Finn, Ron Weasley and Raoul de Chagny are starting a “people ship the girl who’s mutually in love with me with the villain who abuses her instead” club, refer members in the comments

How “The Last Jedi Defies Expectations” video is bad, it was basically “Poe and Finn needed women to put them in their place” acting as if Finn and Poe are played by white men
I have repeatedly stated that the “perfect and all-knowing woman exists to teach wayward man” is actually a very regressive and sexist trope, and it intersects with racism when the men in question are MOCs.
Do you think reylo might happen because of it’s general popularity? A lot of Critics & journalists after episode 8 have written about how they loved it. Either reylo is the most popular Star Wars ship on Tumblr or there’s just a lot of the same people posting their thoughts on the ship on different accounts. I don’t like it, but do you do you think this vocal (& incredibly ANNOYING) part of the fandom could influence what happens in 9? Would Abrams think that it’s “what the fans want”?
If having loud and vocal fans made a ship canon Sherlock would have ended with a Joh/nlock wedding, Harry would have married Hermione, and Avatar: The Legend of Korra would have featured the grandchildren of Zuko and Katara. And these were all ships that, unlike reylow, actually made a modicum of sense and would not have caused a shitstorm of controversy (other than homophobes with JL).
Don’t confuse passion and dedication for popularity with the general audience, either. The fans of these doomed ships are so dedicated and annoying in large part because their ships are unlikely to be canon, and they engage in all kinds of nonsense theories and symbolism and parallels because they can’t make a case in the actual story. @tarisilmarwen has discussed how the Zuttaran and Reylow fandoms behave in very similar ways, from pretentious reaching to hijacking threads (link). Harry/Hermione shippers, or Harmonians, also belived in “the complex system of symbolism, allusion, and fiendishly clever misdirection they thought Rowling had included in the books“ (link). TJLC had this in spades, too (link).
By contrast people aren’t generally so zealous with ships that the story actually has a good foundation for, because what’s the point? I mean I do cinematic parallels with Finnrey because I’m sick of the fandom dismissing them as having no romantic chemistry when in every other context these same interactions and tropes are recognized as romantic as hell, but that’s because fandom is racist and I’m an angry nerd.
If you want to see what things are like outside the narrow SW fandom echo chamber, see a post and poll on the entertainment gossip blog Oh No They Didn’t! about the merits/demerits of reylow (link) where 78% were against the thought and 8% didn’t care, leaving reylows at a tiny minority of 14%. ONTD is hardly SJW central, yet the poll and the comments were overwhelmingly against the idea. People by and large think the endgame would be Finnrey or no romance.
Tl; dr: Reylow shippers are vocal annoying, but outside of dedicated fandom spaces they’re not nearly the force they’d like to think they are. A lot of the GA respond to the idea with visceral disgust, including authors who write for SW as we saw recently with E.K. Johnston. JJ would be a fool to compromise his story and characters to please such a small, if loud, section of the fandom.
The Barbie gifs you used are from the youtube stopmotion show Most Popular Girls in School (MPGIS on tumblr and on youtube) if you want to credit them in your tags.
Thank you, I put it in the tags! Stop-motion animation takes a shit load of work, they deserve all the credit.
CinemaWins just took a crack at the Canto Bight scene in his Infinity War review. Is it too much to hope he’s changed his mind and he’s actually realizing how bad TLJ is? (Although the more likely explanation is everyone including him hates Canto Bight and he knows it.)
Update: CW just made a Space Leia joke. This review is awesome, I
REALLY want his EGA TLJ video to be full of sarcasm a la his Special
Edition wins.
“I tell ya, it’s a good thing this side quest didn’t have a casino.”
“Yeah, unless [spaced guy’s] last name is Skywalker.” (Though to be fair, Leia’s is Organa)
That anon about Boba activated my fight or flight. And now I’m developing another oc for him to be friends with because apparently no one else is gonna let him be happy and heal.
Poor guy can’t catch a break ;_;
In my Boba story, Boba is best friends with an adult clone on Kamino. Geonosis happens and they run into each other. Boba tells him to kill the Jedi… but the clone runs right to Mace Windu’s side and starts taking orders instead. They run into each other multiple times throughout my story after that. In my story clones can die multiple times and Boba has killed him at least once so far in revenge.
Is this the Boba story that’s being turned into a medieval fantasy? Are the clones like homunculi then? Also I hope Mace survives!
This Reylo said “JJ better not give me a cynical, realistic Reylo. JJ better give me the mushiest, most self-indulgent romance Star Wars has ever seen” and I was like schutta you want Finnrey just admit you wish Finn were a white villain and go
They’re so transparent.
Er … these people do know that there was a good chance of Luke and Leia ending up together until Lucas decided he was done and he was going to tie up loose ends in TLJ? Also … it fucking states that Stormtroopers are male and female. What they don’t appear to be are non human.
In retrospect it was a mercy Lucas sucks at romantic chemistry and there isn’t much to point at between Luke and Leia beyond a couple of lukewarm (ahem) kisses.
Yeah, we clearly hear at least one female Stormtrooper in TFA. Also it’s pretty heterosexist I think to assume Finn wouldn’t know about dating and romance if he’d been separated from the female Stormtroopers at a young age? Don’t do my bicon like that.
Is there an anon going around trying to get Finn fans to resent Poe? Because that thing about the toys is absolutely not true.
I don’t think pointing out the ways that Poe might be prioritized over Finn is the same as getting Finn fans to resent Poe. Like, I’m well aware that lots of fans dismiss Finn and lift up Poe for Reasons but that doesn’t mean I resent Poe, I’m just aware of the reality of antiblack racism.
Merch claims are hard to evaluate because the situation differs from outlet to outlet, by sales, season etc., but even if the anon was wrong it’s plausibly out of genuine fear for Finn’s position in the franchise rather than purposefully sowing dissension.
