Like here’s the thing: word of mouth travels fast. Not to mention
a lot of diehard fans were not a fan of this movie. Like this movie has a lot
of older fans really annoyed. People are frustrated with how Luke, one of the
most iconic heroes ever, wasn’t written well and a lot of people were also
frustrated at how the new characters who we have grown to love were handled.
Disney, next time? Hire a director for all three movies and
you won’t have this problem.
It’s not just older fans, it’s literally every group.
Fans of the OT in general? Pissed off
Luke fans specifically? Pissed off
Those who came to Star Wars through TFA and are most invested in the new heroes? Pissed off
Rian, LucasFilm and Disney managed to piss of nearly every single fan group. And it’s not just the die-hards, casuals are angry too. So yeah, consider me underwhelmed with surprise
The obliviousness in the linked article ahahahaha
‘There’s a feeling that “Jedi” is soft at the box office. I don’t know why. It’s just as good if not better.’
Just remembered weaponizing hyperspace jump alredy happened in Star Wars Rebels and the cracked mask thing happened with Vader vs Ahsoka fight, and Yoda randomly Appearing to give advice though force Skype happened Ezra and Ahsoka, and a hero and villain unexpectedly teaming up (Maul and Ezra) only to get betrayed a few moments later happens as well, and there are ppl out here calling Rian original and refreshing I’m-
I’m keeping my expectations low, personally. Abrams was an executive producer for TLJ, it’s not like he had no say. I’m ready to live forever in TFA-verse and various fan AUs if it comes to it.
To be fair EP is sometimes a meaningless title.
Usually they aren’t the ones making the decisions or doing that much.
Stan Lee is an EP for Marvel movies he has very little involvement. And
Christopher Nolan was the EP of Batman Vs. Superman and The Justice
League god knows he didn’t approve of that.
True, sometimes it seems more of an honorary title than anything. And if JJ had had actual decisionmaking power he presumably would have done something about the blatant contradictions of TFA, if nothing else. Remember when we tried to tell ourselves TLJ couldn’t be too bad because JJ was EP? Good times.
Executive producer are responsible for two things: Management accounting and legal issues. They also contribute to the overall budget of the film and are responsible for attaching investor to the script/production. They only have limited amount of influence on the material though, depending on production.
Since we don’t know what he actually did during production you can safely assume he actually just put money into this to get money out of this which a lot of EP do. And JJ has a history of doing this.
So him being an EP means nothing without any context on what he did. And since he is not credited as writer, he probably had very little influence on the script if he had any.
I get this feeling that the People saying JJ Abrams doesn’t disagree with Rian Johnsons choices because he was EP don’t really know how production works.
Bonus: JJ saying in his interviews he loved the script and wish he could have directed it doesn’t mean anything. It is his job to promote his movies. Just like the actors.
Thank you for the input! I was wondering what it is they do. The money aspect in particular explains why big name people (Stan Lee etc.) who aren’t really involved in the creative process are attached as EPs.
And not only would it be unprofessional for JJ to speak badly of a project he’s involved with, I am positive that he is legally bound not to. I am not an entertainment lawyer, but even small scale contracts (relatively speaking) for manufacturing or distribution often have clauses that prohibit parties from casting aspersions on each other and the project. For multimillion dollar entertainment contracts where image is everything? You bet your ass there will be consequences for not toeing the party line–socially, legally, financially, and on every level that exists or remains to be invented.
I think the confusion has come because people assume movie exec producers are the same as EPs in TV, who absolutely do have creative control over their shows. But Star Wars isn’t JJ’s baby – it’s Disney’s now. He’s no more than an *extremely* well paid hired hand, and he’ll do what he’s told, say what he needs to and laugh all the way to the bank.
But he’ll also make Episode 9 in his style, with his warmth, ethos and grasp of the characters he created. So it can really only be an improvement.
Wait, Who are we blaming then? I need names. I haven’t seen it yet, but I want to be prepared to properly place my anger on the right folks.
Rian. Rian Fucking Johnson. He was the sole writer and directed the thing. More than one actor had objections to his script and he appears to have gone ahead to do whatever the fuck he wanted. I blame Kathy Kennedy too for greenlighting this shit. So feel free to growl “Johnsooooon!!” or, for variety, “Kennedyyyyyy!” like you’re a character in shounen anime, assuming the venue allows for it/you don’t mind being kicked out.
Darth Vader’s real successor in the sequel trilogy is Phasma, not Kek lol Redpill. She’s the one who has Vader’s intimidation factor, his mystery, his ruthlessness, and just all around coolness.
Post cancelled, she was a cool-seeming character who should have gotten more use but suffered under 2 different male directors who had no idea what to do with her. Any canon development will have to be left to supplementary materials. Rest in pieces.
