The post literally had Finn in it. Did your eyes glaze over when his name came up? I’ll delete my addition if op thinks I was derailing, but in my mind I was confirming and expanding on the original point.
This originally started out as a reblog @thelastjedicritical reblog about continuity and it evolved into this.
I’ve been thinking a lot about if JJ will softly retcon TLJ’s consequences, or what little and few consequences it had.
Considering Force projection have now been brought into the new canon, force teleportation for Luke’s survival and Souls transferring or surviving after the body was destroyed for Snoke’s survival isn’t that far fetched. Both powers existed during the Old Republic era and could be brought into the new canon like how RJ pulled force projection from an old, out of date Legends force power book.
It all just depends on where JJ and Star Wars is going to go after IX.
If IX truly is the ending of everything, then Luke, or at least Snoke, should stay dead. If Star Wars is going to be like the old EU and the MCU, and start telling stand alone stories more, than bringing Luke back as the Grand Jedi Master and Snoke back as a Lager Scope Villain would be a good idea for the series as a whole.
Luke could become the big good of the franchise and stay on Coruscant helping serve the New Republic, which Leia would be named the Chancellor of, while he also rebuilds the New Jedi Order. That way both Luke and Leia can remain in the story, while not getting involved with the many adventures to come in Star Wars outside of cameos and novels. Beyond that, unless where doing a 10 year time skip, Rey isn’t nearly as strong or even knowledgeable about the politics of the galaxy or Jedi to start a new order. I mean there always Ahsoka too…cough, cough.
Even if you agree with Snoke’s death, no one can argue the fact that he was an intimidating villain who seemed a lot stronger than any other character we’ve seen. He could be like the Thanos of Star Wars. Darth Neggings/Benny Boy, and even Hux work as an Antagonists, but not greater scope villains. Snoke did.
I know some would disagree with me, but turning the Star Wars saga into stand alone movies like Marvel would be a better move on the chessboard. We already have Rogue One and there’s a Boba Fett movie coming. I think an anthology series approach would serve Lucasfilms and the fans better.
A Knights of Ren movie with Kylo.
A Mandalorian movie with Finn.
A Black Squadron movie with Poe.
A Jedi Order movie with Rey.
Other standalone movies set in different eras Like an Ahsoka movie, Clone Commandos, Kotor. Then they can all converge in bigger movies together like the Avengers.
I think a major problem Lucasfilms is having with these new movies is that they are trying to emulate the old trilogies formats while also trying to do new stuff like Marvel, and it’s not working.
Just ditch the trilogy format all together and start focusing on the characters and their stories.
If marvel can take a bunch of B rank comic book heroes that only comic fans knew about and turn them into literal box office juggernaut hits and beloved characters, than Lucasfilms can do it for Star Wars.
Sharing screen time like the way they have been doing it guarantees that all these characters will never actually get the character development they deserve without one of them taking it from another. The Dark Knight, Winter Soldier, Logan, Black Panther, they had such great character development for their characters because there wasn’t a million characters to focus on.
In TLJ we had to follow Rey, Finn, Kylo, and Poe, and all of their character arcs. Then there were characters underdeveloped like Rose, Holdo, Luke, Leia, Snoke, Hux, and Phasma. As well as characters completely ignored or not even present like Ackbar, Chewie, R2, Lando, Wedge and the Knights of Ren. And finally we had plot threads entirely dropped like Finn’s origins, Rey’s parents, Snoke’s backstory, Poe’s father and his insecurities, Leia’s family relationships, Luke’s 30 year history since ROTJ, Hux’s relationship with Rae Sloane and his father, Rae Sloane herself, Phasma’s corrupt dealings, the New Republic politics and First Order’s history of what actually happened in the unknown regions of space.
If anyone thinks we’re gonna get all of this settled in one movie, then that shit is either going to be 8 hours long or your high off death sticks.
Lucasfilms should ditch the trilogy format, end this whole Skywalker format and just start making stand-alone movies like Marvel and DC, just please no Joss Whedon.
Lucasfilms is already trying to subtly be like Marvel anyway, spinoffs planned, multiple new projects being produced by different directors… All I’m suggesting is that they drop the formalities and just started doing standalone movies now.
The Anthology approach for marvel isn’t just working either, it’s getting better. Their Movies have gone from all being copy and past generic movies to films to Hiest movies, war movies, action comedy movies, westerners, horror, and dramatic family epics. Meanwhile Star Wars is still trying to copy a format that ended with Revenge of the Sith.
Move on and start evolving. No good ever came from trying to copy the past. Good only comes when we learn and improve from the past.
I mean does anyone seriously believe Disney will stop milking the Star Wars money as long as it can make money?
They’ll ride this train till it burns beyond recognition. So the least they can do is rebrand it so it starts making more money than comic book movies. Back in 2016 Star Wars was king, now they’re just that tired old franchise with 2 racists (Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy) screwing things up.
