the thing with white people protecting things like hetalia or kpop or snk or south park is theyll defend it to their dying breath because
1. their token asian/black/brown friend says its okay, so clearly that makes it fine
2. since the racism doesnt affect them personally they didnt know that it could hurt other people
3. “im autistic and yellowface is actually my special interest so youre being ableist lmao”
white people always forget that them being not OVERTLY racist doesnt mean theyre suddenly incapable of microaggressions and being racist to poc as a whole. like just because youve never called me a racial slur or broken my jaw doesnt mean youre magically cured of being racist
you are encouraged to reblog this. white people dont add any commentary, even in the tags. i dont wanna hear it
A Korean-Japanese biracial person here. Hetalia and SnK are 100% absolutely overtly racist toward Koreans and Chinese folks. It’s just not overtly racist in Western eyes. K-Pop is overtly racist (it’s mired in anti-blackness) and shamefully appropriative (from the same black people K-pop artists tend to absolutely spread hatred for), which is perhaps the greatest shame in one of only Korea’s form of modern popular culture to have such a global foothold. White people just have a very high standard on what’s overtly racist.
Can you explain to me how the entirety of kpop is overtly racist and appropriative. Specifically how it’s anti-black?
I’m really just scratching the surface here…
Tumblr won’t even let me link more videos but like google is free… lmao…………
What else is there to say apart from the you can’t pick and choose parts of black culture to incorporate into your music while simultaneously dehumanizing and disrespecting them.
i have no issue with atheism as a concept but if you mock people who rely on their god to help them get through hard times, you are trash and you are not nearly as intelligent as you think you are
The issue with how the SW fandom treats Finn is that most of the hatred towards Finn is thinly veiled racism. For real, you guys are not subtle with your anti-blackness.
i always crack myself up whenever i look @ that f*nnrose kissing scene like. the fo is literally blasting thru a steel door that was the only protection the resistance had, leaving them all exposed, finn is trying to make sense of the whole “not fighting what we hate but saving who we love” speech coming from a girl who mere hours earlier tased him until he couldn’t move and spent the majority of their time together calling him a traitor and then she is kissing him and immediately passing out and like. that’s rian’s idea of romance…. it always cracks me tf up
Somehow this article fails to mention that Rosen is Jewish. Can we stop erasing this? A Jewish athlete wearing a “Fuck Trump” hat while golfing on a Trump golf course carries different connotations than a White gentile doing so. Let’s be honest here, in a post-Charlottesville US, there is no longer an excuse to act like antisemitism isn’t a thing.
Erasing the Jewishness of Jews we admire is antisemitic and yet it’s a common tactic. I saw it a lot during Bernie Sanders’ presidential run when people downplayed his Jewishness because they felt it made it easier to vote for him. Because, you know, despite him outright saying he was proud to be Jewish, he wasn’t like those other Jews, you know, the Jewy ones.
Let me pull out my favorite quote from one of the most famous Jews of all time.
“If my theory of relativity is proven successful, Germany will claim me as a German and France will declare me a citizen of the world. Should my theory prove untrue, France will say that I am a German, and Germany will declare that I am a Jew.” ― Albert Einstein
If you only notice the Judaism of Jews you don’t like, you are implying that you find Jews to be abhorrent by default and treat the good Jews as exceptions. That disinclination to admire Jews is repulsive and shows a deeply help and inclination against Jews.
I’m not calling Jemele Hill an antisemite, but this falls into a common pit of erasure. When Jon Stewart retired from the Daily Show a great many non-Jewish publications gave positive salutes to his work while erasing his Jewishness.
Y’know. This guy.
I keep running into this reaction “they’re Jewish!?!?!” As if they made active efforts to hide it (this has happened historically, but in the present day, odds are they didn’t).
Then there’s the issue of goyim only bringing up someone’s Jewish identity so they can attack other Jews with it, but that’s a subject for another post. In the meantime, the main takeaway from this post should be…
Disclaimer I have not seen the movie but from what I know these are not weak women.
I’m so sick of the inequality.
It is clear and I am not talking about the pink stuff or cold hard shit (although that kind of bothers me too). This is about the angle and position of the camera.
See in the picture the photo is from below and up. This is an angle often used to make people look more powerful. In the picture with the women you can see the picture is taken slightly from above. An angle used most of the time to make someone look small and weak. So basically these pictures are sending out the message that men are strong and women are weak. Stereotypes I thought we could move past.
Naw.
This is strategic and done on purpose in a good way. Essence is a Black women’s magazine (where these pictures are from).
I don’t know if you’re Black or not, but Black women traditionally don’t get to be seen as soft, especially dark skinned Black women. This is fantastic from my point of view. I’ve also noticed that dark skinned Black women often only ever get black and white photos (so no pinks at all usually) and often without smiles and humor shown. There are some black and white photos from the shoot of these ladies that are shot differently, but this particular picture on the left is completely refreshing and unusual and kudos to Essence for shooting it.
If you are Black then we disagree on the shots. If you are not, there’s context missing for why this is actually a very powerful decision to shoot it this way. What is seen as weak or powerful for others, even other lighter skinned WoC, is not necessarily the same for darker skinned women.
