Currently reading @awakening5‘s A New Order (link), which is awesome. Finn and Rey being the best of friends with sexual and romantic tension all over the place? Check. Finn and Poe having disagreements, even heated ones, but staying good friends and consummate professionals? Check. Rey supporting the heck out of Finn? Check. Bad guys being deliciously  backstabby? Check.

I haven’t been reading much fanfic or indeed much fiction at all lately, and I had almost forgotten the sheer pleasure of immersing myself in a story with characters I love. It feels healing to be doing it again, like I’m reconnecting with a part of myself.

The Last Strike of the Empire

For the individual writing ESB into TLJ…

First things first, the cast of characters.
Luke=Rey
Leia=Rose
Han=Finn
Chewbacca=Poe
C-3P0=BB-8
Vader=Ren
Piett=Hux
Boba=Phasma
Emperor=Snoke
Yoda=Luke
And, to round out the cast, early introduction of Ackbar and Mothma as Leia and Holdo respectively.

Plot Changes:
1.) The movie starts where ANH left off. Imperial Star Destroyers converge on the Rebel Base on Yavin IV. Ackbar orders Gold Squadron to take out a destroyer but a lot of people die, so he slaps Chewbacca, who was leading the charge.

2.) Han says he’s leaving, since this isn’t his rebellion. Leia tases him and brings him on board one of the fleeing ships.

3.) Obi-Wan tells Luke to go to the Dagobah system, and that Yoda will single-handedly save everyone.

4.) The Emperor uses the force to beat up Piett and yells at Vader to take his ridiculously iconic mask off. For the rest of the movie, Vader’s bald head is exposed to the audience (to humanize him!)

5.) Bald Vader attacks the Rebel Fleet with TIE bombers (but only once). He has a sad flashback to him and Ackbar in the Clone Wars together, but his cronies blow up the bridge anyway.

6.) Ackbar, being a fish, swims back on board and passes out for the rest of the movie. Mon Mothma is put in charge, which gets Chewie’s goat.

7.) The Empire is tracking the Rebellion, slowly, and Mon Mothma has done nothing but stand still for three hours. Han and Leia decide to fly to Bespin to find a master codebreaker to magically disable the Imperial ships, and they bring C3P0 with them.

8.) Luke finds Yoda and tries to give him his lightsaber, but Yoda throws it into a bog. Also, there’s like, little birds everywhere.

9.) Cloud City has slavery and animal abuse, the latter of which is a big problem for Leia, but Han loves the place until he sees a tauntaun get smacked.

10.) Instead of getting Lobot, they settle for Lando, whom C3P0 broke out prison using his coin launcher.

11.) Luke mopes around on Dagobah, but Bald Vader makes contact with him and they begin a creepy back and forth, complete with a shirtless scene and Luke getting over Vader’s killing of Obi-Wan.

12.) Yoda trains Luke, but Luke gets angry when he finds out Yoda tried to kill Bald (only used name for Vader at this point) after he massacred children on Coruscant.

13.) Lando is offered money and betrays his new allies.

14.) Boba Fett shows up, but Han takes him out.

15.) Luke joins Bald on the Star Destroyer, where Bald kills the Emperor across the galaxy, and they fight Imperial Guards in an admittedly visually stunning scene.

16.) Bald reveals he’s Luke’s father, but Luke leaves.

17.) Mon Mothma activates her omega-beam to destroy all of the ships, but she waited too long and the rebellion, out of gas, crash lands on Hoth.

18.) Wedge tastes Hoth and says, “Snow.”

19.) Han, Chewie, and Leia fly out on snowspeeders to stop the AT-ATs, but most of them give up before they get halfway. Han keeps going so Leia shoots him down to give him a line about when they go low we go high. Also, she loves him. Han didn’t know.

20.) Our Rebels safely make it back inside Echo Base, and Bald beats up Piett some more.

21.) Yoda Force projects onto Hoth.

