Yeah, there were and are unfortunately a lot of genocides throughout history and they come in a lot of different forms. The Holocaust was a very specific event and is not a stand-in for all genocides omg. There’s no ground for comparing Alderaan to the Holocaust, and as far as I can tell it seems to be based solely on the meaning of the word being stretched beyond all recognition, coupled with the galactic-level reach of Leia being played by a Jewish actress.
The dictionary definition is kinda clear – it means a mass genocide, so I
understand why people use it. And Carrie was of mixed heritage – I dont
know if she even identified herself with being Jewish, tbh.
But i wouldnt call the destruction of Alderaan a holocaust – it reminds
me more of the destruction of The Temple – and Alderaanians being
scattered across the galaxy in diasporas, longing for their former peace
and glory.
@die-sphinx No, used as a proper noun it means “the mass slaughter of European civilians and especially [Jewish people] by the Nazis during World War II“ (link). This was the sense in which the questioner used the word in the ask, capitalized as a proper noun.
Small-h “holocaust” does have an older meaning of sacrifice or destruction by fire (not generic genocide), but the word has become so strongly identified with that one historical genocide that it’s iffy even to use it uncapitalized in other contexts imo. As far as I’m concerned, if a word is stained with the blood from the torture, enslavement, mutilation, rape, and murder of millions of your ancestors then you as a group have earned that word many times over and it belongs to you.
I hadn’t seen anyone do this. (Moth)
I don’t think I get the reference, but don’t turn down the best bounty hunter in the galaxy, Vader!
I was against ReySky after TFA, because I thought that the movie was too painfully derivative, and ReySky was too obvious. After TLJ, I changed my mind, because my biggest problem with the ST is the utter ruination of everything the OT heroes did and the seeming pointlessness of their struggle. RotJ was my favorite movie, and having all of Luke’s efforts be smashed by the capriciousness of the ST writers was horrible. I don’t care about blood purity and really don’t care about Kylo Ren, but the idea of the Skywalker line dying out in such a banal, depressing story makes the ST worse for me than it already is.
I understand and respect your opinion about how it’s more democratic for Luke’s legacy to be passed down through his non-blood-related students… but I see no reason at all to think that it would last any more than the OT’s successes did. The way the ST is set up has burned all of my goodwill or trust in anything working out in this universe in the future. Everything is built on sand. There is no victory, only war. Even though bloodline is petty, it could be something, perhaps the only thing, that survives between the OT and ST. Without that, everything of the OT heroes dies, and nothing remains to say that the works of the ST heroes won’t die just as ignominiously.
Reply to the submission: Yeah, I’m not in love with the way the ST just smashed the OT’s achievements to hell in order to repeat the OT’s central conflict either, and if I were in charge of the ST I would have done it differently (link). That said, I also think the ST is a very timely story at a time when we’re getting all sorts of déjà vu at the rise of fascism.
Regarding the ST, I think the conclusion is unavoidable that the Skywalker bloodline, specifically the fixation on it as something powerful and special, was a big part of the reason things fell apart so badly. It was why Snoke targeted Ben Solo in an inverse of Palpatine targeting Anakin: Where Palpatine preyed on Anakin’s humble origins and sense of isolation, Snoke targeted Ben for his supposedly exalted lineage and an adult Ben bought into it. In the Bloodline novel, Leia’s blood relationship to Vader was why her political career was derailed and it was one reason for the Resistance’s subsequent troubles.
Could ReySky have pushed back on this repugnant fixation on bloodlines and made the Skywalkers about family again? Absolutely, if there had been positive family ties between Rey and Luke it could have pushed back on the idea that family is about blood. With Luke dying in the absence of such positive familial interactions, though, ReySky at this point simply reinforces the idea that the Skywalker legacy is about blood supremacy. This is just a recipe for more Kylo Rens down the line.
I disagree that nothing about the heroes survives if ReySky is not true. Luke and Leia’s love survived. Leia’s legacy of resistance will survive through Poe and Finn, and many others who took up the cause. Luke will not be the last Jedi, as he said himself. The OT heroes’ actions reverberated throughout the galaxy and inspired new generations of heroes. That can’t die, no matter what darkness may rise again, no matter how many times the same fight might have to be fought.
Lando Calrissian’s Return in EP-IX should about Lando
Since even before Lando was confirmed to be in IX, and his return was just a rumor, I’ve been watching people make his return about almost everyone else but himself. The worse offenders of this have been Reylo shippers who make Lando’s return all about Kylo’s redemption to the ge of saying Maz would chew Lando out for wanting to hurt Benny Boy with the threat of Han Solo haunting him.
With this Fuckery I thought I should go over some canon facts about Lando for everyone.
Canon Facts
Han and Lando loved each other and were as close as brothers. They shared decades of adventures together.
Lando cared about Leia and Luke deeply and became like family to them. They had years of adventures fighting.
Lando and his people were almost killed by the Empire and he was given the horrible choice of selling out his friends or Cloud City, the city he was in charge of, would have been punished by the Empire.
Lando and Chewie were just as close as Lando and Han. They had even spent a year looking for a Han was Boba Fett captured him.
Shara Bey and Kes Dameron, Poe Dameron’s parents both served and fight along side Lando, Han, Leia and Luke throughout the last war. They were family.
Kylo murder Han Solo
Kylo led the attack that almost killed Leia
Kylo tried to kill Luke and indirectly did
Kylo led another attack that would have killed Leia
Lando would be furious about Maz’s castle being destroyed by Kylo and the First Order.
Lando would be furious about the torture Poe had gone through by Kylo and the First Order.
Lando would hate Kylo and the First Order for killing his friends and allies in the New Republic and the Resistance.
Lando would hate Kylo for almost murdering Leia twice and leaving her for dead.
