I haven’t really followed the official SW social media accounts. Anyone more knowledgeable about this than I am? I know there was considerably less Finn in the promo materials for TLJ than for TFA, so I wouldn’t be surprised if social media reflects the same trend.
I just saw the TLJ trailer on TV and flipped off the screen with both hands until it was over. Felt good.
I called a cab and the fucking app was shilling TLJ to me like I was “automatically entered” into a sweepstske to win a ticket and the icons indicating my and the cab’s locations were bb-8 and the millennium falcon like no fuck u go away
I watched that part and while she could be just teasing–the tone is playful and giggly–she does make the point that Han’s death is a bigger part of Rey’s story than Finn’s or Poe’s, since both John and Oscar were clear in saying that the story moves too quickly on their end to dwell on Han. (I personally think this does a disservice to Finn’s character, since he also connected with Han as fans such as @kyberfox and @senatorfinn have pointed out here and here.)
It’s notable that Daisy specifically interjected after John’s and Oscar’s answers to point out how much Han’s death affected her character, perhaps to assure fans that Han is not forgotten in the movie. Blood or not, it’s clear that Rey’s bond with Han is a major part of her story.
TFA was all about diversity. We had a female lead for the franchise for the first time. We had a black lead and possible new Jedi lead.
We went from “yay to diversity” to “this story is going to be about these three specific white characters, specially the guy who spend the last movie murdering and torturing people maybe not being that bad”. It is now attracting a very specific group of people and fandom will reflect that. I’m not bothering checking tags anymore just following people I trust.
To be fair, there’s another possible motivation here.
Star Wars does not need Boyega’s help.
Pacific Rim 2 might.
This is a good point right here.
It’s also possible TLJ is going to focus more on Rey and we won’t see as much of Finn. I’d be disappointed if so, I think as a character I like him slightly more, but if you remember how Luke-focused Empire was and that Rey is basically Luke and Finn Leia… (And yes, you will pry force-sensitive Finn out of my cold, dead hands).
But, going back to the other, because as happens I thought some more after I hit the reblog button. I think if Boyega IS choosing to promote the “less well known” movie it’s a good choice.
For myself, I was “I liked Pacific Rim, but I don’t know that it needs a seq…John BOYEGA? I’m so there!”
He’s a very talented actor who is developing the star power that gets audiences in the door, so why would he promote the movie that’s a guaranteed success instead of focusing his attention on the one that has a risk of flopping?
If the two movies had overlapping time frames for their promotional tours I might agree, but Pacific Rim Uprising opens in MARCH. So far as I know there is no press tour for PRU yet, and John did not cite it as a reason for skipping the TLJ tour.
