Talking and laughing would be good enough for me for a start. Establishing them as friends for a while now, especially since there’s been a time skip and they’ll have gone through some shit together offscreen.
I want Poe wingmanning for Finn and Rey, poking at Rey to talk to Finn about her feelings. She swats at Poe, too nervous to talk to her own best friend.
I want Finn and Rey doing the same for Poe, encouraging him to ask out Lando’s super-cute aide (who also happens to be Lando’s son and is played by Chadwick Boseman i can dream ok) and, when Poe insists the guy is out of his league, take matters into their own hands by trapping Poe into talking to him alone.
I want them to have real drama together, like Finn wants to help the Stormtrooper uprising and Rey, still upset about his attempted self-sacrifice at Crait, is strongly against his taking such a risk. Poe tries to mediate and strategize, but his worry for Finn still shines through. And, of course, they’re coming with him and won’t hear his objections.
I want them in ACTION together, Poe in sniper mode again and Finn and Rey cutting a swathe through the enemy with Poe watching their back.
I would love it if they confronted Kylo Ren together, the three people he tortured, wounded, and manipulated facing him off side by side, the true successors to the heroic trio he would have all butchered if he weren’t such a flop.
I want to see them celebrating together, hugging and kissing. I want to see Finn spin Rose around in the air, I want to see Rey squeeze Poe until he begs for mercy, I want Finn and Rey to share an epic victory kiss (and Rey would be the one to dip him, of course). I want them to revel in the joy of victory and of being alive with each other in a galaxy that is once again free from terror.
I loved everything about this list!
Side note: In the TFA visual guide it says Poe has his mother’s ring as a necklace that he intends to give to his partner one day.
Imagine if we see one of Lando’s kids wearing Poe’s mother’s ring and we don’t find out till a little bit in the film that Poe got married to him and the baby casting notice is a refugee baby Poe and his husband adopted
It’s a tinfoil hat theory, but I think it’s sweet.
*dies from sweetness overload* Also it would be a way to overcome Disney’s homophobia by having nothing too overt on screen while also making it BLINDINGLY clear.
The marriage and adoption could have happened before EP-IX.
Star Treck Beyond did it and JJ produced the film and he loved the idea.
JJ loved the idea that Sulu was a gay character and liked how it was handled in a way that wasn’t controversial, but natural. If that’s the direction JJ and Oscar want for Poe, I can see that happening.
I feel like Disney could fix what they did to Valkyrie when they cut the short clip that confirmed she was bi-sexual.
Maybe the Rebels gain refuge on Cloud City with Lando, and Poe’s counterpart in coordinating their resources is Lando’s heir Ekino. Or maybe Leia decides to take a page out of their enemies’ playbook and the Resistance become a mobile strike force (I mean there are few enough of them left…), with Ekino being Lando’s liaison. Poe and Ekino grow close as they talk supplies and strategy, and Poe sometimes wonders what this devastatingly handsome man who is brave enough and generous enough to pour his fortune into and risk his life for the fight against the FO sees in him. He wonders if this make him a gold digger while Finn and Rey inform him that he is ridiculous. Ekino himself can’t believe that this daredevil and hero, the acclaimed pilot who flew so many missions for THE Leia Organa, actually returns his feelings.
Their feelings get a little complicated and they start seeing each other less. When begging Poe to just talk to Ekino doesn’t work Finn and Rey trap them into a one-on-one meeting, and Ekino confesses to Poe that a part of him always sought meaning in his life beyond his riches, that he yearned to live up to and even surpass his father’s heroism. But now that the universe has tragically given him all too much of an opportunity he is afraid, though glad to serve, all the more because he has a new fear–losing Poe. They lean into a long, sweet, kiss.
By this time Kes has barged his way into the Resistance despite Poe’s entreaties and threats to stay safe on the family farm. ”M’ijo, I’ve been here before. If you think anywhere is safe try turning on the holos for five minutes.” He, Leia, and Lando exchange knowing looks as they watch Poe and Ekino falling deeper and deeper for each other. They, along with Lando’s spouses Kaasha and Lobot, plus a holoimage of a smiling Shara that Kes carries everywhere, are there for the ceremony when Poe gives Shara’s ring to Ekino and Ekino, in true Calrissian fashion, gifts him with a dashing cape.
Why the hell you trying to give me diabetes with that sweet shit? Black Squadron at the wedding cheering Poe on like goofballs. Jessika and Rose sharing a dance, Finn being the best man, Rey talking Poe out of cold feet, Kes and Leia bonding over their lost spouses and having a sweet friendship, Rey and Finn realizing their relationship might go deeper than friendship, Chewie in a space Tux, and Poe happy!
