From the TLJ novelization, Rose’s PoV from the Supremacy:

I mean Rose hasn’t quite gotten Finn yet, but at least this passage shows her trying to understand him and acknowledging that she might not have been doing him justice–something the author himself repeatedly try to impress on a certain faction of fans, to no avail.

Even more, I wish the movie had made this view of Finn just a little clearer. Rose looking at Finn with a little apprehension, or making just an offhand comment about how he seems so sure of himself in these surroundings, would have done a lot to show that this was what Finn was on track to be, the future he had refused when he defected. It would certainly have helped put to rest the racist comments about him being a janitor and the denials that he was ever a cadet, much less a top-ranked one.

(1) As garbage as TLJ and its many book forms were, I believe more than ever that the end solidifies Finnrey happening. That Shakespeare version with Rey feeling jealously nailed it (along with John’s comments way back in december). I sometimes like to believe that as much as RJ ships r**lo and wants it to happen, knows that he couldn’t, especially since he doesn’t have control over IX. So he played with the dynamic as much as he could. But in the end even he admitted it was manipulation.

(2) Furthermore, everything we’ve heard from Pablo, EK and other
writers has been anti r**lo. And then it was confirmed over and over
again to be paralleled with Ezra and Maul’s relationship. Manipulation,
not romance. Finally, back to TLJ’s ending, I think it’s the trope where
Rey always felt affection towards Finn, and is finally realizing that
it’s so much more than that. Considering the VD confirmed that Finn’s
feelings were Rey was “something deeper.” Same goes for Rey.

(3) But yeah. There are little things I try to remind myself of
to keep balanced. Rey and Finn are reunited in IX. So far I’ve liked
what I’ve heard news/leaks-wise. JJ’s back. John seems excited. Nice new
look for Finn. Leia mentioning that everyone has the Force and the rock
scene on Crait fuel my belief in FS Finn. Can’t wait to see Daisy and
John back together for promo. Rey and Finn love each other. That’s the
summed up version lol.

Oh one last thing as far as the negative interracial romance
tropes go. JJ and Alan Dean Foster both confirmed that Rey was
definitely attracted to and falling for Finn. And was heartsick at his
departure. So at least we know that’s there. Her feeling jealously also
gives this more fuel for what it’s worth. Okay, now I’m done. I really
wanna see how this is gonna play out lol. Rey trying not to pry on
Finn’s business only to realize that he loves her too.

I certainly share your hopes! While the Shakespearean junior novelization Jedi the Last is said to be non-canon on Wookieepedia (it was still featured on the StarWars.com site), it certainly doesn’t go much further afield than TFA and its novelization. Finnrey is the only ship that has enough buildup to be canon, and if there is a romance at all it’s the only believable one.

Am I missing something? I don’t think Finn and Rey’s feelings for each other seem out of whack at all? In TFA there is very clear mutual attraction going on and it’s still there in TLJ despite Rian’s best efforts. That hug? How anyone can watch the way they hug each other at the end of TLJ and think they aren’t both into each other is beyond me. The idea that Finn is more into Rey than she is him is something the reyl0s push imho not something that is actually reflected on screen.

You’re right, of course–if Rey were not white I don’t think anyone would doubt that they are deeply in love. Like it or not, though, interracial couples are frequently dismissed in audience perceptions. It’s not even the GA as far as I can tell because it seems to be a widespread assumption that Finn and Rey are romantic and will be endgame if there’s any romance at all, but once you get into more dedicated SW fandom spaces the idea is regularly poo-pooed and Finn’s role frequently minimized.

I feel like reylos wouldn’t be so bad if they embraced Kylo Ren more than they did Ben Solo. What they write is white Finnrey, but what if they wrote fanfic AUs where Rey turns to the dark side and she’s pitted against the resistance? Sure, it’s ooc, but it would be more interesting than woobifying Kylo, making Finn & Poe look bad to make Kylo look better, having Rey “fix” him, or justifying his evil actions.

I mean there are some terrifying reylows who actually think the First Order is right or the Resistance are just as bad, and write that as a happy ending. The people who write Benny as a moodier white Finn are annoying, but the people who think torture and mass murder are normal and justifiable in war are just scary.

Luke wasn’t completely wrong to spare Kyle? What. Thanks to TLJ and Johnson, Luke Was A Dick is pretty much the only concrete reason offered by the ST movies as to why Kyle is the way that he is. There’s nothing else. Almost nobody reads the goddamn novels, Snoke abusing Kyle Ben is not a thing with general audience. Luke’s shouldering the whole blame (thank’s sfm, RJ).

It really should take only half a second of critical thinking to realize that Luke couldn’t have made Kylo evil–that Kylo was already consumed by it when Luke looked into his mind. Kylo then slaughtered Luke’s students and took his already-turned friends in what was clearly a premeditated attack. JJ had better make that clear in IX.

IDK if you’ve seen the Trekkie comedy film GALAXY QUEST (It’s about a group of washed-up Sci-fi actors who end up mistaken for real heroes by a race of aliens who need their help), but there’s a scene where the characters are at an abandoned mining facility on a desert planet and they have to steal a beryllium sphere from a colony of vicious child-like aliens without weapons. How would you imagine Finn, Rey, Poe, Rose, and Chewbacca would do if they were in a similar situation?

I love Galaxy Quest SO MUCH. I imagine Finn would make the plan and give the orders, Rey would serve as a distraction to draw the creepy kid-aliens away, Chewbacca and Rose would grab a sphere while Finn and Rey fend off the creepy aliens, and Poe would swoop in to fly them all out as soon as they have what they came for!

As far as Finn and Rey’s feelings for each other seeming out of whack, one thing I notice is that movies seem really bad at portraying mutual attraction specifically between white women and black men. It’s either stereotypical or something along the lines of Get Out. TV does it better. Kara and James Olsen, while short lived, was a good example, and now with Cloak and Dagger, Tandy Bowen is shown unashamedly attracted to Ty Johnson. Movies get this so bad for some reason.

That’s an interesting–and disheartening–dichotomy. In fact I can’t think of a lot of Black men/white women romances on the big screen in general. There was a discourse about John as a romantic lead a little while back and I’ve been thinking since then, do even undisputed superstars like Denzel Washington and Will Smith count as romantic leads? Will had Mr. Hitch and Denzel had… The Preacher’s Wife? They both have amazing filmographies and commercial success that few actors of any race could rival and yet I don’t think they could be called romantic leading men like Leonardo Dicaprio or Brad Pitt. It seems to be a combination of Hollywood’s distaste for both interracial romances and Black leading women.

There have been several films that Denzel should have had a romance with the co-lead, but because she was white they nixed it because test audiences didn’t like it.

Will, among many other black actors, has had the love interest changed from the original casting call (black) to someone more racially ambiguous to appeal to audiences (usually mixed with light skin or non-black Latina) by studios.

Hollywood is a mess and it’s still in so many ways operating on the 80s & 90s scale of what sales and what won’t, even though a lot of people want better. All I can say is I hope John is able to break that mold. Or at the very least put some more dents in it. He’s on the right track with starting his own production company to make an impact.

Never forget that Rey had been ready and willing to die with Finn on Starkiller base when she thought he was going to die. She didn’t run, she try to find help, she didn’t do anything but lay down next to the boy she adored and wait for the end. At least they would be together in the end.

Finn:*is unconscious*

Kylo: come with me if you want to live

Rey:*looks back at unconscious Finn* guess I’ll die uwu
