so rose, in span of +/- 18 hours: loses her sister, wants to get revenge, hopes she could destroy canto bight because it’s full of people who make money on war and then suddenly she’s all “we won’t win by destroying what we hate but by protecting what we love”??? after she crashes into finn’s speeder not knowing if he won’t get injured in the process??? how fuckin dumb can you be to write smth like that?

I’m looking at reactions for people who have seen TLJ and all I’m getting is people talking about Kylo moments and Relo fuel and nothing about Finn or Poe or Rose and honestly I’m a little worried.

lj-writes:

Maybe people have their own biases, but from what I’ve heard it sounds as though nothing Finn, Poe, or Rose did made the slightest difference to the plot so maybe it’s a natural choice.

You don’t need to worry about canon Rell’o, though, the movie closed that door at least.

On the contrary, because they were keep in the dark by the white leaders, Finn/Poe/Rose made things worse ending with many rebels being killed and them (Finn/Rose) being nearly beheaded. (I choose to reveal this because people should be warned of how fvcking racist if not triggering this movie is.)

So there’s your life lesson, kids: Always listen to the nice white people. Thet know what’s best for you.

Okay so I just saw TLJ and I honestly loved it? I understand the complaints about Lando and the lack of representation, but is that really what ruined the movie or is it something else? I guess I’m trying to ask what you thought was bad about the movie because I really liked it

finnpoee:

  1. finn waking up and immediately hitting his head and falling off the bed for some dumb bad joke
  2. finn wearing that stupid water thing and walking around like a dumb helpless baby until poe found him
  3. finn and rose meeting with rose tasing finn and calling him a traitor
  4. even though he literally never joined the resistance like he was the reason they achieved their greatest single victory and he almost died so they were taking care of him but he never joined and he sure as shit doesn’t owe them anything
  5. finn being tased supposedly being funny and like him being immobile from it while rose drags him so she can take him to the brig being played for a joke
  6. finn and rose’s entire storyline was pointless and an excuse for rian to get finn on his knees so hux could slap him
  7. which was so incredibly disturbing like hux is a fascist that runs the first order that kidnapped finn and tried to raise him to be a killer and he escaped and got his freedom but this is what he gets? it’s really seriously disturbing to me that rian would pull that shit
  8. the movie starting with poe doing some reckless stunt and ignoring leia and causing the deaths of like what a couple dozen resistance personnel? absolute dog shit
  9. leia slapping poe literally just because rian, the director of a $200m movie, doesn’t know how to transition between scenes
  10. even though half the scenes were three seconds and ended before they even really began
  11. the cgi was shit and half the time it was so dark i could barely see
  12. rian pushed r*ylo for the vast majority of the movie. him going SIKE at the end doesn’t make it okay and kylo displayed textbook abusive behaviour
  13. rey somehow seeing the light in him even though she couldn’t understand why luke would want to stop the evil before it got even worse
  14. rey listening to kylo’s side of the story even though she thought he was a monster but then. not listening to luke? he literally told her he couldn’t go through with it and she fucking tried to fight him like it’s stupid
  15. poe? out of character
  16. finn? out of character
  17. leia? out of character
  18. luke? out of character
  19. rey? out of character
  20. rose? inconsistent
  21. paige literally died after like. one word?
  22. leia literally stunned poe. for no reason.
  23. leia demoted poe (and slapped him) because he pulled a reckless stunt but then they did the exact same stuff towards the end and lost a bunch of resistance people under both her and holdo. there was literally no difference lol
  24. the entire movie was just an excuse to be abusive towards finn and poe, kill a bunch of resistance people, and like allow rian to metaphorically suck kylo’s dick
  25. i’m not even that connected to luke but it was obvious to me that his whole thing was bad and it was super inconstant how he saw darkness in rey and how quickly she went to it and refused to train her but then decided he would and like ended w saying he wouldn’t be the last jedi even though rey literally fought him and betrayed him to try to save poor baby ben
  26. every single reference to kylo as a child or being young and trying to pin the blame on snoke or luke or who the fuck ever
  27. holdo called poe a reckless trigger happy flyboy and like rubbed all those deaths in his face and literally all he wanted to know was that there was A. PLAN. and that they weren’t just burning fuel waiting for the first order to continuing killing them
  28. tfa ended with the resistance destroying starkiller which was a massive victory for them so like explain to me how tlj continues right where tfa left off but the first order has this new magic technology to let them track the resistance in hyperspace and like the resistance is suddenly on their last legs while the fo is thriving
  29. the finnrose romance? literally not built up at all they were at odds for so much of the movie and again it literally started with her tasing him and like that line rose says is so stupid like rian really was trying to be deep but it did not happen. at all
  30. rian genuinely thought luke milking that dinosaur was good enough to make the cut but couldn’t fit a gay relationship or lando or like something not abusive into the two and a half hours

there’s my top thirty lol take your pick

people are exacerbating poe’s actions in this movie so much. yeah, he gets a bit reckless but it’s because he’s passionate about the cause and wants fascists dead, not bc he gets off on violence. he’s not portrayed as a terrorist or extremist at all, just someone who has a slightly distorted view of what it means to lead. it’s really not that bad lmao. why aren’t poc characters allowed to be complex and have flaws :/

the fact that his selflessness and bravery is shown as “flaws”….. that is so fucking bad???? because that’s what’s wonderful about poe.