22.) Luke lands on Hoth and every single surviving member of the Rebellion climbs on his X-Wing to fly out of there.

Obviously, make it your own fic, but please do share when done. (Moth)

How would Episode VIII work in your universe? (Moth)

Now that the Galactic Union has turned the Republic and Mandalorians against each other, it’s going to try and stage a comeback using the distraction. They have a powerful Force user on their side now–Ben Solo, now called Kylo Ren–and they also have the Crusaders, the Mandalorian-born troops stolen as children. It’s going to be up to Finn, Rey, and Poe to try and foil them and keep gathering information to let the Republic and Mandalorians know they’ve been tricked into this war. Leia, despite being a fugitive, is talking secretly to her trusted contacts in the Senate trying to end the war. Lando fends off a Mandalorian attack himself and actually strikes a rapport with their commander, Idrian Fett, the Chief Commander of the invasion and a clansman of the Mandalore Boba Fett himself. Idrian (played by Idris Elba) is a good and honorable man but hates the Republic because his son was stolen by what he believes to be Republic commandos AND YES THE SON IS EXACTLY WHO YOU THINK IT IS.

Meanwhile Rey’s search for her family comes to a tragic conclusion when, in the course of the mission, she finds out that the site where she was left behind by her family and later found by space scavengers was also the place where a Mandalore-Republic skirmish took place. She is devastated to learn that her parents most likely left her behind to keep her safe while acting as a distraction to draw the Mandalorians away from her. The leader of the mission on the Mandalorian side, and the man who likely killed her parents, was Idrian Fett. Finn holds her and cries with her; the pair affirm they may have no family but do have each other. Rey vows to take her revenge on Fett and make him know her pain.

The trio together with Han undertake a daring mission to steal crucial information from the Union headquarters. They find out that the Union is now headed for Coruscant itself, and will be mobilizing its moles in the Republic security forces itself (the chief of them being Phasma) to take it over. They face down Kylo Ren while leaving with this information, with Rey’s Force sensitivity showing itself in the fight. This is also when Kylo Ren accidentally kills his father, who had joined the mission on the hope of bringing back his son and was acting as a distraction. The trio just barely make their escape while Ren is completely destroyed with grief, rocking his father’s dying body in his arms.

Despite the Falcon jumping into hyperspace, the Union ships keep catching up to them and the trio cannot get away. They make a sweep of the ship, frantic to find the tracker, but nothing shows up. Then Finn has a terrible suspicion and turns the sweep on himself; the tracker was implanted in him, likely years ago without his knowledge. With Union ships gaining on them, fuel running low and no time to find and remove the tracker, he makes his way to an airlock. Rey follows and begs him not to eject–they’ll find some other way.

Finn appears to relent and comes to envelope her in an embrace. Rey tells him she can’t do this without him, and Finn tells her she means more to him than anything in the galaxy. They share a tender kiss, and Finn uses the distraction to push her clear of the airlock and locks himself in. He ejects, his eyes locked with Rey’s in longing, while Poe runs onto the scene. Rey screams for Finn and, in a burst of Force ability, almost pulls him back in. Finn breaks her pull, showing his own Force ability for the first time. Poe physically pulls Rey back from the airlock, himself fighting tears, and orders BB to take them into hyperspace. The Falcon makes the jump, no longer trackable, and Finn is picked up by one of the pursuing Union ships just as he is running out of air.

Soulmate au and arranged marriage au mashup for Finnrey please :^)

satinfawn:

im also adding a royalty aspect cause thats just how i am, hope you dont mind!

hmmm I’d probably have the soulmate aspect be with some kind of birth mark that just so happens to be hidden from viewmost of the time on both Finn and Rey (on the left hip).

Finn and Rey were childhood friends and their parents planned for them to marry from the very beginning. When they both reach adult-ish age the marriage finally happens and neither party is dissatisfied persay, but at this point they aren’t really in love or anything. Things go well though, with them sharing separate rooms and living together happily before they have to act like a happily married couple who loves each other when Rey’s more than morally questionable brother Kylo comes to visit them.