There’s commentary to be had on the men’s angle too, but I’m not interested in having it right now.
Sorry my mistake. I see where you are coming from but I don’t necessarily agree mainly because I always tend to disregard the outside and focus on the inside.
I don’t mean to sound rude but I honestly don’t care that they are black. I don’t care what people are on the outside. Black skin, good for you. White skin, good for you. I never based my opinion on their skin color they have but rather on the content of their character.
Yet again I see where you are coming from I’m just saying that women are generally shot from above and men from below, and it just so happens to reinforce the norm that men are stronger than women.
I’m going to be honest, you are really downplaying how groundbreaking this is by ignoring their skin color. Precisely because they are Black and dark skinned is why your analysis is shit. You’re ignoring history out of some idea of how women are treated, but all women aren’t treated the same. What is groundbreaking for some is not for others. For White women, this photo isn’t amazing, but in context, it’s phenomenal. It’s okay if you don’t understand it, but you can’t impose your will and history on something you don’t understand. If you’re going to ignore race then you’re forfeiting the ability to judge the goodness of the photo and your analysis is really worthless. By the way, you are willing to ignore race, a social construct, but intent on recognizing how some women are shot in media. Gender is also a social construct. You don’t see the irony in recognizing how socially gender is impacted, but ignoring how race is? That’s really not ironic to you? Really?
By the way, there are photos from this set that are representative of what you want. This is just one photo in the mix.
we have a terrible movie where absolutely nothing happens and i cry because i wasted $200 + some extra money in tickets and popcorn.
Star Wars is not about subverting anything, it’s just a dumb space fairy tale where everything is supposed to be good, or at least hopeful, by the end of each episode. If I want to feel bad about life and worry about how Dark and Gritty everything is, I’ll watch Game of Thrones.
Speaking of Game of Thrones, do you know what TLJ and GOT had in common? their terrible treatment of women and people of color.
Holdo, Leia and co were dumbed down as much as Poe and Finn and co (only that the Unfortunate Implications that come from those are different) because, the truth is, Rian Johnson is clearly not a bright man himself. He wrote a simple story that he tried to make deep and utterly failed at it because it just wasn’t the job for him. No estaba a la altura de las circunstancias. He fucked up, simple as that.
If you dont believe me, just look at how he overused lack of communication (with Luke and Rey, with Holdo, Leia and Poe and arguably with Finn and Rose, too) as plot devices that moved the plot forward. Look at how uncreative Kylo’s backstory was (uncle tried to kill him despite the fact that said uncle didn’t even have it in him to kill Darth Fucking Vader). Look at how “we” “needed” to have Rose and DJ turn to us and explain, word for word, that Rich People Don’t Care Who They Sell Weapons To/who lives and who dies (and I don’t mean this as an attack to Rose, but to RJ). How childish Luke and Rey’s training scene was.
He couldn’t show us what he wanted, he had to tell us. That’s what a bad, inexperienced writer does. Not someone working in a franchise as big as Star Wars. (for this, look at how he had to tell us, via Holdo, that Poe is a “hot-headed guy prone to insubordination, because there was no previous evidence supporting the contrary in TFA and only one (1) scene in TLJ).
Okay so apparently people don’t believe me or others when we say that the First Order are basically space Nazis. Here is a link to a direct quote on the subject.
Are we good now? Can you understand why people don’t want these Star Wars villians being treated as misunderstood babies?
Be careful about posts you reblog in regards to posts that criticize Wakanda for watching trans atlantic slavery happen. I’m seeing a few of these posts being made by nonblack people and that shit isn’t okay.
If you’re a nonblack person, you really do not have a leg to stand on on this subject. If you’re white, you really really do not have a leg to stand on.
Just think about it. If you’re ancestors were responsible for said slavery and/or you benefit from the results of said slavery, you making these posts scolding an African nation for not potentially risking their own people’s safety to save others is just offensive.
African Americans can criticize it because the trans atlantic slavery happened to us.
White people…it’s a really laughable watching you all move blame over to Black people. This isn’t ‘just a movie’ because it’s talking about the reality of slavery and the effect it had globally. Y’all already try to blame us for our own oppression with the whole ‘black-on-black crime’ myth and other respectability politics.
Just an FYI since people seem to be throwing around false accusations of racism and sexism without any merit…
It’s not racist or sexist against Kelly Marie Tran to criticize Rose’s assault on Finn.
It’s not racist or sexist against Kelly Marie Tran to point out how racist it was to use violence against a black man as comedy.
It’s not racist or sexist against Kelly Marie Tran to defend Finn and stand by the fact that he didn’t deserve to be treated the way he was throughout TLJ.
It’s not racist or sexist against Kelly Marie Tran to call people out for admitting that they don’t care what Finn’s been through and calling him a traitor.
It’s not racist or sexist against Kelly Marie Tran to defend Finn in general
.It’s not racist or sexist against Kelly Marie Tran to ship FinnRey or FinnPoe or to continue to see either pairing as the canon endgame.
It’s not racist or sexist against Kelly Marie Tran to say that Rose was poorly written and her actions were wrong. That is a criticism directed at Rian Johnson, not the actress.