like… this is what i really didn’t like about rogue one and how cassian and saw gerrera were treated. they are selfless heroes of color who risk their life to fight fascism but the movie shows them as if it were bad to be too “violent” like them.. put that centrist bullshit away from me lmao

The problem isn’t that Poe has a skewed concept of what it means to lead, it’s that he is already a diverse character who cares deeply for the lives of his fellows and Rian threw that out the window. Passion and recklessness are NOT the same. Poe is absolutely passionate, that’s why he’s so committed to single-handedly doing fucking everything, risking no one’s life and trusting his superiors. This is why the narrative the comics set up is much more along the lines of Leia teaching him how to accept the risk of delegation, how to trust his team on a mission, how to lead rather than doing all the heavy lifting alone. That’s miles away from some too-passionate terrorist extremist who doesn’t listen to his superiors, goes too far, and gets people killed with his recklessness. Presenting him this way with his “slightly distorted view” is fucking stupid and it is, at the end of the day, still pushing that narrative. He’s already a complex character with flaws. Those flaws don’t have to be racist.

See, Poe is a latino man. Latinos know all too well what revolution is like, the right to kick your oppressors out of your countries so that you can self rule, colonisation.

White people are always the ones who did the colonising, which is why they find it so hard to understand the motivations of characters like Poe and Cassian and Saw, characters who hate oppressors because they know exactly what it feels like to be oppressed.

It’s very easy to scream “extremism” and “terrorism” when you’ve  never been forced to be in a position to fight for freedom. Johnson is a white cishet man. I rest my case.

You’d be amazed at what a good night’s sleep can do for you.

No, really. You would. The need to throttle an entire fandom just kind of… disappears after a good night’s sleep.

So today, I want to talk about how The Last Jedi is almost certainly going not going to have any major, ‘shocking’ twists in it.

Join me under the cut!

… let’s talk about the complete and utter failure that is the Lucasfilm Marketing Department for a minute.

One thing that really stands out this time around – and I don’t think that ‘bait and switch’ marketing is a defense for it – is the default whiteness of marketing and promotional materials, particularly the trailers. This isn’t unique to LucasFilm; it’s a huge problem in the US. Teams that don’t take specific steps to combat that will almost certainly end up replicating that prioritization of white characters.

That same kind of default whiteness (and more specifically white male-ness) is how we got Rian Johnson as the writer/director for episode VIII. It’s an unthinking kind of racism that, by itself as a discrete act, is hard to call racism (and misogyny)… until you combine it with the many other choices that look just like it.

Johnson’s comments about Kylo Ren and his limited track record before Star Wars both display a focused interest on white male criminals. But for all the power that he has as the credited writer and director, this is a team effort, and he still has to build on the foundations that J.J. Abrams established.

And yeah, I agree that Johnson’s Star Wars debut is almost certainly going to follow the tracks that Empire Strikes Back put in place 37 years ago. So while I’m side-eyeing some of his comments, I’m still at the point of cautious optimism about TLJ. And hey, unless Johnson ends up killing her, we’ll have him to thank for bringing Rose Tico into the storyline. Even if we never get to see her in the official trailers. :/

(I do wonder just what kind of storyline shifts happened in that whole “Oh hey, our new lead characters were more popular than we expected, let’s make sure we give them plenty of screen time!” epiphany that we heard about shortly after TFA came out. Because at that point Rian was already at the helm.)

I think that Rian’s comments are more a reaction to the fandom/third-party obsession with Kylo Ren, an obsession that the general audience doesn’t share. It’s hard to talk about Finn, for example, when the only person anybody asks you about is Kylo Ren. And when you look at the interviews and Twitter comments, that’s mostly what he’s been asked about: Kylo Ren. It’s telling that when he had a Q&A where he got to pick and choose the questions he answered, he skipped Kylo Ren entirely. The fact that the fandom likes to twist boiler-plate villain backstory into woobification does not help in the slightest (and it’s not even backstory Rian came up with!).

The marketing department, on the other hand, has no defence. They are either deliberately choosing a strategy that pissed off everybody last time (the whole bait and switch thing) or they’re deliberately sidelining Finn in exchange for a character that the general audience has proven they don’t give much of a damn about (Kylo Ren). Either way, they fail that most basic of tests: did they succeed at what they were trying to do? The answer is no.

Kathleen Kennedy needs to fire their asses; they are costing her tons of money.
