I don’t know why I’m asking this here(maybe ‘cause all the other Asian blogs I found like this character) but as a fellow Asian who is into SW: What *is* it about P*dme Amid*la that makes her exempt from criticism that would be directed at any other SW character(white or not)? I’m not saying people can’t like the character(though I’m in the extremely small (AFAIK) if not almost nonexistent minority that doesn’t) but fandom puts her(for some reason only one with this treatment) on a pedestal.

Oh, is that so? In my circle she’s not exempt from criticism at all. Here’s an essay by @diversity-instarwars which argues that she (and Satine) carried out/advocated for genocide. I have no idea why there’s such an embargo against criticizing this character–maybe it’s because she’s one of the few female characters in the Star Wars movies and criticism is seen as sexist or something?

Hi! The link to the post is broken, but here it is, and I’ve also linked another post of mine talking about Padme’s lack of care for marginalized groups, here. Only if anon wants to read it.

I agree with anon, Padme is a very untouchable character and sometimes the slightest critique of her can be seen as sexism. But she’s a very complex character who comes from a  place of privilege and wealth, and she is bound to use that privilege to her liking and advantage. I think we should explore that
to see how she affects others. Placing her on a pedestal and stripping her
complexity is sexist in itself because then, we are just painting her as a
positive light for the sake of Anakin’s narrative.I love Padme’s character, but I think it’s good to look at
her critically.

Thank you for the fixed link and the additional post! I fixed the broken link in the op. Yeah, Padme’s nothing like the pure ray of sunshine some sections like to portray her as. I believe she’s a dedicated and caring character, but she had her own biases which she acted from.

What really annoys me is that the ‘join me and we can rule’ dynamic has gone on between Emperor/Anakin, Vader/Luke and everyone understood it was about the evil guy looking to use the power of the hero to increase their own power but suddenly we have the exact same dynamic and because one is a guy and one is a girl it is suddenly claimed to be sexual tension. Suddenly he is proposing marriage, lmao.

I think it’s because he said “please” that made it feel so different. Suddenly it wasn’t a power dynamic, Kylo recognizes Rey as his equal.

Palpatine said ‘please’, which was just a fake out to make himself seem vulnerable to lure Anakin to the dark side. Kylo was also trying to lure her for her power. There is no difference and nothing about it makes it ‘sexual’ except that for some reason when you have a girl in the mix she instantly becomes an object. That somehow he can’t possibly just want the same things that Vader and Palpatine wanted (to use their strength in the force to help them rule) but now he must want to bang her and make her have his babies.

I’ve just realized that according to the logic of antis, George Lucas is a pedophile (so far as I know, he’s actually not).

I mean, he aged up Anakin (9) and Padme (14) by ten years for Attack of the Clones so they could be shipped.

Why have I seen no discourse about this? 😛

And for those who think those headlines might just be clickbait, here’s the relevant excerpt from the Escapist Magazine article:

(Below a cut because YIKES!)

…anyway I’m still watching Star Wars, I’m tired of pedophilia callouts especially when the article you sourced doesn’t directly or remotely help you with your argument

Also that source is a fucking FORUM (AKA not reliable at all)

Even if he was a pedophile (yeah I’d be ashamed as hell, but it’s not my business and it’s certainly not anyone else’s)

This also happens to be a really bad time to call yet ANOTHER male actor/director out since like half of the accusations made after this month began are possibly fake

It’s really suspicious that all these accusations are all coming out at one time

There is no argument. Those are FACTS. And that FORUM links to the ARTICLE. There are also MULTIPLE SOURCES. Also, here is the link to the official transcript where the damning conversation occurs: http://maddogmovies.com/almost/scripts/raidersstoryconference1978.pdf

Also, the actual conversation:

It’s really suspicious that all these accusations are all coming out at one time

Mate, buddy. That shit is from freaking 2009! It’s not new. It’s not “just coming out”. It’s been know for years.

And no one says you have to stop watching Star Wars. (Especially as George isn’t even involved anymore) But boy did you get passive-aggressive defensive fast.

Though I really wonder how anyone could have missed that George was and is a major creep.

Imagine child Anakin building C3PO out of scrap cast-off parts Watto doesn’t think are resalable

Imagine Anakin taking a little bit from each scrap part, pulling a robot arm together.

Imagine his joy when a part first starts to work

Imagine his frustration when an arm that’d eventually be C3PO’s stops working and he takes it apart piece by piece to find where it went wrong and he finds sand inside a piece he thought was sealed.

Now imagine the tenth time that happens. The thirtieth. The hundredth.

Or imagine him working on his pod, making it out of cast-off, worn-out parts. Every time it breaks down, his Force sense shows him exactly where the faults are. A turbine’s sucked in some sand and its bearing finally gave out here. An electrical fault here because the insulation wore away in a Tatooine sandstorm.

A solder joint on one of C3PO’s circuit boards breaks because somehow a grain of sand got into the solder while he was forming it.

A piston works for a week, then grinds to a stop. Anakin opens it up to find it full of sand.

It’s then that he breaks down, a  sobbing seven-year old child “I hate sand! It gets everywhere!”
