJ either…

Yeah, I was excited about the potential of her character but I think that ship has sailed. It’s such a waste too, of a great actor and the character’s history with Finn. I hope JJ remembers Kylo Ren’s obsessive hatred of Finn that he himself set up in TFA and makes it pay off in Episode IX.