He’s finally gotten the news that Rey had married and has come with ideas of ‘freeing’ her because he likes the control he has over her as an older sibling. He goes and causes some trouble with the knights of Ren and causes a bit of an uproar.

As this is going on and Rey and Finn are trying to calm it down, they begin to notice things about the other that they never had before and begin to get feelings for each other. Finn realizes these feelings and tries to get close enough to tell Rey, but she begins to shut her self off thinking that things would go back to how they were before.

After Rey hears about Kylo trying to organised another riot, she goes off to try and stop him. Before she leaves when she’s changing into clothes more suitable for outdoor ware, Finn comes in to try and stop her. He sees the soulmate mark that he also has in the exact same place and shows her his mark. Rey is shocked but is still determined to go stop Kylo. Before she leaves, she kisses Finn and he wishes her luck.

Rey arrives at the campsite where Kylo is waiting for her and he orders for her to be contained so that she is unable to escape. She fights and tries to talk some sense into him, but is ultimately outnumbered by the knights.

Finn feels that something is off and that Rey is in danger and sends for help from Han and Leia. He goes off to Kylo’s camp and confronts him, asking where Rey is. Hearing Finn, Rey creates a plan to go help him, and sneaks past the knights and surprises Kylo. Finn and Rey fight him and Leia arrives with Han. She knocks Kylo out and they all live happily ever after except for Kylo is is imprisoned for his crimes.

Hello??

Plot twist: this is based off your reincarnation theory @lj-writes

After crashing on Naboo after escaping the First Order after another successful Stormtrooper liberation, Finn is nursed back to health by Padme’s still living family. They can’t help but think that something, just something, reminds them of the aunt they use to know. They shake the feeling though.

Finn tells them about the freedom he’s fighting for the Stormtroopers, his friends in the Resistance, and the Jedi he fell in love with that came from a desert planet. The family swears his story sounds familiar, yet also different…

Finally after a few weeks of healing, a New Republic ship shows up for Finn. A short haired brunette girl with a long Jedi Padawan braid jumps out of the ship before it lands and runs up to Finn, crushing him in a bone crushing embrace. Crying, laughing, and light jests are heard from the shorter force user, but Finn just smiles like a damn fool in love.

As the two leave Naboo, the family that cared for Finn watched them go with a warm smile on their faces. Memories of a Jedi that walked on the sky and their warrior Queen who fought for freedom flooded back to them.

Padme and Anakin had found each other once more.

They also recognized that snappy sense of fashion!

The totally never gonna happen, non canon way I would do Star Wars Episode IX (part 1)

Opening Crawl

5 years after the battle on Crait, the galaxy has fallen into an all out war. New Republic’s galactic senate has split, the Centrists have deflected and allied their worlds with the First Order, while the Populist have remained loyal to the New Republic. Independent worlds that were once neutral, have now sworn their loyalty to the New Republic to combat the threat to the galaxy.

The last princess of Alderaan, leader of the Resistance, General Leia Organa, has been elected as Chancellor of the New Republic. The remnants of the Resistance now serve under the New Republic directly and are led by the Military Commander General Lando Calrissian.

Only the force knows who will win this war, and if there will be a galaxy left after it is over…

Battle on the Absolution

Onboard the First Order’s ship Absolution, commander Rey is held prisoner and restrained in a cell guarded by Stormtroopers. An officer, Dopheld Mitaka, tells the Stormtroopers guarding her that Supreme leader Kylo Ren and Grand Marshal Armitage Hux will be arriving soon and Rey is to be taken to them.

Upon overhearing this, Rey subtly activates the tracker implanted inside her revealed robotic prosthetic hand.

New Republic ships arrive out of light speed led by Admiral Poe Dameron and start attacking the ship immediately after the beacon is set off.

