One of the top spies in Wakanda, Nakia is one of Wakanda’s many sleeper agents that keeps tabs on the outside world and report back. Contrary to the nation’s isolationist nature, Nakia believes that Wakanda has a duty to help those beyond its borders; her stubborn and passionate belief in this often putting her at odds with her King and ex, T’challa. She is primarily an agent of espionage, but has shown herself a deft combatant, and master of multiple languages. She utilizes dual kinetic vibranium rings in Black Panther, provided to her by Shuri.
A spy, Nakia’s wardrobe shifts and changes as she needs it. Always pragmatic, Nakia always maintains an elegance in her costumes, favoring deep greens until her armor in the final fight scenes.
I don’t understand how you can see Killmonger disrespect culture, attack women, basically was trained by military to tear down civilizations, his own father says he is disappointed in what he’s done, move to arm black people outside of Wakanda with high tech weapons (yes cuz giving Leroy and em cannon blasters is gonna help the cause) and y’all still fix ya lips to say he was right lol when Nakia exists. Wild.
I was waiting for someone to say this.
There’s a reason he was the villain. He killed his girlfriend in cold blood. His anger was understandable, true, but his methods abhorrent and destructive. The end result would have been huge amounts of death and chaos. No positive outcome.
[Killmonger was an amazingly written villain and a great, if not perfect, example of how to execute a “tragic backstory villain arc”. Due to his characters anger and Michael’s incredible acting it made Killmonger a character a large amount of people could empathize with. An amazing villain. Truly.]
Nakia LITERALLY was team “let’s stop having Wakanda be an isolationist nation and help the worlds oppressed” from the jump and she doesn’t get enough credit.
Black Panther made it very clear that white Hollywood just doesn’t know how to write a female warrior in love.
Okoye loved a man too, but her story wasn’t ABOUT him.
He didn’t have to teach her a damn thing
She didn’t give anything up for him.
She didn’t go evil for a quick second and go on a rampage, losing herself, because she lost him.
She didn’t entertain, for even a miliisecond, compromising herself for him
She wasn’t crying over him
Their relationship wasn’t shoehorned in for no reason other than “there has to be a romance”
Most of her scenes had nothing to do with him
Except for the last point, all of that applies to Nakia too… but in addition
When he interrupted her work, she was angry and allowed to say something along the lines of “you ruined my mission!” unapologetically
She continued to do her job
She continued to thrive separate from him
Love for a single man didn’t outweigh her love for humanity and it wasn’t something she had to agonize over. It was a simple decision that wasn’t considered a real conflict for her.
In general, love didn’t make these heroes and warriors weak. It didn’t make these women vulnerable in a way that didn’t fit their personalities or compromise their duties.
In fact, we only saw love do that twice – when T’Challa saw Nakia and when T’Challa watched Zuri die.
