Finn Appreciation Week, Day 1: Favorite Scene(s)

I know this wasn’t in TLJ, and a shame, since it would have made it much less shitty. But I chose this because it actually highlights two things: Finn taking control and Phasma realizing too late that her instincts about him were spot on. He did have the right stuff for leadership. He could rally others to follow him and listen to him. She spotted that he had this ability and wanted to bend it to her will, and now here she is realizing that he can destroy her. The stormtroopers are listening to him. That’s why she kills them. That look in her eyes is fear but it’s also dread that she could not successfully harness that strength of will for her twisted purposes. Finn was too good and too strong for that.

Finn Appreciation Week, Day 4: Tropes

To Understand, To Forgive

There are things Finn can understand.

He can understand how the weight of someone’s opinion can push you to doubt your own judgement, to justify actions to yourself that you would otherwise never take.

He can understand being trapped and having no way out, to desperately search for one, while trying to survive in a system that demands total compliance.

But he cannot understand not searching for such an out, understands even less how someone cannot take it when it is offered, not once, but twice. Doesn’t comprehend how anyone can reject that chance of freely offered escape.

There are things Finn can forgive.

The other Stormtroopers, the cadets that trained alongside him, he finds it difficult to judge them harshly. He knows what they all went through, the violence both mentally and physically they were subjected to, the abuses heaped on them to make them comply. He can’t find it in his heart to condemn those that gave in, those that could not find a way out and – knowing that defiance meant death – obeyed orders, though he asks no one else to share his forgiveness of them.

But he cannot forgive those who visited violence on others with malicious glee, those who had a choice, had the rank and influence to choose differently, but didn’t. Nor can he forgive those who inflicted violence on him, those who for their own goals, or their own joy, caused him pain and injury.

This is why he’ll never understand Phasma, nor forgive her.

This is why he’ll never understand Kylo Ren, nor forgive him.

There are sound that, even years after the war has ended and peace been restored to the galaxy, will send Finn’s heart racing, make his stomach clench up and fear spark beneath his skin, making him want to do nothing more than escape in that moment. Just as there is a certain tone of voice, a cold precise diction, that will do the same.

He knows the First Order is gone, that the cannot harm him or anyone again. He know that Phasma is dead, he killed her, watched her fall into the flames of the destroyed ship. But knowing that does nothing when the panic digs its claws into him.

poe: -well you better call your mama then, boyyyyyyy! [hangs up phone]
rey: that was really great poe
finn: yeah you really got em!
poe: thank you thank you it’s an art. here finn it’s your turn
finn: okay… [takes high tech phone and dials in a number with shaky hands]
poe: alright buddy nice and easy
finn: hi is this…. phasma?
poe: oh shit
rey: [laughing]
finn: hi yes I just wanted to inquire about your refrigerator and how it seems that it uhh….
poe: [whispering] come on buddy bring her home
finn: and the way it traumatized me from birth to the extent i still have nightmares about it daily and eventually i AM GOING TO MESS UP YOUR FRIDGE PHASMA KNOW THAT
rey: WHOO!
poe: uhh
finn: and also? your mom’s ugly! [slams phone shut] how was that?
poe: there are… some areas of improvement i guess but overall i liked your spirit
rey: YOU FUCKING CRUSHED IT FINN
finn: YEAH I DID REY!

in a way i’m glad they didn’t include that phasma moment, because while she would indeed look like a badass, finn would look a bit cheap using her as the selling point as to why the stormtroopers would need to rebel. they should’ve gone the route where the stormtroopers are all in awe of finn because he defected and came back to finish the job. in any case finn should be the one coming out of it looking like the true essence of the light side. ryan kyloson is just an awful writer.

I agree it’s not ideal, but it would also have been the whole lot more than the final cut of the movie gave us about a possible Stormtrooper uprising. I like your idea a whole lot better. And you’ll get no argument from me about Ryan Craig being awful.