Lando would hate Kylo for indirectly killing Luke.
Lando would hate Kylo for murdering Han in cold blood.
I have watched this one wretched part of the fandom to so much shit.
Post TFA they demonized Han and Leia, calling them abusive, neglectful, fear mongering parents while making Rey and Luke’s entire purpose to be redeeming Kylo Ren.
Post TLJ they demonized Luke, Han, Leia and the entire Skywalker name, and blamed them for everything wrong and bad about Kylo while making Rey’s sole purpose to be Kylo’s redemption baby factory fuck toy.
Now Pre-IX they are demonizing Han and Luke, and making Leia’s exit from the movie and Lando’s return all about redeeming Kylo.
How about no.
Lando’s return is about Lando. It’s about him continuing the fight against people that have killed his friends and family. Lando won’t be trying to save Kylo, he’s going to fight him.
Lando will finish what he started 30 years ago and end those fascist bastards. Stop making Lando’s return about Kylo.
Lando knew that thousands of deaths weren’t just a statistic, unlike this fandom, Kylo’s mass murdering life isn’t worth more than the Galaxy. stop ignoring a character’s pain.
Who do y’all wanna use and slander next?
Poe probably knew Benny Boy his whole since their families were so close. Should Poe save Benny Boy next?
Finn and Kylo were both apart of the FO. Should Finn save him?
Or should Kylo be held accountable for his actions and people should stop treating these characters like they’re from some crap romance movie.
Oh I know, the story stretches both backwards and forwards in time, involving many other people. But when the first Star Wars movie premiered in 1977, it began with Leia.
It began with this.
Leia and Carrie has been synonymous with each other and with Star Wars ever since. And having Episode IX without her would have been more than odd – though if the alternative was recasting I’d rather not have had Leia at all. No one but Carrie will ever truly be able to be Leia.
Because it all began with her.
Without Leia’s courage and determination, not to speak of her wild and reckless plan, none of the rest of the story would ever have happened. Vader would have captured the Death Star plans from the Rebellion and eventually all system would have cowered in fear of the indestructible doomsday weapon.
And the Empire would have ruled supreme.
If not for Leia the whole story would have been over before we had a chance to hear it.
Nor did Leia’s story, her courage and determination end there.
When a new threat arose to threaten all that she loved, Leia picked up the gauntlet and began to build the organization necessary to fight it. Even as others attacked and ostracized her for it, despite having lost more than most could ever imagine losing and still live.
I am glad that JJ found a way to have Leia in Episode IX. A way to properly conclude not just the Skywalker saga, but Leia’s own personal story. A story of losses and tragedies, but also of courage and hope. Of love found, lost and then found again. And most of all, a story of the importance of resistance and defiance against oppression and tyranny. At all cost.
Because we need our Jewish princess and general, who will fight Nazis with her last breath now more than ever.
The world may no longer have Carrie Fisher in it, but her memory and the memory of Leia and her constant defiance lives on.
Too traumatized for romance? In Star Wars, where the most iconic romance is between a genocide and torture survivor who lost her family and planet, and an orphan who turned to crime from a young age and also suffered capture and torture during the war? No one can tell me Leia was not borderline suicidal, running on rage and revenge, when she led the Death Star to the Rebellion base in an all-or-nothing confrontation. Nor can we ignore the way Han had Leia on informal suicide watch during the evacuation from Hoth and told her as much. Han being tortured and then sold to a crime lord was the catalyst that finally brought them together, and they bonded as a couple during his rescue and recovery. Life eventually became too much for their relationship to bear, but together or not they loved each other until the very end.
Nah, trauma doesn’t disqualify anyone from romance and that goes double for Star Wars. Rey and Finn if anything are healing for each other, and arguably are the only two people that understand each other and love each other unconditionally enough to achieve the complete intimacy of a committed relationship. Frankly any romances they get into with other characters would feel tacked on and won’t be interesting to me.
who believes in love at first sight? – neither really, though once they got the first good looks at each other they both went all “OH NO HE’S HOT!” not quite love at first sight but definitely some good ol’ oh shit I’m so gay at first sight xD
who started liking the other first? – Luke, but only a bit earlier than Lando. they were pretty drawn to each other from the first proper conversation, and they took pretty damn long to actually say it out loud
who is more likely to suggest a romantic, candle-lit dinner? – Lando for sure, that’s 100% something he’d do
who’s behind the wheel more often during road trips? – Luke, though if they travel through hyperspace he lets autopilot take the wheel and do some more interesting stuff with Lando 😉
who sets up the tent and who gathers firewood during a camping trip? – Lando sets up the tent and Luke gathers firewood
who hooks bait during a fishing trip? who catches more fish? – I gotta admit that I really don’t see either of them being fishing trip people, but maybe Luke?
who insists on learning how to ballroom dance? – Lando is like hey we should definitely do this thing, and Luke is like yeah okay could be fun
who goes all out on the other’s birthday? – Luke 100% has the time of his life putting together a really lovely birthday dinner for Lando (it’s just the two of them bc this is the one occasion where Lando does not want to have big party) (heyyy guess whose fic gave me this headcanon lol)
who sings louder while cooking? while showering? – Lando with both^^ Luke thinks it’s cute, and Lando is a good singer
who teases the other for said singing? – Luke doesn’t tease, he’s more like “stop it, you know I can’t resist that beautiful sound!”
who insists on checking their zodiac sign compatibility every so often? – nah, they don’t believe in that kind of crap. especially Lando is more the type who’s like “we fell in love and we make this work, some days we work really hard to make this work”
who drags the other to fortune tellers at fairs? – I think they both did it once for shits and giggles
who would carry who over the doorstep of a new home? – I 100% need Lando to do this, with the cape and all that’s just 👌👌👌👌👌
