@diversehighfantasy I’m really curious as to your thoughts on this. The comments of this round table are exactly why I and others have said that Finn needed a better story in TLJ.

So because racist fandom is racist, Finn was pointless in tlj?

I’ve been in a lot of fandoms with Black characters, and in every one, fans froth at the mouth with glee over.the thought of those characters dying. Every time, regardless of how they’re written. This is not something that is exclusive to tlj, not by a long shot.

Of course I think it’s shitty. I also think taking the responsibility away from the fandom for thinking Finn should have died because Luke force ghosted like Obi Wan and Yoda is shitty. These fans are mad that a white character made a sacrifice instead of a Black character. Because they consider Luke more valuable than Finn, even though Luke is now in the Obi Wan/Yoda place where he becomes one with the force.

If I blamed the narrative every time a fandom thought a Black character should die and renounced the movie or show because of it, I’d have zero fandoms.

in a way i’m glad they didn’t include that phasma moment, because while she would indeed look like a badass, finn would look a bit cheap using her as the selling point as to why the stormtroopers would need to rebel. they should’ve gone the route where the stormtroopers are all in awe of finn because he defected and came back to finish the job. in any case finn should be the one coming out of it looking like the true essence of the light side. ryan kyloson is just an awful writer.

I agree it’s not ideal, but it would also have been the whole lot more than the final cut of the movie gave us about a possible Stormtrooper uprising. I like your idea a whole lot better. And you’ll get no argument from me about Ryan Craig being awful.

Another thing I don’t get, why do people hate Finn and Poe so much? Especially Poe? I don’t get it TBH, they’re both amazing characters and heroes.

Finn defected from the FO and went back into the heart of their base/ship TWICE. After vowing he would never go back and kill for them.

Poe destroyed Starkiller and got the map from Tekka in the first place, he just wants the galaxy safe from those who seek to subjugate it. (Also, I’d like to note, Poe had every right to ask and question Holdo what their next move was, and she didn’t need to treat him with the absolute derision that dripped from her voice when she spoke to him. Unless there was a spy that they were worried about, what other reason could there have been for keeping it on the DL? He would have understood and followed her orders and Rose and Finn wouldn’t have had to go on a wild goose chase for half the movie.)

It’s possible Holdo’s failure to communicate was just that, a failure, but from your and others’ reactions it evidently wasn’t made that clear in the narrative that she was in the wrong. What irks me is that Holdo is considered this ~feminist icon~ who put Poe ~in his place~. Also she called Finn a “Stormtrooper” so bitch is dead to me.

Just read an article wherein the author (a man, probably straight) claimed that “everyone is in love with Rey.” I legit read it twice and wondered if that was a typo. Cause it’s pretty obvious that everyone is in love with Finn?? Like, way obvious. He gets a kiss from Rose, jealous looks and a warm fuzzy hug from Rey, and when Poe hears he’s awake and walking around naked he practically cartwheels out of his x-wing.

Just HOW do you come away from that thinking everyone is in love with REY? Yeah, Finn, obviously, has a thing for her. And….? AND….? I legit don’t know who else.

OH ANOTHER THING that scene where poe tells holdo that he sent finn and rose out on their mission and she says something like “you sent a stormtrooper?”……how fucking evil for her to casually refer to finn as a stormtrooper, as if he didn’t just risk his entire life multiple times to escape the first order and save the resistance! amilyn holdo retire bitch!!
