It’s what all Finn stans need. Tbh it wouldn’t hurt that I’d be able to search for him without getting Adventure Time or The 100.
@jewishcomeradebot I would die if his birth name were Sam or, though highly unlikely, Moses. A last name, which we would probably get if we get his birth name, would still make him much easier to search anyway. I like the sound of Sam Skywalker!
The truly sad thing is, Finn spending TLJ in a coma could actually have been brilliant–but ONLY IF it the story had taken care to involve and center him. Obviously not in the way RJ described it in his tasteless joke, with Finn being inert and unimportant while only getting occasional cuts of him stirring in his sleep. That’s not just bad, that’s positively malicious (as much of the movie was tbh). But if the plot had involved Finn heavily, and the coma had been used as an actual opportunity to explore his story and the setting? In that case it would have been better than what we got in TLJ.
Consider: Finn is so seriously injured that he doesn’t wake for most of the movie’s runtime, and due to the haphazard circumstances of the evacuation the Resistance were not able to bring all the necessary equipment and medicine. On top of that they are under constant bombardment and the infirmary is flooded with patients, further complicating his recovery. This would emphasize the gravity of what Kylo Ren did to Finn while showing that the First Order is a direct threat to Finn as well as the Resistance as a whole.
Snoke berates Kylo not only for losing to Rey and being so conflicted over murdering Han Solo, but also for failing to kill Finn. Hux and Snoke are both extremely threatened by Finn’s defection, and Phasma reports unrest in the ranks for which she executed and reconditioned a number of troopers. Snoke makes it clear that he is chasing the Resistance’s main fleet so doggedly in large part because he wants to make sure Finn is dead, or better yet, to drag him before the assembled troopers and make an example of him. This further establishes the FO’s evil and heightens the sense of suspense because Finn is a character that the audience actually cares about, not a nameless extra like many of the Resistance members we saw die on screen.
Rey is worried about Finn and keeps trying to contact the Resistance. When the Force Skype happens she is angry with Kylo over Finn’s injury as well as Han’s murder. Kylo manipulates her in large part by telling her about the Resistance’s plight and the personal danger to Finn–and he insinuates, or lets her believe, that he would let the Resistance go and spare Finn’s life.
We continue the bond between Finn and Poe by having Poe go on the Canto Bight mission (or some better mission that makes more sense, getting help from Lando?), and Rose going with him because she is deeply affected by Finn’s heroism.
Most crucially, however, Finn’s coma is not just about him lying there but is an exploration of his past and trauma, even his connection with the Force. We see some of the Before the Awakening materials where he is an elite cadet whose only flaw is too much empathy. We get to see his relationship with a living Slip, his other squadmates, and Phasma. (Give Phasma more to do, you cowards.) This would parallel and contrast the exploration of Kylo’s past, continuing the foil relationship. Finn was already a cadet when Kylo Ren formally joined the FO, and this
intersection in their stories would have been interesting to explore.
We see glimpses of Finn’s traumatic kidnapping as a child, something that distresses him so much that it registers on the medical monitors. Finn also relives the massacre of Hosnia and many other things he wasn’t physically present for, including present events, though he is only able to affect things in small snatches such as shouting a warning to Poe at a crucial moment which Poe actually hears.
Finally, on Crait, Finn’s Force projection grows strong enough that he helps provide the crucial clue for getting out of the mines, and he leads Rey to the back entrance. Even Chewie sees him by this point and roars out a greeting. She is overjoyed at the connection with Finn and is happy and confident when she lifts the rocks, in direct contrast to her tension and sadness when talking to Kylo.
Finn finally wakes, Sleeping Beauty style, on the Millennium Falcon with Rey by his side and stroking his hand. They have a joyful reunion and everyone on board celebrates this flash of hope among the darkness, making the hopeful ending seem actually deserved.
Lesson: You can keep a character in a coma for a whole movie and still advance his story as long as you give half a shit about him. It’s telling that RJ’s treatment of Finn was so reluctant and half-assed that it was fully possible to tell a better story based on a throwaway joke of an idea.
I like the idea of Finn, his decision to defect, and his survival being a focal point for all groups involved. But I don’t think Finn needs to be comatose for it to happen.
And to be honest, although the story would elevate his importance, leaving him comatose would still be awful. Even though the plot would be more “about” him, Finn would be mostly a passive prop for most of the film, until he begins using the Force.
The problem with RJ wanting to leave Finn in a coma is that he doesn’t participate in his own story. More than that, he doesn’t get a story. Leaving Finn comatose keeps him relegated to a certain area, away from most of the action, unable to make decisions, unable to show off all his skills.
Although he would technically get a story in the scenario you’ve described, he would mostly be a passive prop. His most active parts would require other characters in order to happen, so he wouldn’t really have any time that was his own, other than flashbacks and dreams.
Since Star Wars is so action-centered, I think removing any character from the action, no matter how vital they are to moving the plot forward, is a downgrade for that character. I really don’t think there’s any scenario where leaving Finn in a coma for most/all of TLJ would work.
