Imagine if Finn and Rey’s romance isn’t some dramatic development but a quiet, matter-of-fact one. They’re talking early in Episode IX, which probably has a time skip, and before she leaves Rey leans over to give Finn a kiss on the lips because they’ve been dating for a while and it’s nbd. The audience goes apeshit while the everyone on screen is completely nonchalant and, oops, there’s a crisis to get to. What a power move.
honestly i think this makes the most sense. if there’s a time skip i can’t really think of why finn and rey wouldn’t have got together already. like they’ve obviously been moving towards it from their first meeting. the only thing I could see is that maybe they’re holding back until the first order is defeated but even that seems kinda weird. but l could totally see them talking about their future plans, exploring the universe together or settling down on a nice green planet after it’s all over, and then rushing off to save the galaxy
I also think theres a lot more potential drama if they’re already in a relationship. there’d be the duty vs love dilemma and the struggle to maintain a relationship during a war. also every disagreement they might have becomes more complicated.
The war being still ongoing and the Resistance being in terrible shape may explain it, actually. That would be the “Book 3 Kataang” situation from Avatar: The Last Airbender where one or more of the couple (Katara in that case) is afraid of getting too close and then losing another person they love. Both Finn and Rey have significant traumas that could complicate intimacy for them, and in the middle of a war anything could happen to them at any time. That’s cause for a lot of fear.
As though that’s not enough Rey will have to work through her manipulation by Kylo Ren and what he did to her sense of self. The urge to blame herself and be ashamed is likely to be strong, and her ability to trust her own judgment and instincts will be at a low ebb. On Finn’s side there’s the question of Rose, who is herself working through grief and is going to need a lot of support. She’s also proved… hard to say no to, to put it mildly.
To bring up another Avatar-verse situation, I’m reminded of Mako and Asami in later Book 1 of Legend of Korra. Mako and Korra had feelings for each other but Korra told him to stay with his then-girlfriend Asami, who was going through a tough time, to support her. I can see Rey telling Finn the same. (Of course the endgame couple in LoK was not Masami or Makorra but Korrasami, so if this tides for endgame Roserey I would be very happy indeed–assuming, of course, that Rose makes serious changes to the way she copes with grief and treats people she’s close to.)
All this is good fodder for drama, it’s just that I’m tired of it. The thought of dealing with all these psychological and relationship complications while wrapping up a fight against the resurgent First Order, bringing back the Resistance, and answering questions about the Force is too much. This kind of complex emotional material involving a group cast is more suited to the pace of a TV show than a blockbuster movie, and honestly I’d rather they leave the relationship stuff to a between-movie novel or comic (to be released after the movie) and focus on the action in theaters. Give me fluffy Finnrey and a happy badass Rose and let them kick fascist ass 2k19.