Officer Mitaka, noticing the treachery, goes to shot Rey while she is restrained, but one of the Stormtroopers Force pulls a lightsaber from across the room and slices it in half. The Stormtrooper removes their helmet and it’s revealed the trooper is Finn!

Officer Mitaka orders the other Stormtrooper to shoot Finn, but the other Stormtrooper tasers Mitaka. The other Stormtrooper takes off their helmet as well and it’s Rose Tico. She releases Rey from her restraints, and Finn tosses the Jedi her lightsaber.

Rey throws her arms around Finn and the two have a moment…at least until Rose reminds them they are on a mission. The two break apart.

Finn radios Poe and tells him the infiltration was a success.

Alarms begin to go off around the ship and Stormtroopers start attacking other Stormtroopers. The ship descends into anarchy.

Stormtroopers and cadets that Finn has managed to turn have marked their helmets with Red streaks to identify themselves as loyal to Finn.

It turns out that Rey’s capture was planned to lure the First Order into a surprise attack and neutralize the leaders of the FO while distrscting them at the same time as Finn turned some of the Stormtroopers in his favor as he went undercover with Rose to watch over Rey steal intelligence from the First Order.

As the war waged on, both sides gained more resources and numbers. Finn used this to his advantage and started to infiltrate First Order bases and start uprisings among their ranks. The Absolution was the longest and most difficult mission because of how many times he had been undercover. This was the last time he could do it. The security was getting too difficult.

After the events of the Supremacy 5 years ago, Rose had become Maz Kanata’s apprentice and learned hacking to the point of being near Maz’s level of skill. It was a great deal of helps on missions like these.

Rose hacks into the FO’s sever and downloads the intel they needed and the three go to join in the battle aboard the ship.

Outside of the Absolution Poe and the Black squadron are engaged in combat with Tie-Fighters as they try to sink the Absolution.

Inside the Absolution, Rose alerts Finn and Rey that the ship doesn’t have long left. It’s then that the knights of Ren appear and join the fray, cutting down every deflecting trooper.

Rey orders Rose to retreat with the cadets and Stormtroopers, her and Finn will handle the Knights of Ren.

Over the last few years Rey had grown in the force was now a Jedi Master. She had trained alongside Finn with her master, though Finn hadn’t been able to committ himself to the Jedi or helping the Order reform due to his duties helping the reformed Stormtroopers.

Finn and Rey engage in a 2 on 6 fight with the knights of Ren as the ship begins to burn around them. Finn displays a remarkable skill with his lightsaber using the Soresu fighting style of defense, while Rey’s mastery of the Vaapad fighting style is allowing her to dominate the knights.

Poe tells them that the ship is about to blow and for them to get back to the ship, which both do and escape the Knights of Ren.

The NR forces escape the explosion of the Absolution and jump into light speed.

Rey, Finn, Poe, and Rose arrive on Yavin IV and report to Military Commander Lando Calrissian. Lando congratulates then on another successful mission. The intel they gathered will help them with their next mission. Kes Dameron arrives to go over a briefing of the mission with Poe and Lando. After some final words of encouragement, Lando dismisses the others.

Finn goes to the barracks where the reformed Stormtroopers have been living since he started the Stormtrooper rebellion and he is welcomed warmly by the troopers. In the middle of the barracks is a young woman wearing Jedi robes, she notices Finn and the two share a warm embrace.

The woman’s name is Caro, Finn’s twin sister. A sister Finn didn’t even know he had till BB-8 had given him his First Order file after their infiltration on Snoke’s ship years ago. Caro had been taken alongside him when they were young and put into the Stormtrooper program. Finding her wasn’t the reason Finn started the Stormtrooper Rebellion, but she damn well was his incentive to making sure it didn’t fail. It took 2 years to find her, but he finally did it… thanks to an old friend. Turned out Caro had been force sensitive too, and Rey’s master had offered to train her as well. Said master was probably meeting with Rey at that moment if Caro was here.

