I can’t add comments to @the-bi-writer‘s There Is No Redemption Here for whatever reason and asks are too short to contain my magnificent prose, so I’ll just put them here. This is for Chapter 6 (link):

Seeing how the description of Alia Ren in the last chapter scuttled my Keri Russell fancast I hurriedly replaced her with Naomi Ackie even though she’s probably too young to be a canon KoR. And then! This line:

“You have a weapon,” she hisses, responding to his thoughts.

reminded me of an amoral Maz, which in turn reminded me of Lupita Nyong’o, and that fancast upped the hotness factor of the battle SO MUCH that I’m tempted to change ships midstream 😂 So if this was not the image you had in your head while writing, I gift it to you in thanks for a great scene.

Anyway this duel was so neat!! I loved the decisive and deadly moves, the way the Force interacted with the combat movements, and even the ending with Lupita… er, Alia turning off her sabers midair. Her recruitment tactics are a bit sudden, but effective! Idk how much of a choice it really is, since Alia herself said it wasn’t optional, but I guess it’s more choice than Finn was ever offered before.

Continued for Chapter 7 of @the-bi-writer‘s There Is No Redemption Here, I’ll just go into stream of consciousness/liveblog from here. Spoilers, of course.

Further comments for Chapter 24, spoilers. The comment glitch comes up every once in a while and I think I should file a bug report with AO3.

Finn’s reunion with his family had me genuinely tearing up! I love that Snoke was right about the Galfridians and fighting fascists is just a given with them lol. I like how you used Finn’s old name Sam despite using the Finn Galfridian of Artorias motif from the EU, nice mix-and-match there. And as though I needed a reminder that John’s mom is a total babe…😍

I love the character Rhyssa has become! She basically doesn’t give a fuck anymore, it seems. I’m actually fairly sure Kylo wouldn’t care if he knew they’re plotting to kill him–he must be expecting it, much like he expected their escape. The cat and mouse game begins!

I wanted the knights of Ren to be resurrected force zombies but instead we got the crayola squad…

hanukkahfinn:

I mean we all have our own wishes and desires for the story, but here I have to disagree with you. The implicit confirmation on TLJ that the Knight of Ren are a group of former Jedi students that chose the Dark Side alongside Kylo is one of the few things I like about that movie.

Not just because it confirmed a popular theory about them but because it answers the question, “why did it have to be Leia’s and Han’s son?”. Not to mention it counters the claim that Kylo is the most important character in the ST, rather he’s the most unimportant character in the story.

Why?

Because it didn’t have to be Leia’s and Han’s son. Kylo Ren could literally be anyone and it would change nothing about the story. Kylo is a generic bad guy from a good family, with a good childhood, who chose to promote fascism and genocide because of a massive case of self entitlement.

I mean, let’s remove Ben Solo from the equation for a moment. Let’s say that Ben Solo was never born. What would change? Nothing, that’s what.

The First Order would still exist. Starkiller Base would still be build. The Republic would still not take the First Order serious as a threat until it was too late. Hosnia would still be destroyed. Snoke would still exist and find an apprentice and right here is where the fact that the Knights of Ren are other Jedi students shows that the existence of Ben Solo as Kylo Ren makes no fucking difference becomes the most important.

Why?

Who turned those other students? Hardly Darth Negging. Kylo Ren might be a lot of things, but master manipulator isn’t one of them. Clearly Snoke had a hand in that too.

So in a universe where Ben Solo doesn’t exist? It is simply one of these other students that becomes the main target for Snoke’s attention and nothing changes. Luke’s school still gets destroyed and I can see how Luke may still end up on depression island as a result.

Remove Ben Solo from the equation and you have so minor changes. The overall story runs as it always have, just with another original name for the person who goes by Kylo Ren.

Kylo Ren isn’t superfluous, there is a point to him. That people like him can and do come from all over and a lot, too many, comes from good background, good families with loving parents and it is their own sense of self entitlement that makes them choose as they do.

But the existence of the Knights of Ren and the confirmation that they’re old fellow students of Kylo’s shows that Kylo is the most unimportant one, because he could literally be anyone.

Also it’s a good bet that any one of the other KoR would have been smarter and more competent, so if anything Kylo being where he is may be the least worst of possible worlds.

The truly sad thing is, Finn spending TLJ in a coma could actually have been brilliant–but ONLY IF it the story had taken care to involve and center him. Obviously not in the way RJ described it in his tasteless joke, with Finn being inert and unimportant while only getting occasional cuts of him stirring in his sleep. That’s not just bad, that’s positively malicious (as much of the movie was tbh). But if the plot had involved Finn heavily, and the coma had been used as an actual opportunity to explore his story and the setting? In that case it would have been better than what we got in TLJ.

Consider: Finn is so seriously injured that he doesn’t wake for most of the movie’s runtime, and due to the haphazard circumstances of the evacuation the Resistance were not able to bring all the necessary equipment and medicine. On top of that they are under constant bombardment and the infirmary is flooded with patients, further complicating his recovery. This would emphasize the gravity of what Kylo Ren did to Finn while showing that the First Order is a direct threat to Finn as well as the Resistance as a whole.

