We are the spark that will light the fire that will burn the First Order down.
Okay I fucking get it now. If there’s the least hint that a Black character is the tiniest bit maladjusted after a lifetime of trauma and abuse he is a dangerous, scary stalker and abuser. It doesn’t matter that this “hint” comes from a highly unreliable narrator who herself thought nothing of assaulting and belittling this character. Anything that paints him in a frightening light and discredits him as a romantic lead will do, no matter how flimsy.
Meanwhile, a white male character can canonically and repeatedly commit crimes like mass murder, torture, and genocide, he can canonically on screen violate and mistreat a female character physically and mentally and he’s just an immature kid, a mentally ill abuse victim, and above all the romantic hero no matter what.
I get it now. Black characters have to be perfect in every way in order not to be demonized (but if they’re perfect they’re also boring!) while white characters can commit crime after crime and they’re still soft cinnamon rolls who just need a hug. The racism and double standards would be hilarious if they weren’t so galling.
Again, thanks to @alinaballerinadoll for helping me pick out the best styles for John. To be clear, she did help me pick out these styles but okayed only the second and third styles on the final manips, so any blame for the first one falls on me.
Imagined longer hairstyles for Finn/John Boyega. Many thanks to @alinaballeriniadoll for helping me pick out the styles!
Finn is not your uwu soft boy cinnamon roll. Being deeply compassionate doesn’t make him an enormous, useless, buffoonish sap. And frankly this whole idea of Finn being this pure, soft, naïve baby robs him of his character. When people treat Finn like he’s a mindless little good boy it degrades the significance of Finn’s decision to leave the FO by treating it like it wasn’t a decision. It presents Finn as though his defection wasn’t a choice, like it would inevitably happen because hes uwuwuwu such a cinnamon roll.
Finn is intelligent, rational, tactical, and pragmatic. He has a brilliant mind and is incredibly skilled. He was in the top 1% in all tests out of all stormtroopers in the FO. His decisions are calculated and he develops plans quickly and effectively. He was Phasma’s first choice for promotion to the rank of officer. The only reason he wasn’t promoted was because he regularly made compassionate and merciful decisions in combat simulations.
He understands politics on both a micro and a macro scale. He knows what his best interests are and how to achieve them. He knows how to pursue his own unique, individual desires and concerns. And yet he STILL chose not to kill, to defect. Finn could have easily worked his way up the FO power ladder and gotten himself a position of prestige and privilege. Yet he chose to leave it all behind and run head-first into a galaxy he barely knew, knowing he would have nothing except his wits and physical abilities to cling to.
Finn isn’t a great character because he’s a precious little dopey uwuwuwuwuwuwu soft boy who was destined to defect because of his “nature”, Finn is a great character because he’s brilliant and capable and could have had everything, but he chose leave it all behind at immense personal risk because he knew it was wrong. Stop making Finn into a sappy dunce and degrading his agency, especially in order to justify or uplift a ship.
The Wheel of Fortune suggests that you should not simply stand still and accept what life hands you. You can take an active hand to try and remain on the upside of the Wheel.
This ended up taking a lot longer than my first one but its finally here! there are a lot of characters this card could fit but finn popped into my mind first. Once again shamelessly copying the aesthetics of the rider-waite card, sans the original symbolism.
Reblog if you think Finn deserves to find his family, surname, and heritage after 20 years of being an oppressed child soldier
Everyone, including myself at times overlooks the fact that Finn had it the worst than everyone else and still draws the short straw in universe and out
Finn grew up with no family and was thrown into a child soldier program
Finn didn’t even have a name till he was given one as an adult
Finn was raised to kill
Finn was at best a weapon and at worst a slave
Finn wasn’t allowed any individuality
Rey, Kylo Ren, Poe, Hux, Phasmsa, Luke, Leia, Han, Finn has had it worse than anyone and after he manages to escape and DOES help blow up the super weapon he just wants to be free of war and death and live a somewhat peaceful life:
He’s called a coward and tazard by Rose
Forced into another mission he doesn’t really want to do
Lectured on how he doesn’t understand suffering and needs to stop being so selfish
And finally when there is a chance for him to find even a little peace in saving his friends at the cost of his life but at last be done with fighting, he’s denied even that and told he was wrong again.
Finn’s life is made up and defined by his lack of choices, being controlled by others, and sacrificing what he wants or what’s good for himself for others. Even in the fandom.
But no, let’s just keep portraying him as a cinnamon roll who is defined by who’s last name he gets to take. He’s a happy, seeet boy with no worries.
He’s a grown ass man who’s lives through hell.
I personally ship Finnrey, but I’d be just as happy if instead of ending up with anyone, Finn finds his family.
Maybe he was a child stolen from Jakku and since it’s clear from Rey the universe doesn’t care about Jakku, no one ever asked where he went. Plus the irony of Finn being from Jakku would be Rey and Poe both giving Finn a knowing shit eating grin that he’s from the planet he constantly talks shit about.
Maybe Finn is a Mandalorion and has a family in Sabine Wren. Because why not? Rey can be everything from a Skywalker, to a Kenobi, Emperor’s grandaughter, but Finn, an elite soldier with a natural gift for fighting and adapting to any situation can’t be from a civilization of warrior?
Maybe Finn is related to Windu, or Lando, or maybe he’s royalty and is actually a prince. Maybe he’s just some kid stolen from a simple family who miss him.
Regardless, Finn deserves his OWN story arc, family, and happy ending.