Rey found her master calmly meditating with his hood up by an old, large Force tree. She greeted the older grey haired man warmly and he looked up at her with a kindness in his eyes. Luke lowered his hood and smiled at his student, offering her to join him in his meditation.

Should I continue?

UH YES. CONTINUE AWAY!

Okay will do! Thanks @vaderey

I heard the SW theme play in my head during the moment Finn and Rose took off their helmets 😂

Talking and laughing would be good enough for me for a start. Establishing them as friends for a while now, especially since there’s been a time skip and they’ll have gone through some shit together offscreen.

I want Poe wingmanning for Finn and Rey, poking at Rey to talk to Finn about her feelings. She swats at Poe, too nervous to talk to her own best friend.

I want Finn and Rey doing the same for Poe, encouraging him to ask out Lando’s super-cute aide (who also happens to be Lando’s son and is played by Chadwick Boseman i can dream ok) and, when Poe insists the guy is out of his league, take matters into their own hands by trapping Poe into talking to him alone.

I want them to have real drama together, like Finn wants to help the Stormtrooper uprising and Rey, still upset about his attempted self-sacrifice at Crait, is strongly against his taking such a risk. Poe tries to mediate and strategize, but his worry for Finn still shines through. And, of course, they’re coming with him and won’t hear his objections.

I want them in ACTION together, Poe in sniper mode again and Finn and Rey cutting a swathe through the enemy with Poe watching their back.

I would love it if they confronted Kylo Ren together, the three people he tortured, wounded, and manipulated facing him off side by side, the true successors to the heroic trio he would have all butchered if he weren’t such a flop.

I want to see them celebrating together, hugging and kissing. I want to see Finn spin Rose around in the air, I want to see Rey squeeze Poe until he begs for mercy, I want Finn and Rey to share an epic victory kiss (and Rey would be the one to dip him, of course). I want them to revel in the joy of victory and of being alive with each other in a galaxy that is once again free from terror.

I loved everything about this list!

Side note: In the TFA visual guide it says Poe has his mother’s ring as a necklace that he intends to give to his partner one day.

Imagine if we see one of Lando’s kids wearing Poe’s mother’s ring and we don’t find out till a little bit in the film that Poe got married to him and the baby casting notice is a refugee baby Poe and his husband adopted

It’s a tinfoil hat theory, but I think it’s sweet.

*dies from sweetness overload* Also it would be a way to overcome Disney’s homophobia by having nothing too overt on screen while also making it BLINDINGLY clear.

The marriage and adoption could have happened before EP-IX.

Star Treck Beyond did it and JJ produced the film and he loved the idea.

JJ loved the idea that Sulu was a gay character and liked how it was handled in a way that wasn’t controversial, but natural. If that’s the direction JJ and Oscar want for Poe, I can see that happening.

I feel like Disney could fix what they did to Valkyrie when they cut the short clip that confirmed she was bi-sexual.

Maybe the Rebels gain refuge on Cloud City with Lando, and Poe’s counterpart in coordinating their resources is Lando’s heir Ekino. Or maybe Leia decides to take a page out of their enemies’ playbook and the Resistance become a mobile strike force (I mean there are few enough of them left…), with Ekino being Lando’s liaison. Poe and Ekino grow close as they talk supplies and strategy, and Poe sometimes wonders what this devastatingly handsome man who is brave enough and generous enough to pour his fortune into and risk his life for the fight against the FO sees in him. He wonders if this make him a gold digger while Finn and Rey inform him that he is ridiculous. Ekino himself can’t believe that this daredevil and hero, the acclaimed pilot who flew so many missions for THE Leia Organa, actually returns his feelings.

Their feelings get a little complicated and they start seeing each other less. When begging Poe to just talk to Ekino doesn’t work Finn and Rey trap them into a one-on-one meeting, and Ekino confesses to Poe that a part of him always sought meaning in his life beyond his riches, that he yearned to live up to and even surpass his father’s heroism. But now that the universe has tragically given him all too much of an opportunity he is afraid, though glad to serve, all the more because he has a new fear–losing Poe. They lean into a long, sweet, kiss.

