Stormtrooper Rebellion Confirmed?

A popular theory about what Finn’s arc in TLJ will be, involves him freeing reconditioned Stormtroopers and starting a rebellion against the First Order from within. With the further benefit that if the Resistance can permanently disable or find a way of easily circumvent the reconditioning process they’d have dealt a strong blow to how the First Order maintain complete loyalty among its trooper and officers.

This idea that is based among other things on Finn and Rose going undercover, the knowledge that we’re going to be encountering at least one Executioner Trooper – a branch who’s sole task it is to hunt down disloyal members with the First Order and take care of them – and us seeing him fighting Phasma while Stormtroopers seems to be aiding him, rather than fighting against him.

And in the btw video released today the theory may have got additional confirmation.

If my theory that reconditioning is literally a procedure that turns the subject into a human droid – such as Terex is in the Poe Dameron comic – then the best way to foil such a thing would be with a slicer (the in universe word for a hacker). And a slicer is exactly what Finn and Rose originally goes hunting for and find, embodied in Benicio Del Toro’s mysterious character DJ.

Here is where the btw video gets interesting.

We see a very brief scene of a determined Finn walking down a large hallway. Rose is behind him in the right side of the screen.

And to the left?

Benicio Del Toro.

So, DJ is with them when they get to the FO base or Star Destroyer.

Now there’s a lot of reasons to get a slicer and bring him into an First Order base. Such as getting codes or critical intel, or just wreck general havoc with their systems.

So was the idea to use DJ’s skills to free reconditioned troops the original idea? Or is this Finn’s own plan? And if DJ is as self serving as Benicio has been claiming, how did Finn and Rose talk him into coming along? Does Rose’ tragic past play into it, one she might share with DJ? Or is there a glimmer of altruistic good in DJ under the cynicism?

@diversehighfantasy @lj-writes You have been two of the main proponents of this theory, so thoughts? Ideas? Comments

I love it! My only thing is, I want to see troopers rebel because Finn inspired them. It could go both ways, though: there could be the rebel troopers, and the “loyal” troopers who DJ might be able to help.

I really expected DJ to be in like one scene on Canto Bight, so I’m like “wut?” rn. But YES, the uprising was supported by the trailer, and it’s supported by this! Maybe not confirmed, but my hope for an amazing Finn story has been renewed.

That brings to mind another speculation! If the reconditioned Troopers are programmable, not only could the program be broken–maybe it could also be turned so that they become mindless automata for the Resistance instead. Maybe that’s what at least a faction of the Resistance brass want. But Finn is like “fuck that” and orders DJ to break the reconditioning and give the troopers a choice–even if the choice is to walk away from the fight or to kill the intruders.

It would be really interesting if this is something Finn comes up with himself. Remember my earlier speculations about the Resistance brass possibly ignoring the Stormtrooper uprising as impossible and too risky? Well what if the DJ mission were originally for the usual espionage uses–getting a command code and whatnot–but Rose discovers a new application to breaking Stormtrooper reconditioning? And DJ agrees to help, because he sees in Finn’s passion and Rose’s brilliance something he can believe in again, or at least a change of pace?

jakkus-storyteller:

There is just WAY too much focus on making Finn a comedic sidekick and this caused viewers to forget or flat out not acknowledge Finn’s awesome backstory and capability in the Force Awakens novel.

After watching Forces Of Destiny: Tracker Trouble, I was really put off at how Finn was written. Finn was raised within the confines of the First Order, under the the watchful eye of Captain Phasma herself…he would never just snatch something suspicious off the wall and it’s just so ridiculously out of character. Finn is not a bumbling idiot and him being dumbed down to prop up Rey is just gross.

This is a problem I have with a lot of the storytelling in FoD, with characters, generally non-human ones, being intentionally portrayed as helpless as a quick way to help the leads shine. If it’s a random passerby or child, fine, at least there’s story justification, but this plot device gets noticeably clunky when someone like Chewie gets damselled. Given the nexus between non-human characters and people of color in media maybe it’s not surprising that Finn would be the first human male to get this treatment, but yeah, it sucked.

skispeederfinn replied to your post “It’s a little past midnight and all I can think about is Finn laughing…”

finn grew up on a planet that rains a LOT, which of course he doesnt remember (though he learns again once he’s reunited with his family) and so when he feels warm rain on his skin for the first time, its not a memory, per se, but theres something both deliciously new and wonderfully familiar about it, at the same time, and he just stands there at first, arms outstretched and grinning wide up at the sky, because who knew anything could feel that amazing?

YES!!!

#It brings with it so many sensations and feelings that Finn can barely even understand let alone describe.#Time sort of stops for him while he’s under that rain fall slipping down his body like the rain drops and Finn feels himself#relax in a way he never had before#(although it feels like he has? Some distant part of him tugging at his chest and quietly telling him to see).#The smell of fresh rainfall calms him soothes nerves Finn hadn’t even realized were frayed#mends certain parts of himself that he’d thought were long lost.#he part of him that whispers he’d been a child once had a family and a life before everything feel around his ears and#he’d been dragged away to a place of darkness and despair. But now as he stands there underneath the dark clouds#and the distant sounds of thunder Finn feels at peace. But also not?#It’s not a bad feeling persay but there’s a sort of anticipation that lines his body. Something on the tip of his tongue that begs him to#speak and remember things that happened long ago. It’s as though he’s standing at a crossroads.#The child he’d been before.#Before the First Order and before defecting and the person he is now. And it’s exciting and terrifying and Finn is#both elated and troubled and so much happens under that rainfall as though#the Force itself was trying to get him to see. (via @bifinnskywalker)
