“The only thing I can do is be honest and be myself, and if people hate that, they’re gonna hate that, and I can’t control that. It has nothing to do with me. I’m saying this now, and it sounds really easy, but it took me a year. I just feel like I don’t wanna hide anymore. — Kelly Marie Tran
Rose taking comfort under fire in the fact that if she and Paige die, they die together
(Consider everything in the notes a potential spoiler)
Oh wow, this book has actual, proper grieving scenes for the characters’ losses in battle! Who’d have thought such a thing was possible? Everyone knows this is so hard, even billion-dollar grossing movies have characters grinning like idiots with no one ever shedding a tear after losing of most of their friends and comrades.
That said, who thought it was a good idea to go out and fly the exact same mission again when a TIE fighter had escaped in the previous battle and the enemy was ready for them? Without, say, a fighter escort to fight off the TIEs? If the Resistance couldn’t properly protect their supply ships they should have admitted they were overextended and declined to help any further, or deveoped a different method so the enemy wouldn’t see them coming. You can’t just send out your crew hoping for the best, ffs, especially when this mission was about giving aid to an outside group and was not vital to the Resistance’s work. There was no mention of Atterra being of particular strategic importance to dislodge the First Order.
If the Resistance were at all serious about Atterra, why not go to the Senate? By this point members of the Resistance had seen more than enough to testify before the Senate about the abuses in the Atterra system. Whatever happened to those spy droids in the opening mission? They must have gathered some evidence, as the Resistance who visited the planet must have. They had two real live Atterran witnesses right there!
And let’s say they didn’t go to the Republic because the Senate was willing to let the FO do whatever the fuck they liked in their own territory, blockade entire populations into dying of thirst, dissolve the bodies of their victims in the acid oceans. If so, the Resistance was violating its own mandate and potentially starting a war with the FO. It would have been better to fly humanitarian missions to evacuate the Atterrans instead, because there is no indication the Bravo Rising resistance group could hold territory and keep their supply lines open even if they defeated the FO.
Argh. I like the worldbuilding and character development in this book but the story makes no sense once you really look at it.
Rose thinking she’d rather blow herself and Paige up than let either of them be taken by the First Order
Also let it be known for the record that you have not lived until you have heard Loan Tran doing a British accent.
Translation: It can’t be a super-important scene if characters of color are central to the action and also I need to soothe my fear that my mass murdering patricidal fave is not in fact the male lead of the franchise.
This is also why the whole “we support Loan Tran” rings so freaking hollow from this crowd. Because guess who else isn’t in yesterday’s photos?
Yeah that would be Loan. Looks like Daisy isn’t there either. (It may or may not be her stunt double in the pics. It’s so damn grainy it’s impossible to tell, but it definitely isn’t Daisy.)
So while whatever is going on in the scene shot yesterday on that hillside, Rose and Rey might be off somewhere doing something together.
Which would not only mean that it just got increasingly likely that Rose will be more than a small, tangential role in IX. (I’m glad JJ included her and I see it as auspicious that he decided to do that at all, but I’ll remain worried about the treatment and plot significance of all the characters of color until I actually see the movie.) Furthermore it might mean we’ll get a Star Wars movie who not only passes the Bechdel test (which like half of them so far doesn’t do) but do so more than by the skin of its teeth (which is the rest of them).
But instead they go and make it about the white, genocidal Nazi I am unsurprised but this is why I can’t take the “we support Loan Tran” claim serious from most of that crowd. There might a few legit supporters among them, but the majority doesn’t give a flying fuck about Loan or any of the other actors of color, unless they can use them as support for their ship.
I’ll just say it now: even if TLJ had been a movie that the fandom adores and if Rose had been an overall popular character Kelly would’ve still been harassed on the internet. My proof? Well has everybody forgotten what happened to John and Daisy during the TFA era? Apparently so… and of course they won’t even admit this KEEPS happening to John on a daily basis …
A lot of these people didn’t harass Kelly bc of the movie or bc her character was badly written … some of these asshats might claim that to justify their shitty behaviour but we all know they would’ve done it regardless because their problem isn’t Rose Tico in particular or a bad movie that Kelly hasn’t freaking written … their problem is that she’s an Asian woman and this is what they let her know.
Admitting that rasicm and sexism is alive and well is something that the media doesn’t want the general public to realize. It’s much easier to pass it off as it’s the fans fault.
Though as we all learned by Solo, misblaiming your fan base is not a wise business move
This youtube channel called <the dishonoured wolf> literally called her “fat asian bitch” and this isnt even about her character but that ass narrator attacked Kelly’s actual physique. I was disgusted.
And you mean to say people who criticize the Rose Tico character can’t care about the actress? Wow you fail.
And here we are back where it started on here: people claiming that every person who dislikes the character harassed Kelly and that the harassment thus came because people dislike Rose/TLJ. Which in the end lead back to
“Those who dislike the movie are toxic haters” and not “we have to protect the actors from online harassment”
It’s fucking disgusting, conflating the problem of racist and misogynist hatred WOC face with disliking some fictional story/character. Yeah, I’m sure the harassment was due to not liking Rian Johnson’s writing and not because these asshats can’t stand the idea of an Asian woman daring to exist outside prescribed visuals and roles. Not liking the work or characters is the excuse these harassers frequently use, and reylows validate them to score a point.
