Yeahhh, I’ve been hearing CRA isn’t all that, too. A group of Asian-American women journalists went to see it together and were disgusted at how misogynistic it was. I also read it erased the non-Chinese (Malaysian and other SE Asian) population of Singapore. Its story beats are familiar to anyone who’s watched KDramas or soaps and I fucking hate KDramas so I’d probably hate it lol
One thing I appreciate about the Korean hit children’s franchise Pororo is the character of Crong, a baby dinosaur named such because it was the only sound he could make at first. He’s slowly started picking up words, much to his friends’ delight and support, but he’s still not very verbal.
What I really like about him is that he’s shown to have the same range of feelings and intelligence as his friends. He joins in all the activities, laughs and has fun with everyone, and has arguments especially with his roommate Pororo.* He’s no different from his friends, he just doesn’t talk much.
Another way Crong differs from a stereotypical neurodiverse character is that he is not a scientific or mathematical whiz. The fox Eddie is the scientist of the group, and interestingly is also the most self-aggrandizing character who creates things to show off his brilliance and get the others to admire him.**
Crong never shows a particular aptitude for science but does have a vivid imagination, including what we might call a special interest when he really gets into a flashing and beeping bracelet toy and dresses up in a costume to match. His friends, after being annoyed at how noisy he was being, then showed their support by dressing up the same way. It’s just really nice to see a potentially autistic-coded character shown as inspiring other characters with his quirky imagination rather than as a dehumanized savant type useful for his ability to build things.
* I firmly believe that the two are meant to portray a sibling relationship. Pororo literally watched Crong being born, thought at first Crong was a scary rampaging monster while Crong just wanted to follow him and play, and the two fight all the time over household duties and messes with an emotional intensity not seen between other members of their friend group. What could be more brotherly?
** In this context it’s interesting that Eddie is also the teacher of the group in the educational videos. It suits him, since he’s easily the smartest character, but we also know that he’s a venal know-it-all in other contexts. It’s an entertaining choice for a teacher character to have those character flaws, especially since he retains his strutting mannerisms in teacher mode.
it is honestly keeping me up thinking about how many asian bodies are treated with so much brutality in death so I really do not have time for Baze and Chirrut being stuck next to typical white male narratives.
Just in sci fi alone off the top of my head: Wen triplets in Pac Rim – killed by Kaiju. Toshiko Sato in Torchwood – shot in the gut. Glenn Rhys in TWD – baseball club to the head. Maggie Chen in OB – backstory fodder. Vincent in AOS – I can’t actually remember but burnt to death, I think. Skye’s mother, cut to threads.
And so on and so forth. Their deaths are for shock value and they get mourned but after that there’s not more to it. Not counting: all the cannon fodder and Yellow Peril movies and Oren Ishii and Beverly Katz and Daredevil and Iron FIst and all the others from media that I don’t watch or gave up long ago.
And they could be well-developed characters in otherwise decent media but their death is always so fucking brutal. So of course we build immunity to that pain, of course we’re less sensitive to seeing the same bodies on the news – it grates you down, after a while. It is so so tiring.
And on top of that I’ve never seen two Asian men openly show affection and bicker and tease eachother and make jokes with history behind them except for in LGBT movies (and I guess recently Star Trek). because it’s a cultural taboo to be too emotional or too affectionate or too afflicted in front of non-familiars and that has turned us into Inscrutable Orientals.
So if I have to have a death scene – give me one that is fucking tender, dammit. Give me one that has meaning and emotion behind it, that does justice to the historical emotional baggage between the two characters. Give me the fact that Baze and Chirrut – their relationship, the narrative space they took up, their history – was something that fucking mattered instead of just another body because compared to all others, this death scene was by far least uncomfortable to watch.

Actual Depression: bloodshot eyes, no longer trust themselves with pencils, has not showered in five days
Quirky OCD: organized books, clean room, color coordinated outfits
Actual OCD: Intrusive thoughts, flipping the light switch 8 times so you don’t stab your brother, picking holes in your skin
Cute eating disorders: Slim trim and beautiful, shyly refusing a second helping, dancer aesthetic
Actual eating disorders: Puffy cheeks and eroded teeth from excessive vomiting, hair growing over your freezing body and refusing to eat carrots because they’re too high in carbs
Adorable anxiety: just a smol bean, soft, must be protected from the world
Actual anxiety: crying so hard you throw up, shaking, losing sleep over a period after the “okay”
RPG PTSD: flashbacks, vietnam, u don’t know what i’ve been through kiddo
Actual PTSD: Buying your first pregnancy test at twelve, flinching at high fives, i can’t feel my hands where am I what year is it
Cartoon ADHD: look a squirrel, something shiny, fidgety loveable bufoon
Actual ADHD: rereading the same page over and over because it doesn’t make sense, hasn’t done the laundry in four months, hyperfocusing on a mushroom knowing you have work to do

Real autism: worrying about whether you’re interpreting people’s cues correctly/making your tone sound correct for the context, or whether they’re about to get wierded out and uncomfortable bc of something you said, sensory issues that drive you nuts, not being able to adapt to sudden changes in plans and freaking out, melting down or shutting down when stressed by stupid things