It’s not so much “Finn should have been in a coma” as “Finn’s story in TLJ was so bad that even keeping him in a coma could have made for a better story.” As in, a comparison of two terrible ideas–Finn in a coma the whole movie, and what RJ did–and showing that what TLJ did with Finn was even worse than the terrible joke of keeping him in a coma. Obviously giving him a decent action plot AND in-world importance is the best case scenario, but the point wasn’t to compare Finn’s TLJ plot to a good idea but to a really bad one.
I’m not even that big of a fan of Harry Potter, but I liked your post so much I drew up these. Young Rey on the streets and Young Finn as a Death Eater.
Easter Eggs
-Unkar Plutt becomes Uncle Plutt, the Troll crimeboss.
-Rey is in Knockturn Alley, but she thinks she has no magic, and is thus highly loyal to Plutt.
-Finn’s adoptive brother Slip dies in his arms shortly before his first day at Hogwarts.
-Finn’s Death Eater mask is based off from the First Order stormtrooper helmet.
At Walmart last night and found these adorable cards!! And not a single one with Kylo (;
These all look like cute, upbeat cards, and it looks like Kylo would be distinctly out of place here. Almost like he’s not a hero or something! Bonus points for Finn and Rey being directly associated with the Millenium Falcon, reylow bellyaching to the contrary 😂
I’m having a hard time checking out this claim because there are so many different outlets and categories that I hardly know where to start. But if true, it’s disturbing.
I think it’s incredibly difficult to give a definitive answer to that claim. I’m not saying it isn’t true, it very well could be but to actually discuss this matter, we’d somehow have to get our hands on a list of merchandise items divided by characters or make one ourselves, truly digging it up by hand. I’d be very interested in the result and maybe also would like to see which type of merch features Finn and which type rather features Poe. Or truly check this for all characters.Sadly I fear this would take ages and I don’t think anyone has the time to do this. (or maybe we all don’t even have the resources)
When I reviewed the merchandise that Disney sells online and at there parks Poe technically has more merchandise than Finn. I say technically because the merchandise isn’t Poe himself but his ship and outfit that’s really just a regular resistance pilot suit with his name thrown on it. Even with these added items it’s not that much more versus say captain phasma. Who gets way more merchandise but that’s mainly because people like her design.
Poe no matter how much some people want or may worry isn’t going to outshine Finn in the merchandise or the film department. Also just checked out Walmart’s website and Finn merchandise outweighs Poe. An agian just like on the Disney’s sight a lot of Poe merchandise is ships and resistance gear. While I may not like how Disney treats Finn he’s doing very good outside the parks which is better when you really think about it.
i ran out of space in the last anon but yeah, my point basically
is that finn had a lot of screentime in [tfa] because he was with another
lead (rey), rian alienated him in tlj so he had less screentime but the
screentime was all about his character for better or for worse, and in 9
we’ll see him go back to tfa amounts if not more.
That’s something else that bothers me about TLJ, though, because Finn is at least as much Kylo Ren’s foil as Rey is and should have been more involved in the plot with KR. There was nothing inevitable about Finn getting less time with other leads and less screen time in addition to the crappy and pointless retread of his arc from the prior movie.
RJ himself said he cut a lot of Finn’s scenes because they were more plotty and therefore disposable, and again, there was nothing about Finn’s character or the story that dictated that Finn get the plotty and less-important scenes that subsequently ended up on the cutting room floor.
This anon is quite simply writing nonsense. Rey’s screentime did not double. Rey’s screentime got LESS, significantly, compared to TFA, and Finn’s screentime was cut in half compared to his screentime in TFA. Rey lost approx. 13 minutes, Finn lost almost 20 minutes. Just in case: Rey, IN TFA, was with the OTHER LEAD, WHO WAS FINN!. Kylo Ren’s screentime didn’t even get significantly bigger compared to TFA but this time it was used to let him ramble his BS, when during most of TFA he was a horror in a mask. Rey’s or Finn’s screentime should not depend on who they are with, they are lead characters whose screentime should be planned in advance and it should be essential that their screentime is important and that the story revolves around them! Then doing what RJ did to Finn would be IMPOSSIBLE! I mean I could also argue Rey’s screentime just exists so that we can hear Kylo whine and Luke being an ass bc nothing much else fucking happens. Finn’s screentime wasn’t connected to RJ’s only real idea for TLJ, so it could just be cut. Also please tell me how space horses and naked butt aliens and boring shit people went to the LOO for bc they couldn’t take it anymore was all about Finn. He learned NOTHING he didn’t already know in TFA! This nonsense was straight up filler material! and RJ CUT scenes that could’ve deepened his character development and story bc he somehow believed they didn’t matter!!!!!!
So again: Finn’s screentime does not depend on who he is with. His screentime should stand on its OWN bc he is IMPORTANT. Fucking hell, I can’t handle this BULLSHIT
