Netflix just dropped a surprisingly spoilery clip, revealing that Colleen Wing will be appearing, in some capacity, in Luke Cage Season 2! Given Danny’s presence in the show and Misty’s role in the next season of Iron Fist, I was hoping/assuming we’d get Colleen here, but it’s exciting to have it confirmed. There are a few details in the clip that have me extra excited.
One is purely aesthetic. Misty has tended to wear red in these shows, but here we have her in something that looks a bit more official. It’s not a costume– and Misty has never really worn costumes in the traditional sense– but it’s something I could imagine her wearing in a permanent capacity. More importantly, it matches Colleen’s “official” look in this universe, and of course…
…these fit their modern color schemes (back in the 70s, Misty wore black and Colleen wore red, but they got their styles revamped a decade-or-so ago).
The other significant detail that caught my eye was this moment:
Colleen doesn’t make a single move to help Misty until Misty starts holding her own. Whether or not they came to this bar looking for a fight (which, knowing these two, maybe they did…), this looks like an impromptu training session.
Misty: “Hey, Col, what’s the use– I’m right-handed, remember? I’ll never be any good as a leftie. Might as well give it up.”
Colleen: “If that’s what you want. Thought you had the guts, though.”
Deadly Hands of Kung Fu vol. 1 #33 by Chris Claremont and Marshall Rogers
In the comics, after she lost her arm, Misty fell into a deep depression, convinced that her life was over. Colleen stayed by her side as moral support, but was also more than willing to give her a necessary (and occasionally literal) kick in the pants to shake her out of her despair. MCU Colleen may be taking this same approach. She has clearly continued to extend Misty her friendship and support since their conversation at the end of The Defenders. But this fight indicates that there’s a tough love element to the relationship as well– that Colleen wants Misty to succeed under her own power, and to prove her own worth to herself. It’s an interesting element of their early relationship, and I love seeing it in play here.
And finally, of course… seeing them kicking butt together like this is a dream come true. We got a taste in The Defenders, but this is an entirely new level of team-up. June 22 can’t get here fast enough.
Hey Netflix, how about cancelling Iron Fist and give us Daughters of the Dragon instead?
