It was obvious with the PT and OT, but the ST is HARD because they’re ALL so important that it was DIFFICULT not to repeat white legacy characters already pictured five inches over instead of featuring the male heroes. The ONLY main characters out off all three sequels to be left off the poster are Finn and Poe. That’s not an assumption, that’s what’s on the poster.
We’re not misunderstanding that Finn, one of the protagonists (even in TLJ, he has his own arc, as cut to hell as it is) was left off the poster. That’s not a misunderstanding. It’s not “assuming the worst.” Saying “oh, but Finn wasn’t germaine (leave Jermaine out of this!) to the concept!” doesn’t make it all right. Shitty concept for a major Star Wars event, then.
But we’re expected to be like “OH, you were going for a special Skywalker concept! That’s why Finn and Poe aren’t there, of course! Apologies for misunderstanding! No, of course, it wasn’t racist at all!”
Intent doesn’t erase the fact that the poster is hurtful to a lot of Fans who are sick and tired of everyone acting like Finn, the first Black Star Wars lead, doesn’t exist.

Pretty sure anon meant that specific scene, and I’ve seen an ugly-ass edit that erased Finn out of the actual scene to replace him with Kylo too. This isn’t even a new thing with them, they’ve even cropped John out of his pictures with Daisy to replace him with Adam.

I’ve read the books. Most of the cast should have been brown; Vetch (who, in the books, was Sparrowhawk’s student mentor and close friend who happened to be a fat dude rather than being the pudgy comic relief) should have been black. In the sorry excuse for a miniseries? Everyone except Ogion (and there are probably nasty implications to the one black dude being cast as the Wise Mentor™ figure) is white. (Also of note: the cast being that white was against Le Guin’s wishes.)
The moral of this story, of course, is that white fans feel entitled to every role except a few stereotypical ones…but will jump to all sorts of bizarre conclusions in order to avoid examining or even admitting that. (To paraphrase another of Le Guin’s works: head on backwards.)

Ursula K. Le Guin (may she rest in peace) was so disgusted (link) by the whitewashing of Earthsea, among other issues, that she vowed never to allow any other screen adaptations of her work except with her active involvement. She knew that this meant, in practice, that she would never get another call from Hollywood (link). That’s how you know where the media industry’s priorities lie, that they would forego adapting the works of a beloved author rather than respect the diversity she represented in her works.
Personally I don’t apply the same standard of whitewashing to voice acting as I do to live-action acting, but diverse casting of voice talent is important and shows like, say, Steven Universe led the way here.
After being Separated for an entire film, dealing with Trumatic experiences, being betrayed, and starring death Itself in the face, Finn and Rey finally find each other again.

I hope Episode 9 opens with a low angle ass shot of Luke banging Mara Jade in a dirty Catina bathroom while Han and Leia film it and a child Benjamin Solo cheers for the couple to make him a niece and name her Rey.
I’m no editing master either but that edit gives me physical pain. You can actually see through a section of the cliff behind Kylo and he is poorly cropped, looking like he’s been summoned from another dimension and confused about it. He’s stationary and unemotive, as he tends to be in these edits where he replaces Finn because there’s no match between the emotion of the scene and whatever scene he was cut from. This is ugly, both in its intent and the execution.
Good to see common sense and decency is outpacing the erasure of a talented gay woman of color. You’d be wrong, however, if you thought there weren’t larries in the replies defending this bullshit.