Fuck we need some fics. Give Poe a husband, you cowards!
I thought I was the only one who shipped Jess and Rose! It’s awkward because I previously shipped Jessika with Paige; put the two headcanons together and you get one fucked-up tragic premise. And aaahhhh I love wedding romances so much–Finn and Rey dancing together to slow music, looking into each others’ eyes, each wanting to speak but afraid to, yet their eyes say it all…
Karé is in the wedding party and catches the eye of Ekino’s maid of honor, his sister Yamina, who is an artist of galactic acclaim and gives a stunningly beautiful performance at the wedding that leaves everyone in tears. Yamina is played by Janelle Monáe with sky-blue hair and no body paint, because this is CANONICALLY how Twi’lek genes work when mixed with human ones.

Yuuup. And the assholes crawling out of the woodwork to scream “sHE WaS grIEvInG” are all that more of a nightmare.
Johnson could have just done something different easily. He just chose to do it in a way that disrespected Finn the most and made Rose a conflict, which was his intention.
The scene could have gone relatively the same way, up until Rose notices Finn’s bag, and Rose can even try to taser Finn, but since Finn is aformer elite Stormtrooper and Rose is a mechanic with no history of combat experience, Finn disarms her easily.
(I would not do that stupid as hell reasoning that someone gave her clearance to stop deserters. Who gives a mechanic with no combat experience the job of guarding escape pods from actual trained soldiers Who are serving in a volunteer militia? Rose could have been serious hurt.)
They could have their same exchange of figuring out their being tracked and Finn could also question Rose on how she even got to the escape pods because something like that should have been sealed off by a high-ranking security clearance and neither he nor Rose should have been able to get in. Rose could say she hacked her way in, a skill she taught herself over the years.
They both realize what this could mean and go to Poe and the three create a plan. Finn will use his knowledge of Snoke’s ship to infiltrate it, Rose will get them through to where she needs to go through hacking, and Poe will go with them as added support and their pilot since they’ll need to be quick on getting in and out of there.
And then boom!
Rose actually has a purpose that doesn’t involve being a conflict to Finn and adds something to the story while still allowing her to grieve
Finn isn’t made a joke out of and reminds the audience that he IS a trained and capable soldier.
Poe is doing what he does best and is breaking the rules to save lives at the cost of his own life.
And even better, now Holdo has to stand on her own two feet as a character without being thrown into conflict with Poe, and get screen time with her life long friend Leia and we can actually learn to care about this character they are going to kill at the end of the movie.
Now Canto Bright is cut and we have more time for character development. We could learn about Finn’s conflictions on fighting in a war against people who were enslaved like him, his desire to free them instead of kill, Rose’s desire to help the Resistance because it’s all she has left after Paige, and Poe’s determination to not let all of the sacfices his family made be in vain.
Plus it makes this picture make more sense.
Whoopsie! There I go trying to make Johnson’s film better.
I’m sorry.
The best thing about TLJ are all the fan fixes of TLJ which make it 100000x better.
For the life of me I can’t figure out this argument that Finn’s sacrificial charge at the cannon was hateful and Rose’s “not fighting what we hate” line worked as a coherent expression of theme. The arguments I’ve seen for Finn’s charge being fueled by hate are basically made up to make Rose’s line work and have weak bases in the actual canon scene. Here are some I’ve seen, with counterarguments:
Argument: The mission was pointless because Finn already knew no one was coming to save him and he was going to kill himself out of spite.
Counterargument: There’s no basis in the actual filmed scene to say the original reason for the ski speeder mission–earn time for allies to arrive–was invalidated. Confirmation that their signal was received but not responded to only came after Rose crashed into Finn
Argument: Finn said earlier at Canto Bight that it felt good to hurt the war profiteers with the falthier rampage, while Rose said no, it was worth it to set the falthiers free, which was clear foreshadowing that Finn was driven by hate and a desire to hurt while Rose was focused on love and freedom
Counterargument: Okay, to vent a little, that exchange was plain bad and rendered both Finn’s and Rose’s arcs absurd. It was a really weird and abrupt switcheroo from when Finn was the one who was temporarily awed by the beauty and glitz of Canto Bight and Rose was the one who wanted to put her fists through the town. Plus, given that Rose was the one who tased a wounded Finn into unconsciousness and paralysis because she was so angry at him, it’s kinda rich to see her play the saint without any kind of apology or amends.