By this time Kes has barged his way into the Resistance despite Poe’s entreaties and threats to stay safe on the family farm. ”M’ijo, I’ve been here before. If you think anywhere is safe try turning on the holos for five minutes.” He, Leia, and Lando exchange knowing looks as they watch Poe and Ekino falling deeper and deeper for each other. They, along with Lando’s spouses Kaasha and Lobot, plus a holoimage of a smiling Shara that Kes carries everywhere, are there for the ceremony when Poe gives Shara’s ring to Ekino and Ekino, in true Calrissian fashion, gifts him with a dashing cape.

@lj-writes

Why the hell you trying to give me diabetes with that sweet shit? Black Squadron at the wedding cheering Poe on like goofballs. Jessika and Rose sharing a dance, Finn being the best man, Rey talking Poe out of cold feet, Kes and Leia bonding over their lost spouses and having a sweet friendship, Rey and Finn realizing their relationship might go deeper than friendship, Chewie in a space Tux, and Poe happy!

Fuck we need some fics. Give Poe a husband, you cowards!

I thought I was the only one who shipped Jess and Rose! It’s awkward because I previously shipped Jessika with Paige; put the two headcanons together and you get one fucked-up tragic premise. And aaahhhh I love wedding romances so much–Finn and Rey dancing together to slow music, looking into each others’ eyes, each wanting to speak but afraid to, yet their eyes say it all…

Karé is in the wedding party and catches the eye of Ekino’s maid of honor, his sister Yamina, who is an artist of galactic acclaim and gives a stunningly beautiful performance at the wedding that leaves everyone in tears. Yamina is played by Janelle Monáe with sky-blue hair and no body paint, because this is CANONICALLY how Twi’lek genes work when mixed with human ones.

Hey I’ve always wondered, if you were in charge of the Sequels, how would you have done it? Would you of continued the story or would you have taken Finn, Rey, and Poe on an entirely different adventure and left the Empire Vs Rebels storyline stay with the OT?

I would not have repeated the OT’s central conflict quite so blatantly, mostly because unlike JJ I had no idea that it could sell, much less be a record-breaking hit 😂 My vision of the ST would probably have been a more PT-like affair, but about the struggle of building a New Republic in contrast to the ending of the Old.

A brief summary because I ended up writing a monstrosity under the cut: Poe’s adventures as a New Republic pilot and spy reporting to Leia the Republic Chancellor, a more gradual deprogramming process for Finn who is a kidnapped Mandalorian child soldier and the main antagonist for the whole first movie, Rey as a world-weary space scavenger looking for her family. Ben Solo starts out as a powerful but arrogant Jedi whose outsized pride and understandable resentments lead him over three movies to become the Big Bad while Finn goes in the opposite direction, reclaiming his heritage and fighting back against the organization that stole him as a child.

I’d have made Poe an officer in the New Republic (which is his actual background in the ST, of course) leading a mission given him by Chancellor/First Senator Leia Organa to investigate a disturbance in Mandalorian space. The NR and the Mandalorians are negotiating peace and trade treaties, but the Mandalorians are distracted by raids on their outlying settlements and, most disturbingly, their children being stolen. They blame the Republic, or at least its inability to reign in the chaos in their space which they believe simply pushed the raiders and slavers into Mandalore space. The Mandalorians also bitterly remember how clones of one of their warriors were used as slave soldiers by the old Republic. Some even suspect the Republic is trying to build another Mandalorian army. Leia wants to stop these raids, but it’s not easy gaining a skittish Senate’s support for missions outside Republic space. Poe has to find the smoking gun on these raiders to bring the Senate around. Along the way he is helped by Master Luke Skywalker and his apprentice, Jedi Knight Ben Solo, who ends up coming along with his old friend and rival (and implied old flame, depending on how much I can get away with).

