It’s so funny that people who talk about Finn “fixating” or “obsessing” unhealthily over Rey fail to recognize that Rey fixated to a far greater extent on Finn. Remember Takodana? Finn was the one who accepted Rey’s decision not to come with him and walked away from her like a normal, healthy person does because he is not an abusive shithole who tells her she’s nothing trying to manipulate her into compliance. Rey was the one who didn’t want to part with a guy she had just met but she also did not assault or belittle him to make him stay because she is not, despite her trauma and abandonment issues, an entitled and unbalanced woman who thinks it’s okay to impose her will on others. Yeah, Finn went back for her when it was clear she was abducted and in imminent danger, like a good and brave person does for someone they love. How is that unhealthy or weird again?
But Rey? Did you forget the part where she searched the woods on Starkiller Base to find a wounded Finn, except it wasn’t to rescue him or anything–the planet was disintegrating around her and she wasn’t looking for the Falcon, trying to carry Finn to safety, or even drawing attention so a passing Resistance vessel might see them. At the end of her mental and physical resources, having retraumatized herself in the fight by confronting her greatest fear, she gave up hope and simply lay down on her beloved friend (whom she had known for a day), crying. For all intents and purposes she had found him to die with him.
To be clear her reaction is fully understandable and sympathetic, like mentally ill lovestruck teenager helloooo, but if you want to talk about an unusually intense fixation on a new friend that’s clearly Rey toward Finn way more than the other way around. My weirdo space nerd girl out-weirds out-dramas her gorgeous space hero any day of the week and I love her for it, okay?
But please, scurry back to your fact-free echo chamber and keep trying to convince yourself that a relationship built on torture and abuse is healthy while one based on friendship and devotion is not. 😉
Hey @leroisoleil who wrote a fricking novel in my comments, again, read the post I linked for you that Jason Fry himself said was accurate. Here, let me quote the money line for you:
“The idea that Finn was too focused on Rey was Rose’s hangup, not the omniscient truth.“
Rose is what’s known as an unreliable narrator here. Because she’s really traumatized, lost her sister and has nothing but the Resistance left like you yourself said? You can interpret Finn’s love for Rey however you like, but you’re putting words in Jason Fry’s mouth in direct contravention to a summation he said was accurate.
And yeah, I don’t look kindly on people who give such wildly misleading statements and then link me the original as though they assume I can’t read it for myself using, like, the rules of English grammar and stuff. Also what’s with the butthurt over the screenshot lmao. Sorry I wanted to make things convenient for you and put like… multiple text links… in one post?

Thank you for pointing this out, @imagine-mystrade.
Of course, the response to this has gotten very ugly toward me. I responded, which I know means I’m opening myself to harassment on Twitter, but it’s a fucking echo chamber over there, and they’re spreading lies about me that people are swallowing it whole.
This book is anti Reylo. Love it. And Rey wanting to quote Finn! Yass. And rubbing it in that she kicked Crylo’s ass! The following passages are so strongly heroine/villain dynamic. Good shit.
Wasn’t Rey unconscious when Finn said that, though? Was she clinging to consciousness, or maybe this is force vision juju going on?
Rose Tico is nothing but a antiblack wet dream. She thinks Finn is a bumbling idiot and is obsessed with physically assaulting him no matter what he does. She’s disgusted at him if he even shows the slightest agency lmfao. Like he can’t even talk about his friend Rey without her getting angry, demeaning him, and fantasizing about assaulting him. She’s demonic. She shouldn’t be the representation we get for the first main woc in star wars and yet thats what she is!!! It isn’t anti-Asian to say all this lmfao!!!! It’s literally facts!!! If you support this character (not the actress duh Kelly Marie Tran is an angel), you’re an antiblack piece of shit too!! That’s facts!! If your Asian Representation comes with a side of violent Antiblackness THAN FUCK YOUR REPRESENTATION!!! You should be able to ask for better representation and NOT accept a sexist, antiblack mess!!! So everyone using that stupid “this is representation” argument to act like Rose Tico is anything but a horrible character? You’re dumb af. That isn’t an excuse to have such a vile character who serves no purpose but to live out yall antiblack fantasies. Fuck Rose Tico. Fuck Rian Johnsons racist ass. And fuck all of yall who told us over and over that we were overreacting or that we were bad people for not accepting Our onscreen representation being degraded and hurt.
All. Of. This. Even before the novelization showed how horrible she was originally intended to be, Rose was terrible representation for the first Asian lead and the WOC lead in a Star Wars film. She was always abusive and demeaning toward Finn and she never had quality writing in her own right. She had arc or character growth to speak of.
Now we see the full picture of the terrible person Rose was meant to be. The worst part of her depiction is that all of her increased abusiveness and assholery aren’t meant to be flaws. We aren’t meant to see her as an awful person Finn needs to escape. No, she’s meant to be one of the heroes and her abuse of Finn is meant to be not only comical, but a sign of her supposed love for him. And that’s just sick.
The only silver lining in both the film and novel is that Finn doesn’t develop much attachment to Rose as he did with Rey and Poe. He doesn’t even have a reaction after she kisses him. It wouldn’t be at all unrealistic for him to not engage with her at all in Episode IX.
Calling this horrible character Asian or WOC representation is like serving us dung and saying we should accept it as meat because it’s an animal product. Rose is just plain abusive and violent, an awful cross of misogynistic and anti-Asian stereotypes. It makes me sick to the stomach that Johnson is hiding behind Kelly to evade the blame for his shitty writing. Asian bloggers who criticized his writing were attacked for being anti-Asian, which no we’re anti Rian Johnson’s antiblack and anti-woman ass lmao.
Hilariously Reylos didn’t notice this change in Rey’s perception of Ben Solo back to Kylo Ren. Just as they missed the part where it says she stood over him and contemplated killing him. Nor did they pick up on the reasoning for sparing him having nothing to do with her feelings but everything to do with the will of the force.
Add to this the end where she severs their force link with no compassion and we have a decent picture of Rey’s feelings: she won’t kill him while the force has a purpose for him, but she’s not going to care about his feelings anymore.
What?! She actually thought about killing him while he was unconscious? So… Hux was also reflecting – in film – what Rey thought about doing against him! 🤔
At this point, it is very clear how their relationship is moving forward. Reylo happening on IX and beyond would basically be… a retcon… if it happens. So it’s really “dead” at this point. 👀
You know, I remember some twit quoting Gandalf’s line about not being too eager to deal out death to those who deserve it, and applying it to Kylo. This line referred to Gollum, whose life Frodo did in fact spare. If Rey’s sparing Kylo similarly leads to him being alive to do something selfish and evil that inadvertently saves the galaxy and causes his horrible death, I’m all for it.
the first female character of color with a sizable role in the star wars films and they make her a jealous entitled violent creep who contributes to the physical harm and belittling done to finn -_-