Snoke berates Kylo not only for losing to Rey and being so conflicted over murdering Han Solo, but also for failing to kill Finn. Hux and Snoke are both extremely threatened by Finn’s defection, and Phasma reports unrest in the ranks for which she executed and reconditioned a number of troopers. Snoke makes it clear that he is chasing the Resistance’s main fleet so doggedly in large part because he wants to make sure Finn is dead, or better yet, to drag him before the assembled troopers and make an example of him. This further establishes the FO’s evil and heightens the sense of suspense because Finn is a character that the audience actually cares about, not a nameless extra like many of the Resistance members we saw die on screen.

Rey is worried about Finn and keeps trying to contact the Resistance. When the Force Skype happens she is angry with Kylo over Finn’s injury as well as Han’s murder. Kylo manipulates her in large part by telling her about the Resistance’s plight and the personal danger to Finn–and he insinuates, or lets her believe, that he would let the Resistance go and spare Finn’s life.

We continue the bond between Finn and Poe by having Poe go on the Canto Bight mission (or some better mission that makes more sense, getting help from Lando?), and Rose going with him because she is deeply affected by Finn’s heroism.

Most crucially, however, Finn’s coma is not just about him lying there but is an exploration of his past and trauma, even his connection with the Force. We see some of the Before the Awakening materials where he is an elite cadet whose only flaw is too much empathy. We get to see his relationship with a living Slip, his other squadmates, and Phasma. (Give Phasma more to do, you cowards.) This would parallel and contrast the exploration of Kylo’s past, continuing the foil relationship. Finn was already a cadet when Kylo Ren formally joined the FO, and this
intersection in their stories would have been interesting to explore.

We see glimpses of Finn’s traumatic kidnapping as a child, something that distresses him so much that it registers on the medical monitors. Finn also relives the massacre of Hosnia and many other things he wasn’t physically present for, including present events, though he is only able to affect things in small snatches such as shouting a warning to Poe at a crucial moment which Poe actually hears.

Finally, on Crait, Finn’s Force projection grows strong enough that he helps provide the crucial clue for getting out of the mines, and he leads Rey to the back entrance. Even Chewie sees him by this point and roars out a greeting. She is overjoyed at the connection with Finn and is happy and confident when she lifts the rocks, in direct contrast to her tension and sadness when talking to Kylo.

Finn finally wakes, Sleeping Beauty style, on the Millennium Falcon with Rey by his side and stroking his hand. They have a joyful reunion and everyone on board celebrates this flash of hope among the darkness, making the hopeful ending seem actually deserved.

Lesson: You can keep a character in a coma for a whole movie and still advance his story as long as you give half a shit about him. It’s telling that RJ’s treatment of Finn was so reluctant and half-assed that it was fully possible to tell a better story based on a throwaway joke of an idea.

I like the idea of Finn, his decision to defect, and his survival being a focal point for all groups involved. But I don’t think Finn needs to be comatose for it to happen.

And to be honest, although the story would elevate his importance, leaving him comatose would still be awful. Even though the plot would be more “about” him, Finn would be mostly a passive prop for most of the film, until he begins using the Force.

The problem with RJ wanting to leave Finn in a coma is that he doesn’t participate in his own story. More than that, he doesn’t get a story. Leaving Finn comatose keeps him relegated to a certain area, away from most of the action, unable to make decisions, unable to show off all his skills.

Although he would technically get a story in the scenario you’ve described, he would mostly be a passive prop. His most active parts would require other characters in order to happen, so he wouldn’t really have any time that was his own, other than flashbacks and dreams.

Since Star Wars is so action-centered, I think removing any character from the action, no matter how vital they are to moving the plot forward, is a downgrade for that character. I really don’t think there’s any scenario where leaving Finn in a coma for most/all of TLJ would work.

It’s not so much “Finn should have been in a coma” as “Finn’s story in TLJ was so bad that even keeping him in a coma could have made for a better story.” As in, a comparison of two terrible ideas–Finn in a coma the whole movie, and what RJ did–and showing that what TLJ did with Finn was even worse than the terrible joke of keeping him in a coma. Obviously giving him a decent action plot AND in-world importance is the best case scenario, but the point wasn’t to compare Finn’s TLJ plot to a good idea but to a really bad one.

I’m not even that big of a fan of Harry Potter, but I liked your post so much I drew up these. Young Rey on the streets and Young Finn as a Death Eater.

Easter Eggs
-Unkar Plutt becomes Uncle Plutt, the Troll crimeboss.
-Rey is in Knockturn Alley, but she thinks she has no magic, and is thus highly loyal to Plutt.
-Finn’s adoptive brother Slip dies in his arms shortly before his first day at Hogwarts.
-Finn’s Death Eater mask is based off from the First Order stormtrooper helmet.