Yeah the trilogy format has run its course and clearly it’s not what LF is actually doing. This isn’t George Lucas’s show anymore, for better and for worse, they need to do what they need for this new canon–and for those sweet profits, of course.
One fly (two flies?) in this ointment is that two of the biggest stars in the franchise, John and Daisy, have stated they won’t be returning after IX. They went as close to setting it in stone as anything can get in show biz, which I grant you isn’t that final and could be a negotiating tactic. It could also be, though, that these up and coming actors don’t want to be tied to the brand too strongly, especially given its current chaotic management. Either way LF will have to make the deal pretty sweet and run a HECK of a tighter ship if it wants to keep them for future projects and get anywhere near Marvel’s level.
That’s essentially what I’m saying. The movie pitch ideas I was giving are just general ones. I really doubt John and Daisy will stay after the next movie if things don’t change and they don’t actually get treated with respect, but at this point LS has already tarnished their image. Sure some people will go see the movies if they keep making it, but if Solo is anything to learn from, you can’t keep making half assed movies and expect people to pay to see them.
@lj-writes do you have anyone in mind who could actually run this company over KK? A lot of people say Dave Filoni, but I’m against someone who is never around the movie studio before in their life, and other reasons, being in charge.
I like Kiri Hart of the Story Group, who is rumored to be KK’s replacement. There are rumors that JJ was offered the position and refused it.
@yourfriendlyneighborhoodwraith Here’s one about TFA almost having an all-white cast due to LF’s cowardice racism (link). According to this report JJ was the only reason the cast had some diversity.
It is estimated that about 85% of the 30,000 or so Anglo-Saxon words
gradually died out under the cultural onslaught of the Vikings and the
Normans who would come after them, leaving a total of only around 4,500.
This represents less than 1% of modern English vocabulary,
I’m so fucked no wonder it was so hard to cut French and Latin-derived words out of my current project.
but it
includes some of the most fundamental and important words (e.g. man, wife, child, son, daughter, brother, friend, live, fight, make, use, love, like, look, drink, food, eat,
sleep, sing, sun, moon, earth, ground, wood, field, house, home, people, family, horse, fish, farm, water, time, eyes, ears, mouth, nose, strong, work, come, go, be, find, see, look, laughter, night, day, sun, first, many, one, two, other, some, what, when, which, where, word, etc), as well as the most important “function” words (e.g. to, for, but, and, at, in, on, from,
etc). Because of this, up to a half of everyday modern English will
typically be made up of Old English words, and, by some estimates, ALL
of the hundred most commonly-used words in modern English are of
Anglo-Saxon origin (although pronunciations and spellings may have
changed significantly over time).
*breathes a little more easily*
One thing I notice from my exercise is that I have lost most abstract words (”movement,” “animal,” “plant”) and have to be super specific (”flicker,” “horse,” “dogsbollocks” okay the last one is a translation from Korean but still). It’s definitely made me vocabulary-poor and a lot of the words that come to me at first turn out to be unusable, but on the other hand I’ve been forced to use more vivid images instead of falling back on vagueness. I assume I will run into much the same problems and solutions when I repeat this exercise for the Korean version in refraining from Chinese-derived words for most Korean characters.
Rey is not nothing # #she was never nothing #and she has so many people #that know and care for her
IS WHAT I AM SAYING
Kylo also hasn’t witnessed these relationships firsthand. All he’s really seen is her and Finn’s friendship.
The relationship between Kylo and Rey was defined in TLJ by Rey expressing her feelings of loneliness and confusion. He’s not really telling her “you’re nothing and no one cares for you” here so much as “I know you feel lonely and that your place in this story is defined by your family, and I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t matter that you come from nothing. We are kindred spirits.”
He literally told her she was nothing asdjkl if you have to rewrite his line to make it sound better then you’re not working off the canon, just your wishful thinking. RJ himself said he was trying to undermine her confidence and use her humble origins against her.
Like on one hand, these galaxy brain takes on trying to do the mental gymnastics to make Kylo Ren not abusive trash is kinda funny in an annoying way
But on the other hand? I am so scared for these people–particularly young women/girls who date men–who are taking these huge red flags for abuse and turning it into “he needs to be saved. Rey can fix him with her love” rhetoric
I’m not saying you shouldn’t like a character who’s a canon shitheel, but ignoring and willfully misinterpreting canon to the point of Discourse™ to woobiify them can have for real consequences for young folks getting into relationships
*Oda Mae Brown Voice* You in danger, girl!
(Pedophilia and child sexual abuse mention below)
You are very correct in your fear–in fact, here’s an article by a media academic and csa/incest survivor who discussed how her fandom friends’ romanticization of pedophilia and abuse discouraged her from leaving her abusive pedophile boyfriend.
