The author of the story, Kevin Kwan, reportedly felt pressure to whitewash his characters. EW writes that “during one early meeting with one potential producer who wanted to adapt the novel, Kwan says he was even asked to reimagine his protagonist as a white woman. “I was like, ‘Well, you’ve missed the point completely,’ ” he recalls. “I said, ‘No, thank you.’
”Ultimately, the movie may be about Asian people, but its themes are universal. [ Jon M.] Chu says that “it’s just such a beautiful story, to show an Asian-American immigrant going back to Asia and finding the things that overlap and connect us all, things like family, things like love.”
why does he NEED to defend his all ASIAN cast for a movie called crazy rich ASIANS. What idiot was like “ok I know it says asian but how about Scandinavians?”
Given they managed to whitewash a movie (Ghost in the Shell) in which all the characters were literally Japanese and the entire story took place in JAPAN???? I’m not surprised folks are actually asking about this lol
I hope they keep shaming those producers. Even without naming them publicly, just cultivating the understanding is a power move
People of color are expected to empathize with white characters in every medium. Hollywood doesn’t want to cast us, but they want our money. But man, put the shoe on the other foot-let the hero of a story be a Chinese woman? And they can’t manage.
well i think i have given up on white people for good… i was scrolling through the comments on the pacific rim uprising trailer and lo and behold!! a white person complained about how they were “tired of racial diversity” in movies and i’m like ????? how the fuck?????
THE FUCK?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!???!?!?
No but a lot of people honestly and seriously think diversity is a fad that will go away.
On the one hand: I can’t wait for finery to become canon and to give the loudest whoop of my life, and possibly burst into tears, as they have their epic onscreen kiss.
On the other hand: John got so much racist shit thrown his way just for being IN Star Wars. I don’t want to think about how much more he might have to endure if he kisses a white woman on screen. Daisy would get shit, too–the reactions to her Instagram postings are a good indicator–but the brunt of the rage will be focused on John and possibly JJ. Fortunately John has shown the fortitude to show grace and humor in the face of hatred, but he really shouldn’t have to.
If Supergirl season one is anything to use as a guideline, then yes. It
would be an ugly mess. Right now the worst of it is under wraps because
so many fans are pretending that there’s NO POSSIBLE WAY Finn and Rey
could be more than friends.
Thank you (?) @rose-griffes for confirming my worst fears. I mean, these anti Finnreys are really something else. Don’t like the pairing, fine. Don’t want it to be canon, whatever. But pretending the romantic clues aren’t there, that the pairing is utterly impossible, that’s just racially motivated self-deception and nothing else.
And take a look at all of the shit that gets thrown at Iris West/Candice Patton by a certain fangroup of The Flash. So yes, it would be ugly and as much as I want it to happen, I would also want LF to grow a fucking backbone and prepare for it and stand by John’s side this time… and if Daisy ends up returning to social media, they should back her up as well. LF should shove Finnrey into everybody’s face and make it incredible, so that the shippers can silence the racist bullies who will undoubtly scream loudly if Finnrey happens *sigh* Also we as a fandom should prepare for it as well, especially we should consider how to protect our fellow shippers from attacks, especially black shippers. Bc we all know some people in the fandom would not take Finnrey well at all and attack the shippers for that…
I’m guessing that if canon Finnrey happens, it’s going to get worse backlash than Westallen or Richonne (Rick/Michonne from The Walking Dead) for a couple of reasons. For one thing Star Wars is a much larger fandom with actually a sizable white supremacist contingent. For another, well, it would be a pairing between a Black male character and a white female character whereas Westallen and Richonne are pairings between white male characters and Black female characters. A Black man being in a relationship with a white woman apparently provokes more racist rage than the reverse, at least in the American context.
Large sections of the SW fandom do a really poor job of concealing their racism even now when they deny to themselves left and right that Finnrey could ever happen and deceive themselves into thinking their fantasy white ship will be canon. They already get salty as hell about Finn being a focus of fandom passions and make up all kinds of excuses to call the Finnrey fandom toxic. I hate to think what these people will be like once they can no longer deny to themselves that Finn is the male lead and not their whitewashed stand-in. I’m not sure what to do if that happens because it’s going to get very ugly.
Yes, Star Wars’ impact is so huge that the backlash will have absolutely different levels. I also fear a lot of it will be from the “black men are taking white women away from white men” attitude, which can already be seen among R/eylo shippers who have written headcanons that are in a similar tone…
I absolutely think that – if we have actual real hints about it happening – we have to get together and try to prepare ourselves. Bc I absolutely am not sure what to do if things get as bad as I fear either… bc no doubt will they throw garbage at us as well, and while I am white and an adult, I am really worried what this might do to underage shippers, especially shippers of colour, and shippers who aren’t mentally stable. In this sense I hope LF grows a brain and sees the potential danger in the fandom. But I doubt they would. They certainly don’t notice what their promotion tactics are creating now, so…
People always argue about which one is better, Star Trek or Star Wars, but seriously, Star Trek did the scandal back in the sixties. (Yes, I know, it was a white man and a black woman, but it was outrageous enough for the episode not to be aired until the late eighties or something.)
Git gud, Lucasfilm, Paramount did it too.
Good point! It’s one way for Star Wars to make up some of the large lost ground in the “Star Trek or Star Wars?” debate. That, and better representation of WOC.
I love that Ubisoft’s response to the racist white man pain mess that was Watch Dogs was by giving WD2 a black male lead. But then when racists got angry, Ubisoft put wearable blm merch in-game, added playable buff female characters and black vikings to For Honor, diversified their roster in Rainbow Six Siege, made their newest Assassin’s Creed games take place in China and Egypt, and made Far Cry 5 be about beating up white supremacists.
Conspiracy Theory: Ubisoft Was Killed And Replaced By A Look Alike
Whatever demons Ubisoft inhabited exited into Bioware.
#ubi 3 years ago: how do i animate a fucking woman
Yo, I’ve got a really good female friend who works for Ubisoft. Instead of acting like it’s witchcraft that Ubi’s changing it’s tune, you can thank the women and other minorities working inside gaming companies that endure being called names by all of you lot AND being treated like crap by their own coworkers and still keep persistently trying to push for change inside their company.
They work tirelessly despite getting shit from absolutely everyone, gamers, co-workers and internet trolls alike.
^^^^^ Remember how women and minorities are told all the time to make their own content? Here they are doing just that, and climbing Bullshit Mountain every single day.