To get to the main point, If this exchange was meant to be foreshadowing it was poorly done because the two situations were so different. On Crait Finn was trying to save his friends and preserve hope for the future, attempting to destroy a weapon for that end isn’t inherently hateful
Argument: Finn was bathed in red light, which in Star Wars means he was on the Dark Side of the Force
Counterargument: Effects like lighting can be a nice supplement to storytelling but can’t override the actual story. Like Jesus Christ you really don’t have arguments, do you?
Argument: Finn was mistaken about his sacrifice having any impact, Rose is a technological expert so she stopped him from sacrificing his life meaninglessly.
Counterargument: Actually Finn recognized the technology while Rose didn’t, he has way more reason to know how the First Order’s tech works, and TLJ showed him to be Rose’s peer in terms of technical knowledge and ingenuity.
Even if we accept this argument, though, at best it says that he was being ignorant or incompetent, not hateful.
Argument: Finn was angry during his charge, unlike Holdo and Paige who were more serene.
Counterargument: So being kinda mad that the fascist organization that kidnapped and enslaved you is now going to kill all your friends = being a hateful Dark Sider? Being angry at oppression makes you the moral equivalent of your oppressors now? And if Finn had been more calm and serene about sacrificing himself to save his friends, would the exact same act cease to be hateful?
Argument: Rose said Finn was being hateful, so it must be true.
Counterargument: I saw this circular reasoning from more than one person. Again, you know they don’t have any arguments when they work backward from the conclusion. I mean maybe it’s possible the scene was just poorly written and the movie was incoherent as hell?
@thehungryvortigaunt That’s what tipped me over into actually writing this post after stewing over my growing irritation at these arguments. This is just one of the ways in which TLJ is heavy-handedly and nonsensically Christian, and fandom is falling all over itself trying to validate its idea of Finn and Poe as scary and violent when in fact they are the ones who are frequently targeted by violence.
This is a concept art of Poe Dameron from your Proposed Episode VII. I gave him more of a spy-vibe, with less obvious Rebellion influences, since he’s backed by the Republic in your version. His pistol has “Bey” written in Aurebesh on it. His headband references Raymus Antilles in RotS, and his close affiliation with Alderaan. Finally, his backpack expands into a spacesuit/jet pack, as it’s about time technology advances in the Star Wars universe. I’m not a great artist, and his face looks a bit off, but I loved your idea, and hope you like mine!
(Moth)
As an infant, Poe Dameron barely saw his parents due to the Alliance’s continued operations against the Imperials before and after Endor, as his mother worked as a Rebel pilot for the Alliance’s Green Squadron and his father was a member of the Pathfinders, and Poe was thus left in the care of his maternal grandfather.
Six months after the Battle of Endor, after the Imperial remnant put forward Operation: Cinder, Dameron’s parents left Rebel service to reunite with him, and settled on Yavin 4.
I did a quick bit of mental arithmetic on this, which is tricky because in a lot of cases years are calculated from various character’s ages but without us knowing when in a given year they were born it could all be a bit off.
Even then, the result is… interesting.
We know that the First Order have been raiding planets in the Outer Rim stealing children to raise as soldiers in their forces for a long time. In fact that was part of the original plan hinted at in the Aftermath trilogy and then confirmed in the Battlefront single player part.
Yavin IV is located in the Outer Rim as was probably not well defended being a very newly settled planet after the Galactic Civil War.
Finn is 23 in TFA which takes place about 30 years after RotJ so he would have been born about seven years after RotJ.
We don’t know how old Finn was when the First Order stole him, but if TFA we see a picture of him attached to his file where he is little more than a baby.
Shara dies in year six or seven after the Battle of Endor. (This is where is gets a bit tricky because we have to calculate after how old Poe was when she died and we don’t know what time of the year he’s born, nor which time of the year she died.)
So Shara dies either the year before Finn is born or the same year.
With this it is entirely possible that Finn and his family is from Yavin. Perhaps his parents too are former Rebellion soldier who settled there after the war. That the First Order raided Yavin seven years after the Battle of Endor and stole as many children as they could, Finn being among those children. And that Shara died fighting those raiders back.
okay then consider: Finn and Poe being childhood friends.
Finn has dreams of steamy jungles and being surrounded by green but he doesn’t remember what they’re from or if they’re even based on anything real
Poe always wonders what happened to that little boy whose parents always brought him to the market with them and why did he suddenly remember him now
