This is exactly why simply casting women and people of
color isn’t good enough, they have to be given meaningful stories and
roles. Gwendoline Christie did great with the limited material she was
given, but she would truly have soared if she had had something
substantive to work with. Is it still meaningful that there was a named
female villain in Star Wars? Yes, but it would have been awesome if she
had had more of a role within the story. Increasing her stature would
have made for a correspondingly more substantive role for Finn, too,
because she and Finn have a fraught history and overcoming her could
have been a pivotal moment for Finn. The wasted potential on both these
characters’ parts makes me so mad.
I’m keeping my expectations low, personally. Abrams was an executive producer for TLJ, it’s not like he had no say. I’m ready to live forever in TFA-verse and various fan AUs if it comes to it.
To be fair EP is sometimes a meaningless title.
Usually they aren’t the ones making the decisions or doing that much.
Stan Lee is an EP for Marvel movies he has very little involvement. And
Christopher Nolan was the EP of Batman Vs. Superman and The Justice
League god knows he didn’t approve of that.
True, sometimes it seems more of an honorary title than anything. And if JJ had had actual decisionmaking power he presumably would have done something about the blatant contradictions of TFA, if nothing else. Remember when we tried to tell ourselves TLJ couldn’t be too bad because JJ was EP? Good times.
Hm, isn’t fucking facist murderers with a grandpa complex everybody’s kink?
We can’t all be German, porgs.
Oh, damn, you mean Germany lost the war and Star Wars isn’t about how awesome the Empire and the FO are? I’m speechless now, my life’s a lie! (I’m joking btw, in case someone doesn’t know omg! I don’t think I can joke about this??? Anyway I think you can @lj-writes ?? )
Ikr, how could a trilogy started off by a Jewish director and penned by Jewish writers NOT glorify an explicit Nazi analogue? It boggles the mind… (idk my other German friends did make the occasional “Germany lost the war” jokes no idea if it’s ok for me lol)
You know, if we’re going to be getting canon Finnrey I’m almost relieved they’ll spend most of 8 apart and the bulk of their interactions will be in 9, now that JJ is coming back. Nothing Rian has said gave me confidence that he’d treat the relationship right. I’d much rather have JJ, who gave us the interactions that imploded our hearts, wrap things up.
This entire “everything shifts to the opposite the audience expects” stuff goes on my nerves SO much, I’m sorry. The audience has certain expectations for a REASON. And shifting EVERYTHING becomes unrealistic and unsatisfying at a point. That doesn’t sound exciting to me… it just sounds like a mess. Sorry.
Me too, but “is being shifted” doesn’t equate “will end up” in the opposite way. For an example, we assumed that Finn’s internal struggle about whether to stay in the fight was settled when he fought with the Resistance at the end of TFA, but we were already told that this conflict continues in early TLJ. We also know that the movies, or even TLJ, won’t end with Finn settling in the Outer Rim. (Unless he was battling Phasma for a ticket?) So I’m okay with expectations being subverted in the middle as long as the buildup in TFA isn’t negated.
Besiiiides… guess who’s directing the final movie of the trilogyyyyy 🎶
I know JJ isn’t everyone’s favourite but I’m pretty relieved he’s taking over Ep 9. This idea of every film having a different director and writer always seemed idiotic to me. Having the guy who set everyinhg in motion wrap everything up makes sense to me.
JJ championed John Boyega, gave us Finn, Rey and Finn’s dynamic, made Rey Luke’s daughter and set up Finn to be Force sensitive. And since it’s the final film he can’t inflict more mystery box crap on us.
I’m pretty hopeful about the ST right now.
“Relieved” exactly describes my reaction, too. Look, I don’t expect a cinematic masterpiece. I’m sure I’ll find plenty to be annoyed with in JJ’s Episode IX. It could even be a piece of shit, but at least it won’t be a fascist-glorifying piece of shit. I also have a lot more hope for Finn, Rey, and Poe getting their due than have under any other director (e.g. Rian Johnson). To me the ST is JJ’s vision and I’m happy that he’ll be the one to close it out.
listen… i don’t think it means force-sensitive Finn is “debunked” or whatever. maybe they’ll explore that in ep 9. but that’s what i was worried about when they said that each movie is kind of a stand-alone in terms of screenplay. there’s no freaking continuity. JJ had set up FS Finn but Rian doesn’t want to talk about that in ep 8 so he fucking doesnt. and if jurassic guy decides it doesn’t interest him either….
i’m mad, how can you set up a trilogy without any guarantee of continuity ? that’s not how it works. there are some major aspects of the main characters that are supposed to be explored and developed.
And then they ditch Jurassic Misogynist and bring JJ back for Ep IX….

Reylos mocking fans who are glad JJ is coming back for IX because of how he handled the neo-Nazi-parallel FO.
Funny how I . a nasty ant – am the one who’s always pointing out that JJ is Jewish. JJ isn’t Jewish when I need him to be, he’s always Jewish including when I don’t like him much or disagree with him. I’ve never claimed JJ as anything but a Jewish man, though a very white passing one. That’s why I occasionally call him white-ish, because the complexity between Jewishness and whiteness is not easily explicable and I don’t want to derail a discussion, and white-ish usually suffices so I go with it. And frankly, I will fight anyone, Anti or not, who dismisses JJ’s Jewishness. I am beyond tired of seeing any Jewish person’s Jewishness erased so I absolutely will fight people over it.
does anyone wanna explain how jj being the director for the next movie makes rey/o canon?
IM SO GLAD YOU ASKED
First of all, #reylogic makes sense when you completely turn off your brain and guzzle down a pint.
Let’s begin: reylos claim to see “signals” and “messages” in TFA that are foreshadowing reylo being canon. The monstercarry between Rey and Kylo and the torture scene are considered romantic to them. As a result of them believing in these hidden messages and this “plot twist” romance in the works, they automatically believe that the main force behind this movie made it so, and therefore, is planning a reylo endgame. Of course, the director JJ Abrams
Despite the fact that JJ Abrams is a Jewish man who modeled FO after Nazis and made Kylo Ren a perfect Tumblr punching bag for people who hate white fuckboys, Reylos are convinced that JJ is secretly a reylo like them
So there you have it! Why reylos think JJ being the director means reylo endgame!
^^^^all this, also JJ called the torture scene, well, a torture scene multiple times. Plus a big part of the canon Maylo belief system is that Finn will eventually be sidelined in favor of Kylo (and should “get his own movie like Qui-Gon” baaaaaarf), and considering that this wasn’t how JJ rolled at all and he’s the one who gave us Force-sensitive protagonist Finn, well. Ryelors are smoking the good shit, as usual.