Poe ends up being captured, however, just as he and Ben are nearing the raiders’ base. Poe kills one of the raiders that he took as a Mandalorian pirate and then is taken down by one of the dead man’s fellows–another seeming Mandalorian who fights with devastating effectiveness and ejects Ben into space before taking Poe prisoner. This is Finn. Poe escapes later when Ben, who had saved himself with the Force, comes back to save him, seething with wounded pride–something he has quite a lot of–that he was bested and almost killed by a non-Force user. He, Ben Solo, Master Skywalker’s finest student! A Skywalker by blood! He vows that there will be a rematch.

Poe and Ben have escaped, but are far from home free. The ship they stole to escape is damaged in pursuit and they hide from pursuers in a debris field, occasionally bickering, and several scavengers come upon them only to squabble among themselves over salvage rights. The winner is a tough young woman who arrived in a cloaked ship before blasting everyone else away–Rey, who’s a lot like Valkyrie from Thor: Ragnarok and is played by Devery Jacobs the way God intended. Ben and Poe instead convince her to help them out and they’ll give her anything she likes. What she really wants is to find her family, in search of whom she’s been traveling ever since she got off the junkyard planet Jakku. Poe promises the full support of the Republic for her search.

According to the information Poe had managed to extract from the ship’s databanks it turns out that someone is building an army with stolen children and, what’s more, this started decades ago. They appear to be remnants of the Empire. The mysterious warrior Finn may have been one of the first wave that was taken, judging by his age. Poe and the others need to take this information to the Senate and Mandalore, but are slowed by Finn’s dogged pursuit before Rey sets a clever trap and they take him and his crew prisoner. Finn fully expects to be tortured and killed, and is angry at the death of his friend Slip at Poe’s hands. Finn refuses to divulge anything but Poe and the others can tell just from the way he talks about the Republic that he was heavily indoctrinated his whole life. He is honorable, however–he asks that Poe spare his crew and that they execute just Finn himself as an example. Rey thinks Finn is a lost cause, which stance Ben is inclined to side with, but Poe tries to get Finn into the reality-based community which mostly has the effect of making Finn defensive. More than actual facts, however, Finn is confused at how well he and his crew are treated. On the one hand he suspects a trick, obviously, but the first seeds of doubt are planted.

Finn, however, is far from naive–he has extensive knowledge of galactic politics and military and makes some sharp critiques of the Republic’s incompetence and injustices, and his arguments actually have an effect on both Poe and Ben. Ben has seen the pressures his mother is under trying to run the Republic, how self-serving and cowardly the Senators are. Finn’s argument that only a strong central leadership backed up with credible threats of force can make the galaxy governable resonates in particular with Ben. This will be the start of Ben’s own fall as he is increasingly consumed with the thought that only he can right the ship of the galactic state.

Meanwhile Rey finds latent memories coming back from snatches of Finn’s conversation and the way he fights. Could he hold the key to finding her family? Was she a stolen child soldier like he was? She also respects Finn, and he her, for their respective skills. She doesn’t have a bone to pick in this fight and there’s no personal enmity between them. She thinks she might have liked him if he weren’t a brainwashed stiff. Scratch that, maybe she likes him nonetheless. Their interactions are increasingly filled with banter and borderline flirting.

At the end of it all Poe’s party bring the information and the prisoners to Republic space, but it is too late–the Mandalorians have invaded Republic space. They have decided that if the Republic will not keep the order they will do it themselves. Leia calls for a measured response, but the Senate quickly overrules her and actually issues a vote of no-confidence, then arrests her as a Mandalorian collaborator and would-be dictator. The situation escalates to war and Ben seethes at what happened to his mother. He runs off to rescue Leia and enlists Poe’s help. The Republic military takes in Finn and his crew and brutalize one of them when they resist, showing that Finn is in danger of much worse treatment than he was with Poe. Rey sneaks after Finn’s prisoner transport, unwilling to lose this possible lead to her family. End first movie.
